The Physical Therapy Department under the College of Allied Health and Sciences participated in a two-day International Certificate Course in Advanced Sports Trauma Management at the University Oval and Worship Center on August 29-30, 2024. The said event was joined by 16 participants including physiotherapists from Ilocos Norte, professionals from local rehabilitation clinics, medical personnel and instructors from the university.

The course aimed to equip the participants with advanced skills necessary for responding to sport-related injuries, especially during events held at the university.

Dr. Subhasis Karmaker, a renowned senior physiotherapist specializing in musculoskeletal (MSK) and sports injuries, led the course. Dr. Karmaker served with the UAE (United Arab Emirates) National Rugby Team and was recognized as the Best Physiotherapist of the Year in 2023 in UAE. He also holds licenses to practice in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, UAE, and India.

During the first day of the event, they indulged themselves in lectures and theoretical discussions, while on the second day, they featured field demonstrations in the university oval where the participants applied their newly acquired knowledge and skills in practical real-world scenarios.

โ€œIn sports fields, physiotherapists play a critical role, often making decisions that directly impact players' lives. This training provides a benchmark for attendees, equipping them with advanced life-saving techniques that are crucial on the field,โ€ Dr. Karmaker said.

โ€œThe advanced sports trauma course encompasses a lot of physiotherapy techniques alongside life-saving skills,โ€ he added.

The training focused on various critical areas of sports trauma management, including Basic Life Support (BLS), BLS with defibrillation, airway management and ventilation, breathing and chest trauma, circulation and shock, head injuries and concussions, facial injuries specific to sports, spinal injuries, musculoskeletal trauma, and wound care.

Moreover, Dr. Karmaker further elaborated on the importance of this training stating that the course sets a great benchmark, equipping attendees with advanced life-saving techniques on the field. It helps to identify potential risks that, if not addressed promptly, can lead to severe consequences. The training will not only open doors to new learning for the attendees but also enable them to better support players in the region, potentially saving lives.

Prof. Judith Rivera, PTRP, a representative from the Department of Physical Therapy, noted that the training allows the staff to be equipped with the necessary skills to respond to any sports-related injuries. According to her, โ€œThis is to strengthen our sports rehab, particularly in PT (physical therapy). Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re coming up with these training to equip our staffs for these kind of skills. The goal of this training is for us to be prepared to respond to sports traumatic injuries, especially during school events.โ€

On the other hand, Ms. Marietta Tumaneng, PTRP, clinical supervisor of Laoag Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy Center, knew Dr. Karmaker as the resource speaker of a notable institution she is affiliated with. She also emphasized the importance of this initiative. โ€œThe role of a physiotherapist in sports is very limited. So I wanted to give a venue for the other professionals, especially the physios, in preparation for their potential participation in the Palarong Pambansa. we want the government to recognize the diversified role of PT, one of which is sports trauma management,โ€ she explained.

Additionally, Ms. Tumaneng highlighted their strong partnership with Northwestern University, noting that the physical therapy students frequently intern in their facility. She described the NWU Physical Therapy department as being like family, with collaborations spanning both academic and social projects.

In an interview, Dr. Karmaker emphasized the importance of mastering the skills taught in the course, stating, โ€œIn sports trauma, nothing can be taken for granted. On the field, you are there to save a person or delay the inevitable. The impact is immediate, so you have to trust your abilities and act on it, and the particular physiotherapist on the field is directly responsible for the patientโ€™s life.โ€

The recent controversy over Vice President Sara Duterte's book for children, titled "Isang Kaibigan", has sparked various inquiries regarding the relationship between politics and literature. The heartwarming friendship story has become a national controversy over plagiarism accusations and possible hidden political agendas.

In the recent hearing regarding this controversy, there was a focus on concerns raised by critics, especially Senator Risa Hontiveros, regarding the substantial financial allocation of over 10 million pesos for the book. Senator Hontiveros inquired about the justification for such a significant expense, suggesting that it should undergo scrutiny to ensure it aligns with the project's originality and impact. The examination was prompted by the book's resemblance to existing childrenโ€™s literature, such as Owly: Just a Little Blue by Andy Runton, which some argue undermines its originality.

