The Cebuano Pirates Jump Ship

The Cebuano pirates jump ship - kind of. Zeal Esports recently acquired the roster of 6045 Pirates and their respective coach for an undisclosed amount of around Php 100,000 - 150,000.

With their outstanding performances in the professional Valorant scene, even representing the Philippines in the Valorant Champions Tour 2021: Southeast Asia Stage 2 Challengers together with Bren Esports, it is surprising for everyone to find the team leaving the organization despite having newly signed contracts with 6045 Pirates prior to VCT.

After weeks of negotiations, South.gg, TLB Ventures, and an anonymous financier teamed up to create a new esports org named Zeal Esports in which former 6045 Pirates head coach Yuki “Zyki” Uruma joined. With the team retaining its original 6045 Pirates roster, Dominique “N1CO” Tul-id, Carl “senyorcarl” Carandang, Keith “FireSaiyajin” Madarang, James “2geMONSTAH” Goopio, Vince “Flash” Medado is joined by Craig Zachary “CraigyS” Salgado to form the newly acquired team.

This transfer move was a “make or break” scenario since if the team failed to find another org to buy the roster out, the team itself was bound to tear apart as their future was uncertain without the resources needed to keep competing.

Contracts locked in for half a year is quite a waste of time as a player, especially with Masters 3 on the horizon, which is one of the last events where teams can have the chance to qualify for the most prestigious Valorant event to date, the Valorant Champions, happening later this year.

With this recent change of management, the team roster is guaranteed a bootcamp that is sponsored by the people at Zeal Esports themselves — which was in stark contrast to their previous set-up wherein most of the players primarily competed during VCT in the comforts of TNC Cebu HQ due to intermittent disconnections affecting their former Pirates bootcamp caused by a local internet service provider’s drilling operations.

This crucial move will allow Cebu to remain as a competitive region in the country, after historically losing to many organizations that once ruled the local scene in their respective esport titles.

Zyki has stated that he would finally be able to focus on coaching the team. “Passion, hardwork and dedication pays off.”, as he said in an interview, referencing the time and effort they spent to get to where they are today.

As for the 6045 Pirates, they are now looking to rebuild with their former in-game leader Albert Jahnn “Aze” Baguio rumored to be scouting for upcoming players and resurface with a new squad later this year.

Apex Legends Coming Soon To Mobile

The tactical FPS battle royale Apex Legends has now landed on mobile consoles in closed beta. Though the game is in its early testing phase, select players from the Philippines and India can participate in the beta as testers at present time.

According to Electronic Arts Inc. (EA), Apex Legends Mobile is planned to be very much what can be said a distilled version of the main game - this means that the experience from the PC is still very much present in the mobile console.

For those unfamiliar with the gameplay, the game is very much a battle royale in its premise; wherein groups of three launch themselves to the map wherein they must traverse the landscape looting weapons and items. All while fighting their way through other teams as the map forcibly closes to one location point as the game progresses in which the last two teams duke it out for the title of champion.

Of course, among the many characteristics that set apart Apex Legends from other battle royale titles are the characters. A roster of heroes called "Legends" from the main game is set to be featured each with their unique skills and gameplay which promised to fare well in the transition from PC to mobile. Along with the characters, the weaponry, and items are also announced to be ported to the mobile version.

While the developers promise that Apex Legends Mobile will not be so different from the PC version, one of the major changes that are to be expected from the mobile version is the change from a first-person perspective to a third person. This is intended to ease piloting characters with touch controls. This change is also very similar to other popular PC-ported mobile FPS like PUBG.

Unfortunately, it seems that the news of the official release is still far from the horizon. The direction of the mobile game as of right now remains focused on testing and development despite the latest announcement from EA.

Sentinels Suspends Sinatraa Amidst Sexual Harassment Allegations

Sentinels suspended Valorant and former Overwatch pro player Jay ‘Sinatraa’ Won last Wednesday, March 10, 2021, amidst sexual allegations made against him by his ex-girlfriend Cleo ‘cle0h’ Hernandez.

The American esports organization announced in their Twitter account about Sinatraa’s suspension and has launched their own internal investigation. This meant that Sinatraa would miss out on playing in the Valorant Masters Stage 1.

In a 9-page Google Docs document link posted on her personal Twitter account — with screenshots, audio links, and all, Cleo revealed Sinatraa’s manipulative, toxic behavior and as well as how he coerced her multiple times into having sexual in*******se.

Sinatraa has responded to the sexual allegation by posting a TwitLonger stating that "she recalls our relationship differently than I do." He apologized for how their relationship ended but asserted that he never sexually assaulted her in any way. Sinatraa also confirmed that he is fully cooperating with the investigations.

Sentinels have since replaced Sinatraa with Canadian and Former Cloud9 Valorant star Tyson "TenZ" Ngo for their missing spot on their roster.

