Benguet State University (BSU) relaunched the Encyclopedia of Benguet Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) at the Research and Extension Building-Everlasting Hall. The encyclopedia was initially launched during the Benguet Adivay Grand Caรฑao on November 23, 2024.
In his message, VP for Research and Extension Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres encouraged the researchers to take pride in their work and continue advancing their advocacies. He emphasized that the book is not just a work but an evidence of passion and advocacy.
Following this, Project Team Leader Stanley F. Anongos introduced the Encyclopedia. He explained that it was developed in response to the needs of the Department of Education (DepEd) teachers for reference materials and also aligns with CHED Memorandum No. 02 Series of 2019, which states the integration of indigenous people studies/education into relevant higher education curricula.
Anongos presented the encyclopedia which is divided into three parts: the first part covers History and Ethnicity; Family and Kinship; Spirituality, Health and Well-being; and Politics and Governance. The second part explores Agriculture and Food Systems; Industry, Trade and Crafts; and Environment and Resource Management. The third part focuses on Indigenous Arts and Sports; and Indigenous Science, Mathematics, and Languages.
Benguet Governor Melchor D. Diclas, represented by his Executive Assistant David Cabuten, thanked the BSU researchers for their dedication and expertise.
โThis book presents significant in preserving the rich traditions, practices and wisdom of Benguet. It serves not only as a bridge to our past but also as a valuable guide to our younger generations to ensure that our culture and heritage continues to inspire and educate,โ Cabuten said.
He also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the university and the provincial government in the preservation of history.
Private Secretary Maridel P. Langbis, representing BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan, shared that IKS could also stand for Intellect, Knowledge, and Sustainability. This is because the encyclopedia is a knowledge source for sustainable practices and systems that inspires innovation and sustainable solutions to various challenges. It helps students, educators, researchers, and leaders build their understanding on traditions and it is a tool to preserve identity and support sustainable economic and ecological systems.
The messages were followed by the distribution of complimentary copies to the DepEd-CAR, the School Division Office of Benguet, the Commission on Higher Education(CHED) and International Affairs Services (IAS), the Magic +7 State Universities and Colleges (SUC) Collaborators, National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), and Elementary and Secondary Libraries in Benguet. The copies were handed over by Lumbres, Anongos, Langbis, and Cabuten.
In response, CAR - DepEd Regional Director Estela P. Leon-Cariรฑo represented by Education Program Supervisor Denia O. Tarnate, said that the encyclopedia is helpful in the curriculum, not only for teachers but also for learners.
Next, CAR-CHED Regional Director Demetrio P. Anduyan, represented by Supervising Education Program Specialist Menzie O. Kuengan, shared her takeaways and expectation on the encyclopedia. One of her expectations is that there will be improved agricultural awareness and appreciation and a deep understanding and respect to the indigenous culture and their contribution to society. Other recipients of the copies also shared their takeaways.
BSU Mountain Collegian staff Armi-Jay R. Paragas also shared a review of the encyclopedia.
