酒は体に悪いと本に書いてあったので、読書をやめた。

Sake wa karada ni warui to hon ni kaite atta node, dokusho wo yameta

It was written in a book "Sake is bad for you (your body) so I quit reading.

酒は体に悪いと: "Sake is bad for the body" と here indicates a quote. (Alcohol is fine too. instead of Sake, but I kept it specific).

Followed by:

本に書いてあった = was written in a book.

と the quote/source came from the written book.

ので because/so/therefore.

読書をやめた
I quit/stopped reading. (Stopped reading in general as an activity/hobby - Because a book said this).

Difference between 読書 and 読む meaning "read/reading/to read"

The nuance between 読書 (どくしょ) and 読むis that 読書 focuses on reading as a hobby or activity. 読む - focuses on the "act of reading."

So in this example 読書をやめた would refer to quitting reading in general as in they no longer read books and such.

読みやめた would mean they just stopped reading what they were reading at the moment.

The Japanese written words on the glass of beer means:

"Book says: Sake is not good for your body" so I quit reading book! 😂