Riot Games has also officially suspended Sinatraa for playing at their Valorant events whilst Sentinels are conducting their investigation. Sinatraa's former Overwatch team, San Francisco Shock, also released a statement saying they have zero tolerance for situations like this while the Overwatch League announced that they will be changing Sinatraa’s MVP Zarya skin and will offer refunds to the players affected by the changes.

TNC Says Goodbye To Kpii And Febby; Room For An All-Filipino Roster?

TNC Predator parts ways with both of their non-Filipino players, offlaner Damien “Kpii” Chok and coach-turned-team captain Kim Yong "Febby" Min, as announced on March 3, 2021 on their official page possibly hinting at an upcoming all-Filipino lineup.

TNC stated in their post, "For our next step, the team decided to move towards greater heights and agreed to part ways." This was after the team was unable to qualify for the upcoming ONE Esports Singapore Major scheduled at the end of March.

In their post, TNC thanked the two players for their "displayed great potential" and a "plethora of different strategies" that overall made the team excel in their own right, even stating, "Our roster with them is the best so far". The organization gave its best for the two players hoping that their paths would cross again in the future.

Despite being dubbed as one of the tournament favorites, the team failed in grabbing a ticket to Singapore, only placing fourth in the first season of the 2021 Dota Pro Circuit's (DPC) Southeast Asian regional league whose top 3 were to represent the region (SEA) in the Singapore Major. This ultimately led to the departure of the two Korean players.

With only their talented trio of Kim "Gabbi" Villafuerte, Armel Paul "Armel" Tabios, and Timothy "Tims" Randrup left, TNC may be looking at fielding an all-Filipino roster to fill in the shoes of both Kpii and Febby. The team is expected to return in the second season of the Dota Pro Circuit around the middle of April with an updated roster.

Genshin Players Advised To Hide UIDs

Players of the popular gacha game Genshin Impact are warned of a potential scam that involves their personal UID which can lead to an account-locking.

The scam works by first attaining a player’s UID, gifting them Primogems through a third-party service, the receiver spending those said Primogems, the sender performing a chargeback or refund, and the receiver ending with a negative balance which can lead to an account-locking by miHoYo.

This security issue is caused by a miHoYo-partnered service that allows anyone to top-up Primogems to any UID without the original user’s consent.

Players are now advised to refrain from posting or sharing their respective UIDs until miHoYo resolves this issue and implements effective security checks against this fraud.

Mineski-PPGL To Host Upcoming Nationwide Wild Rift Tournament

Announced from the official website of League of Legends: Wid Rift, it was revealed that Mineski and PPGL were to host a League of Legends: Wild Rift nationwide tournament with a grand prize pool of Php 10,000,000.

The tournament is divided into the Summer and Fall splits — the summer split to be held from April to June while the fall split is from July to September. The open qualifiers are separated by region — North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Winners from the qualifiers will then proceed to the group stages wherein a point system will be used. Every split puts five million points at stake, which are convertible to cash at the end of the split with a rate of 1 point is equal to Php 1.00. A team’s amassed points will also determine if they will proceed to the playoffs or not.

Mark Navarro, the general manager of Mineski, has said that the point system is their way of hastening the growth of the League of Legends: Wild Rift professional scene in the country.

Mineski-PPGL will judge teams by “pure skill” and, as such, Navarro has also said that there are no teams invited to participate in the tournament in order to ensure only the best teams will emerge from the massive open qualifiers. However, the League of Legends: Wild Rift SEA Icon Series: Preseason tournament will feature Bren Esports, RRQ PH, and Team Secret.

Riot CEO Under Fire Over Sexism, Labor Allegations

Riot Games’ CEO Nicolo Laurent is under investigation for claims of gender discrimination and sexual harassment, on top of alleged labor violations, according to a legal complaint filed against the company by a former employee.

The complaint, filed by former executive assistant Sharon O’Donnell in January 2021, recalls the discriminatory experiences she and her fellow female employees had under Laurent.

This includes disturbing allegations of the executive making sexual advances, sweetened with the offer to travel outside of work, and retaliating through administrative means when said advances are rejected. The complaint also recalls Laurent telling female employees to “have kids” as a means of coping with the stress of the pandemic.

Here come the labor violations.

O’Donnell’s stay at the company ended in July 2020, and she believes that her termination was because she approached Riot’s human resources department about Laurent’s behavior. That’s barely the start of Riot’s problems.

In her complaint, O’Donnell states that she was treated as a non-exempt employee in the company, a designation that disallowed her from receiving the benefits covered by the wage and hour laws of the California Labor Code and the applicable Wage Orders.

Despite that, O’Donnell also complains of working 10-hour days five days a week, having to work on weekends, and still regularly going overtime without equivalent pay.