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) defended the book, stating that it underwent a comprehensive review and adhered to ethical standards. They emphasized that the book reflects genuine effort and proper citations. Vice President Duterte further endorsed the proposal by stating that the funds were used only for publishing expenses and that the book was not intended for sale. Nonetheless, the lack of detailed financial breakdowns and transparency has raised concerns about potential mismanagement of public funds. The hearing underscored these concerns, with Senator Hontiveros emphasizing the need for a clear and detailed financial report to justify using such substantial funds.

Some voices at the hearing suggested that the significant allocation might be used to enhance Vice President Duterte's public image or to advance personal and political interests. This raised questions about whether the funds were invested for the genuine benefit of public literature or to serve as a tool for personal or political gain.

Why allocate over 10 million pesos of confidential funds to a book that critics argue bears a striking resemblance to existing childrenโ€™s literature; the similarities in the plotโ€”friends aiding a bird family to rebuildโ€”raise important concerns about the bookโ€™s originality and the justification for such a significant financial investment. What does this mean or affect childrenโ€™s literature? Investing public funds in projects that may lack substantial novelty could undermine the quality and creativity of literature meant for young readers. Are we potentially depriving other deserving literary initiatives of vital support?

Children's books carry a lot of power. They do more than merely narrate stories; they also create values, alter viewpoints, and, in certain situations, gently direct intellect. These books can have a significant influence when they are written by well-known authors. "Isang Kaibigan" raises issues not only with who wrote it but also with why and what it stands for.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with prominent people writing for literary works. But we have to be wary of the motivations underlying these kinds of contributions. The purpose of literature, especially for children readers, should be clear and unadulterated: it should inspire and instruct rather than control or deceive. Any attempt to hide real intentions behind the narrative mask of children's books must be repudiated.

This situation calls for a rigorous examination of how public money is spent. Hence, transparency and accountability are essential to ensure that people's funds are used effectively and that public figures uphold the highest standards of originality and ethical integrity.

Many Filipinos are striving every single day to build a better future, working tirelessly and surviving in the face of adversity. Dreaming and hoping that somehow the government will recognize and value their sacrifices and invest wisely in projects that will truly aid, support, and uplift their aspirations in life. Especially, the future of youth in our country. Therefore, our decisions on resource allocation and accountability will not only shape the legacy we leave and the promise to hardworking Filipinos but also determine the future of our youth.

Alice Guo's recent departure from the Philippines, while an ongoing investigation into her involvement with the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), brought attention to alarming gaps in immigration management and legal responsibility. Her ability to leave the country despite major allegations and an ongoing investigation raises concerns about due process, as well as the possibility of powerful persons manipulating the system from behind the scenes. Everyone was shocked when Senator Hontiveros disclosed that Alice Guo, the person behind the โ€œDi ko na po maalala, your honorโ€ controversy, also identified to be Guo Hua Ping, had already departed the country on July 18 despite being tracked by several government agencies, yet she managed to travel overseas. Despite numerous steps and procedures taken against Guo, no agency was able to apprehend or stop her exit.

Guo served as Mayor of Bamban, Tarlac for almost how many years before she was dismissed from office in 2024 by the Philippine Ombudsman because of issues on her questionable properties and her major involvement in the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) operations. Her escape captured public attention due to legal, political, and international implications which then questioned the existing power of the government to hold people under investigation. Up to this time, it is still questionable her ability to leave the country despite major allegations and an ongoing investigation raises concerns about due process, as well as the possibility of powerful persons manipulating the system from behind the scenes.

How come Guo approached Indonesia on July 18 despite her ongoing controversies? Why did this happen? This part remains unclear. As the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) sent out initial information to the media Monday evening that Guoโ€™s route on July 18 was from Denpasar, Indonesia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia via Batik Air 177, they were still verifying if Guo arrived in Denpasar before Kuala Lumpur. If Guo took a Batik Air flight from the Philippines to Kuala Lumpur, it indicates that she took off from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the departure airport for Batik Air which remained legally and politically questionable.

As stated by the Bureau of Immigration (BI), there was no identified record of Guo's departure from the Philippines on their centralized database. Yet the BI has records of Guo's admission into the three ASEAN countries specified by the PAOCC: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 18, a flight to Singapore on July 21, and a ferry boat to Batam, Indonesia, on August 18. There is a possibility that Guo left the Philippines by sea or via private plane, BI spokesperson Sandoval said when asked by Rappler.

