Budget Cuts for Education: An Outrageous Move to Deprive Children of Their Education
Editorial: Denver D. Manlangit

In an alarming turn of events, the Philippine government's 2025 budget has slashed a significant P12 billion from the Department of Education (DepEd). This decision is nothing short of an outrageous move to deprive children of their right to quality education. As the nation grapples with economic challenges, it is the future of the country's youth that is being placed on the chopping block.

The most staggering cut comes from the DepEd Computerization Program, which faces a P10 billion reduction. This program aimed to bridge the digital divide by providing essential ICT equipment and internet connectivity to public schools. In a world increasingly driven by technology, depriving students of these resources is a step backward. The move undermines efforts to prepare the next generation for a digital future and worsens existing educational inequalities.

Teachers, already stretched thin, will now face even greater challenges. Larger class sizes, fewer resources, and reduced support are likely outcomes of these budget cuts. This not only diminishes the quality of education but also places additional strain on educators who are critical to shaping young minds.

Moreover, these cuts hit hardest in low-income and marginalized communities. Schools in these areas are already struggling with inadequate funding and resources. By further reducing the education budget, the government is widening the gap between affluent and underprivileged students, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting opportunities for social mobility. Every child, regardless of their background, deserves an equal chance at a quality education.

Investing in education is investing in the future. When funds are diverted away from this vital sector, the long-term consequences can be severe. A less educated workforce is less competitive on a global scale, hindering economic growth and innovation. Education is also key to reducing crime rates and improving public health. By depriving children of a proper education, society as a whole suffers.

This is an outrageous move by the politicians in the government, showing a blatant disregard for the future of the nation's children. Despite grand promises and lofty words about prioritizing education, their actions tell a different story. All their words are just on paper, lacking any tangible actions to truly address the educational needs of the country. It all remains to be known whether President Marcos will restore the budget as he had promised, but if he does not, it will absolutely have a significant impact on the nation's future.

In conclusion, it is imperative that we hold our leaders accountable and demand that education be given the priority it deserves. The future of our children, and indeed the future of our nation, depends on the actions we take today. Investing in education is not just a financial decision; it is a moral obligation to ensure a brighter, more equitable future for all.

Will the government finally recognize the critical importance of education, or will the nation's children continue to pay the price for political maneuvering?