This is not the first or only case of workplace harassment Riot Games faces. As of the moment, the video game company also faces multiple legal charges from several other past employees.

Most notable of these cases is the ongoing Melanie McCracken et. al vs. Riot Games, on which the Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) and the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE) in a February 3 joint statement claimed Riot “violated the law in multiple ways” in regard to its treatment of women in the workplace.

Riot spokesperson Joe Hixson has responded to the allegations posed against the company, stating: "Core to giving Rioters confidence in our commitment to culture transformation is taking all allegations of harassment or discrimination very seriously, thoroughly investigating claims, and taking action against anyone who is found to have violated our policies,” followed by the promise of the full cooperation of its CEO in the ensuing investigation.

Pokémon GO’s annual Lunar New Year event returns as we celebrate the Year of the Ox with an exclusive timed-research featuring the wild bull Pokémon Tauros, the premiere introduction of Mega Gyarados, and an increase of red Pokémon spawning in the wild.

From Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, February 14, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. local time, Red Pokémon — like Krabby, Goldeen, Magmar, Magikarp, Miltank, Meditite, Tepig, and more — will spawn more frequently in the wild. Pokémon representing animals associated with the Lunar New Year will be hatching from 5 km eggs.

From Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. to Saturday, February 20, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. local time, Mega Gyarados, along with Mega Pidgeot and Mega Ampharos, will be appearing in Mega Raids while Meditite, Carvanha, Duskull, Skorupi, and Darumaka will be appearing in one-star raids, Miltank, Octillery, Blaziken, Camerupt, and Absol will be appearing in three-star raids, and Latios and Latias will be appearing in five-star raids.

Tauros, the Wild Bull Pokémon, will be featured in a timed-research and event-exclusive field research tasks will reward encounters with Meowth, Alolan Meowth, Galarian Meowth, Meditite, and Miltank.

The trading range will also be increased temporarily to 40 km from Monday, February 8, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. to Monday, February 15, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. PST(GMT −8). There is also an increased chance of becoming Lucky Friends and trading Lucky Pokémon.

Former 6045 Pirates Valorant 7th Man Gets Banned Mid-Stream

Valorant pro player Aleister Busico, designated in-game as "Kara", was reportedly banned for cheating while in game in a stream last night.

He was reportedly banned during a ranked match within MOTV's Bok stream. The match was abruptly interrupted due to Riot Vanguard, Riot's licensed anti-cheating system, explicitly banning Kara midstream.

Kara issued an apology the following day as well as an explanation trying to shed light on the situation and for his actions. He clarified on Riot's decision in the ban of his main account attributed to its affiliation to a smurf account that was under investigation.

"I tried to appeal to Riot about what happened and they sent me a statement regarding its connections to a recently flagged account."

6045.Pirates has since released Kara from their roster through an official statement from their page stating the organization does not tolerate any form of cheating nor third-party software.

Online manager for the team Yuki Uruma came out with this statement in our private interview:

"We are shocked about the news that he was permanently banned, We are releasing him from our roster since we do not tolerate any form of cheating or third-party software."

Aleister “Kara” Busico served as the 7th man for the uprising Cebu star esports team, 6045 Pirates. Due to the COVID 19 restrictions, he was unable to participate in his team's bootcamp as he is not native to Cebu. Manager Uruki stated that they have no way of supervising him thus the issue came as a surprise for them and thus the organization had to let him go.

Genshin Impact patch 1.3 brings us 2 exciting new character event wish banners with rate-ups for 5-star characters new and, for the first time, old: Sasuke 2.0 and electro waifu.

The long-awaited Anemo husbando Xiao (whose ascension materials, leaks show, will likely not be hurricane seeds) drops tomorrow, February 3, 2021. With him on the same banner are Xinyan, Beidou, and Diona.

Xiao's banner ends on February 17, when Keqing, who was previously only available on the standard banner, gets her own event banner. She will be accompanied by Geo Archon Ningguang, Bennett, and SS-Tier Main DPS Barbara.

The weapon banner, running from the start of patch 1.3 to February 23, 2021 will be featuring rate-ups for 5-star weapons Xiao's portrait weapon Primordial Jade Winged-Spear (Polearm) and Primordial Jade Cutter (Sword). Denim-centered clothing label Levi's teased Pokémon fans everywhere with an upcoming collaboration via a sneak-peek of a denim jacket through their social media accounts last January 28, 2021.

With a caption saying ‘COMING SOON’, the denim jacket features in its design a garden-themed print and pokémons Psyduck, Eevee, Squirtle, Odish, Meowth, Slowpoke, Bulbasaur, Ekans, Charmander, Diglett, Togepi, Vaporeon, Flareon, and Mewtwo.