Following the announcement of President Ferdinand โ€œBong Bongโ€ Marcos Jr. the total ban on POGOs, Remulla reminded BI personnel not to engage in corrupt activities. At the same time, the government processes foreigners' exit from the Philippines. Earlier on Tuesday, Remulla issued a final warning to any Bureau of Immigration (BI) personnel who may have been involved in Guo's escape, despite the strict restrictions imposed by the government. He then added that either these suspected people come out and unveil the truth or wait until he gets to the bottom of this where heads will roll and all hell will break loose.

Legally and politically speaking, Guoโ€™s ability to leave the country without being apprehended suggests a significant breakdown in the immigration system or, more concerningly, the presence of powerful individuals wielding influence to facilitate her departure. This idea then raises the question of who benefits from these disparities. Would it then be possible that some specific persons or groups inside the immigration system or political sector were complicit in Guo's exit? The presence of such persons would negatively impact not only the legal system but also the public's trust in the government's ability to enforce its laws fairly. For what happened, itโ€™s as if we let ourselves be smacked by this foreigner who continually mocked our laws, norms, and procedures. The public needs assurance that such injustices will be rectified and that justice will be served without constraint.

Contradicting the statement Guo in her letter to the Senate President, she asked for assistance regarding the allegations being thrown at her but later proven through a thorough investigation initiated by Senator Risa Hontiveros. Alice Guo also said that sheโ€™s willing to face the charge against her by the Ombudsman, DOJ, and BIR and to prove her innocence. As they entertain her excuses, the law enforces were left nothing but shocking news about her departure. Itโ€™s ironic to think that lawmakers who are on the hunt for Alice Guo were not able to notice and locate her whereabouts. Itโ€™s highly probable that the culprit itself has the power to manipulate the people in the government. Guo would not be able to leave the country if the people or should we say the officials of the government especially in the immigration did their job or just by having a mere awareness about the case of the fugitive Alice Guo.

As this ball rolls, a thorough investigation is necessary. Blaming would not solve big issues like this. Instead of pointing fingers at people who would always deny having a connection with the suspicious operations, it is then a wise step to look beyond the obvious procedural flaws and investigate whether there was any undue influence or corruption in allowing Guo to leave. Above all, transparency and accountability are then important for ensuring that such catastrophes never happen again and that the rule of law continues to prevail.

Imagine the exhaustion from working 8-10 hours a day, sometimes even more, just to earn enough and make ends meet. Due to the dramatic rise of inflation, the prices of basic goods continue to go up and food that is essential for our survival becomes harder and harder to afford. Seeing the news that the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), the socioeconomic planning body of the government concludes that an individual with 64 pesos per day is not considered as โ€œfood poorโ€ would most likely become unrealistic?

Naturally, such unrealistic statistics stirred commotion among the Filipino masses. This perspective is only through the lens of Filipino workers who live from paycheck to paycheck, what more if they take into account the circumstance of the marginalized with no stable source of income? This whole โ€œ64 pesos for food per dayโ€ mishap is like putting a cheap price tag on the everyday struggles of indigent and even ordinary Filipinos.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), claims to be โ€œthe premier socioeconomic planning body of the government of the Philippinesโ€ as stated on their official website. Itโ€™s ironic to think that a highly acknowledged authoritative agency on macroeconomic forecasts, policy analysis, and research, insists that an individual is no longer regarded as โ€œfood poorโ€ if their daily meal expenses exceed 64 pesos. A claim that is outdated, absurd, and simply out of touch with the harsh reality of an ordinary Filipino citizen.

According to Dr. Arsenio Balisacan, NEDA chief, the peso amount has been adjusted for inflation to ensure that they are properly tracking the changes. So that whether their policies and programs are executed just to diminish poverty slowly, would be understood by the people. This gave the senators a way to urge the agency to revisit their threshold, ensuring the accuracy of the poverty forecast. Groups reacted to the statement of NEDA which led them to question where on earth they came with those data. For them, said amount is not enough to feed every member of the family with nutritious food. As per Beatrice Marie Jacinto, Nutrition Officer II of the National Nutrition Council, having 64 pesos per day for every person in the family will only get energy sufficient diet and wonโ€™t be as nutritious as they expect.

