𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗻-𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹

84 years ago, Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, passed away. Yet his words— “The real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people”—continue to shape the Scouting community.

Scouting has never been about what we can take—it’s about what we can give. For us, being a Scout in the Philippines means showing up for others, whether it’s helping someone, offering a hand when times are tough, or simply sharing what we can to make a difference. This is what it means to be a Scout.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines joins the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and the entire nation in profound grief over the tragic loss of three young scouts on December 12, 2024.

These bright and courageous souls embodied the true spirit of scouting—dedication, service, and friendship. Their untimely passing leaves a deep sorrow in our hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, and fellow scouts as they face this difficult time.

May their memories forever guide us, inspiring us to live with the same selflessness, integrity, and heart they displayed. Rest in peace, dear scouts.

𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓: On the accident during the Zamboanga City Council Jamborette 2024

The Boy Scouts of the Philippines – Zamboanga City Council is deeply saddened and mourns the tragic loss of three remarkable Senior Scouts: Outdoorsman Scout Geoffree Atilano, Outdoorsman Scout Kevin Emmanuel Iguid, and Outdoorsman Scout Alvien Gaspar. These brave Scouts, dedicated to serving others, made the ultimate sacrifice while performing their duties in preparation for the 2024 City-wide Council Scout Jamborette.

Outdoorsman Scout Geoffree Atilano and Outdoorsman Scout Kevin Emmanuel Iguid had been selflessly serving as members of the Service Team, assisting in various aspects of the jamborette's preparations. Outdoorsman Scout Alvien Gaspar, with his ever-ready spirit, was helping to carry a tent canopy intended for the Council Scout Rally—one of the key events of the jamborette—when, tragically, the canopy came into contact with an overhead electrical line, resulting in their electrocution. This devastating accident also affected others who were nearby.

These Scouts embodied the true spirit of Scouting—enthusiastically sharing their knowledge, skills, and giving of themselves in service to others. Their joy, dedication, and commitment to duty will forever be remembered and cherished by all who knew them.

Now, they stand before God, having fulfilled their duty in the most profound way. They are Scouts eternally.

The Boy Scouts of the Philippines – Zamboanga City Council stands in solidarity with the grieving families during this incredibly difficult time. We are extending our deepest condolences and offering support to the families of the fallen Scouts, as well as to those who are currently in the hospital due to the incident. Our hearts are with you all, and together, we will honor the legacy of these young heroes.

While the Council is making its own impartial investigation, it is willing to cooperate with the concerned authorities on any investigation.

May their sacrifice inspire us all to continue living by the values they held dear: duty to God, duty to others, and duty to self.

December 12, 2024 | We mourn the loss of our three young Scouts from Zamboanga City Council. This tragic event has brought immense grief to the Scouting community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones during this very difficult time.

The Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) remains deeply committed to the safety and well-being of all our Scouts. We follow strict safety protocols and processes in the planning and ex*****on of all Scouting activities, including jamborees, to ensure that participants are safe at all times. We are also looking closely at the details of the incident in order to revisit and strengthen our existing policies and procedures on the conduct of Scouting activities.

In the meantime, we are implementing a moratorium on all outdoor Scouting activities and encouraging our Local Councils to promote Scouting activities in controlled environments/settings. We will use this opportunity to equally capacitate our field Implementors in mainstreaming sound risk and safety management practices in Scouting.

As we work closely with authorities to investigate the circumstances of this incident, we respectfully request privacy for the family as they grieve. We also encourage everyone to refrain from spreading unverified information. The BSP is ready to extend any and all possible form of assistance to the victims, their families and the survivors.