Valve Delivers: Overwatch Report Review Now In Dota 2

Just as Valve promised last year, the Overwatch system has now finally arrived in Dota 2. As in CS:GO, Overwatch is a feature that allows verified players of good standing to review reported games for suspicious activity and disruptive behavior of any sort.

Along with Overwatch, players now have the option to report a match directly via the post-game menu. They can detail the report by adding markers to indicate moments where negative behavior was observed in the match for the reviewers to check.

Upon review, reviewers will vote for either guilty, not guilty, or "insufficient evidence" based on what they find in the report. They can also opt out of submitting judgement on cases for reasons including, “feel that [they] were not able to dedicate the appropriate attention level required to reach a verdict”. Reviewers will be rated with an accuracy score, wherein false convictions are given poor ratings leading to a loss of eligibility in participating in the Overwatch system.

Valve stated in their post that in order to amass a large pool of reliable reviewers, they will be allowing a large number of accounts to participate in the Overwatch system with them overseeing the progress for the next few weeks.

Bren Esports Triumphs At Mobile Legends: Bang Bang M2 World Championship

Bren Esports triumphs over Burmese Ghouls 4-3 at the grand finals of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang’s M2 World Championship yesterday, January 24, 2021.

After toughening it out at the lower brackets, Bren Esports climbed their way to the grand finals to meet Myanmar representatives, Burmese Ghouls, in a best-of-7 series and eventually beat them to become the best MLBB team in the world.

Bren Esports is set to receive USD 140,000 — or approximately PHP 6.7 million — from the winner’s prize purse of the said tournament.

1. Mobile players will be getting update pre-installation, however you will have to access the App Store or Google Play Store for this feature. No mention of Huawei App Gallery. Bummer.

2. We will soon be able to press and hold to automatically add enhancement ores for weapon enhancement. Finally, a break from all that fi*****ng.

3. Mobile players will finally be getting controller support. Specifically, the mobile version of the game will now soon support Xbox Wireless Controller (Bluetooth), Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, PlayStation DualShock 4 Wireless Controller, and partial support for iOS-specialized Bluetooth controllers. No mention of development for keyboard and mouse support for either Android or iOS. Inb4 “PC master race”.

4. Version 1.3 will see the new material conversion feature go live. What is material conversion? I don’t know. The specifics are still forthcoming.

5. Xingqiu’s Rain Sword and Fischl’s Nightrider Oz turret-thing (when Fischl isn’t on the field) will no longer proc Fischl’s talent Undone Be Thy Sinful Hex. Specifically, miHoYo designed this effect to only proc from an active character’s skills or attacks and they’ve made the necessary adjustments to reflect that.

6. Fatui Anemoboxer Vanguards can no longer counter Geo attacks.

7. Good news for F2P(BTW) players! Responding to complaints over resin mechanics in the game, miHoYo has promised that the events in version 1.3 not involving Ley Line Outcrops or Domains will not consume original resin.

8. Also the Battle Pass will now include fragile resin rewards. If you recall, a “Resin Pass” was accidentally implemented on PS4 last month, and it appears miHoYo has decided not to go in that direction. The experimental pass was set to cost another ~220 pesos per month.

Welcome To Valorant Patch 2.0

A new year begins at Riot Games’ hot first-person shooter game, Valorant, and with it comes the arrival of the second major patch of the game codenamed Episode 2. From the quality of life changes to the ranking system as well as an in-client regional leaderboard and the addition of new character Yoru, the stealth-based duelist, to the growing cast of agents in the game.

After the conclusion of three amazing acts from the previous episode, Riot's plan for the first act of Episode 2 focuses on the improvement of the rank system and how players climb the ladder. The new core ranking system implemented by the patch now involves rank rating shown through a progress bar after each game; this aims to provide a clearer view of a player's standing and progress through the different rank divisions. The same rank rating arrangement offers a way of protection for players from demotion after a series of losses.

Aside from Valorant's official regional competitive tournament, First Strike, players of every region are now able to enter and engage into the competitive scene with the addition of the regional leaderboards found within the client that showcases the top 500 players of each region. These leaderboards are updated in real-time inside the game and are customized to every region.

Yoru debuts in Valorant along with the release of Episode 2 as the fifteenth agent of the overall roster. Originating from Japan, this agent specializes in misdirection using fake footsteps, teleportation, and full-blown stealth as an ultimate ability to get behind enemy lines. Along with the changes to other agents and guns in the update, this patch aims to shake up the game's meta and provide space for players to experiment with the new changes.

Valorant Episode 2 Act 1 comes with an all-new battle pass and a rank reset signaling the start of the chapter featuring new cosmetics and featured rank rewards for players to enjoy. The season is set up to follow its predecessor with future updates coming in the next acts, with Act 1 ending on March 1st of 2021.