Moreover, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) admits that the amount would be insufficient for some Filipinos but still insists the data are accurate. They also presented their food menu which includes scrambled egg, coffee with milk, boiled rice/ rice-corn milk for breakfast, boiled monggo with malunggay and dried dilis, banana and boiled rice-corn mix for lunch, and fried fish/ boiled pork, vegetable dish and boiled rice/ rice-corn mix for dinner boasting the number of food poor from 6.49 million in 2021 to 4.84 million in 2023

The Philippines is a third-world nation that has long struggled with issues including food insecurity, hunger, poverty, and malnutrition. If organizations like NEDA, which greatly influence government policies, are unaware of the challenges faced by the average Filipino citizen and the soaring costs of commodities, how can the country resolve these problems? It is extremely alarming to think that these cabinet-level officials are given the means and resources to conduct research on the current economic state of our country and yet, the data that they come up with is far beyond accurate.

They should do better in gathering accurate and grounded data because thatโ€™s what they base their allocation of the countryโ€™s funds on. Low-balling the current prices of goods is a blatant display of deception, trickery, and disrespect towards ordinary Filipino citizens.Vast majority of Filipino workers rely on manual labor and other physically demanding jobs to make a living. Even if there are meals that cost 21 pesos each, which in todayโ€™s economy, is most probably non-existent, these meals would be insufficient to meet an ordinary workerโ€™s nutritional needs to keep the strength required for labor. Not to mention the growing problem of malnutrition and other health issues related to poor food choices or lack thereof. Malnutrition is still a major problem in the Philippines as of 2024, especially for young people. Approximately 2 million Filipino children under the age of five suffer from extreme food poverty, according to UNICEF.

Their proposed menu of instant noodles and coffee during the budget hearing is simply inadequate in offering the balanced and nutritious diet necessary to support an individualโ€™s overall health and well-being. The mere fact that they are even suggesting this kind of diet is comparable to them telling the general public to settle for unhealthy food choices just so they can survive for another day.

The inability to adapt to shifting economic conditions highlights the need for more updated and considerate approaches to policy making. Accurate data and useful analyses are crucial for developing creative and effective solutions to the present issues with hunger and economic stability. Therefore, in order to have relevant measures that work, the authorities must critically assess their overall strategy while recognizing the actual concerns that plague the nation. Filipinos, who rely on NEDAโ€™s recommendations deserve better than to be spoon-fed outdated statistics that are confusing, misleading, and malicious.

May this recent controversy serve as an eye-opener concerning the process of situational analysis and policy-making in our country. We must hold those in power accountable for their actions and inaction. This issue could perhaps open an avenue for discussion wherein there is encouragement for the public to raise their voices, express their opinions, and make positive sociopolitical change.

Northwestern University warmly welcomed the incoming students for the Academic Year 2024-2025 with Freshmenia Plus 2024 at the university oval on August 14, 2024. This significant occasion marked the commencement of a rewarding journey for the freshmen, heralding the beginning of their academic pursuits at the university.

Spearheaded by the Supreme Student Council, the said event began with a campus tour, attended by the freshmen from the different colleges within the university. Moreover, the event featured a performance by the Saguday Tambureros, followed by series of interactive games designed to engage the new students. The event also showcased musical performances by the After 4 and After 5 bands.

Prof. Agustina Dancel Matias, Office of the Student Affairs Dean, opened the event with a warm and enthusiastic speech saying, โ€œMalugod naming kayong tinatanggap, mga freshman students, na ngayon ay pinili na kanilang ipagpatuloy ang kanilang edukasyon at patuloy nilang buoin ang kanilang kinabukasan dito sa Northwestern University.โ€

She also took a moment to welcome second-year students who had missed out on the Freshmenia event last year, expressing gratitude for their continued support. โ€œSalamat, dahil patuloy parin ang pagtangkilik niyo sa Northwestern University. Isa sa pinakamalakas, at pinakamalaki na private higher institution,โ€ she said. Prof. Matias reaffirmed the universityโ€™s commitment to supporting students on their academic journey.

Furthermore, Stephanie Jane B. Bonilla, the President-Elect of the Supreme Student Council (SSC) encouraged her fellow students to make the most of the year ahead โ€œI hope and I pray that throughout this academic year, may we have a fruitful and productive time. Northwesternians, let us be more and do more. Let us be proud and be loud. Because at the end of the day, we are not just you, we are NWU,โ€ she concluded.

Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas, University President, on the other hand, highlighted the academic yearโ€™s theme, โ€œVisions of Victory,โ€ and assured the students of the universityโ€™s unwavering support in helping them achieve their goals.

The Freshmenia Plus concluded with a captivating performance by the Saguday Chorale, capping off the highly anticipated Hydro Party Finale, leaving students energized and eager for the year ahead.
