The University of San Agustin (USA) Publications (USA Publications, informally known as USA Pub) is the official student press corps of the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City, Philippines. Originally a high school publication of Colegio de San Agustin de Iloilo (former name of USA), it was founded on 1928 with its first recorded publication released on August 1928. The press corps publishes

The Augustinian Mirror (magazine), The Augustinian (newspaper), Irong-irong (literary journal), Dingding ni Gusting (community wall newspaper), and other special issues. Today it is one of the most awarded college press corps in the Philippines. It has received its first national distinction when The Augustinian Mirror was adjudged as one of the three best-edited school magazines in the country during the late 1950s.

Lopez Jaena Day

Republic Act No. 9070 indicates the celebration of the birth of Philippine national hero Graciano Lopez Jaena in the Province of Iloilo, December 18.

Born in Jaro, Iloilo City, Lopez Jaena wrote several significant pieces which were a few of the catalysts to the eventual revolution of the Philippines against Spain. Leading the Ilustrados and the Propaganda Movement with Marcelo H. del Pilar and Jose RIzal, they changed the lives of many through the publishing of La Solidaridad.

His birth was proclaimed an official holiday in Iloilo back in 1970, signifying the annual celebration of Lopez Jaena Day.

𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺

In honor of their service and compassion for community empowerment, three Augustinians, Reycard Tomulto, Dr. Ju-im Jimlan, and Inri Dominic Flores, were hailed as Outstanding Volunteers during the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA)'s Search for Outstanding Volunteers 2024, at NEDA VI Office, December 13.

This incentive aimed to recognize exemplary Filipino volunteers, volunteer organizations, local government units, and higher education institutions for their outstanding performance and achievements in empowering communities and promoting volunteerism as a way of life, fostering a culture of volunteerism as a cornerstone of nation-building.

Tomulto, a member of the Social Advocacy and Community Engagement Office (SACEO), is a prominent advocate for Cancervants, an organization dedicated to alleviating the suffering of young cancer patients, in addition to organizing activities under Agustino Para sa Tao.

On the other hand, Jimlan who graduated with a degree in Master of Arts in Education with a Major in Educational Management in 2012 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management in 2017 is an advocate for “Education for Sustainable Development” innovating a teaching approach called “TUKLAS-ARAL” that integrated "sciencetoons" or scientific concepts presented in cartoons which serve as instructional materials incorporating the foundations of environmental protection.

Meanwhile, Flores, former president of the university's student government and Red Cross Youth-Iloilo Chapter, was recently recognized for his exceptional leadership and community service during the 35th Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines.

University of San Agustin (USA) achieved a 46.72% (64 out of 137 examinees) overall passing rate during the 2024 Bar Examinations, which were held last September 8, 11, and 15. This achievement was higher than the national passing rate of 37.84%.

Among first-time takers, the university recorded a passing rate of 57.81% (37 out of 64), while 39.66% of repeaters (27 out of 73) passed the exam.

UGSAD Regional Gender Resource Network celebrated its 25th anniversary with an awarding ceremony themed "UGSAD's Journey: Celebrating 25 Years of Empowering Voices and Forging Inclusive Communities," at the University of the Philippines Visayas, Little Theatre, December 11.

The event was held to honor the contributions of UGSAD's partner institutions in the work of gender development, in which the University of San Agustin received an award of recognition.

"The road to achieving the goals of gender equality and women empowerment is not far behind. To all of us, padayon," remarked Dr. Rosario H. Asong, founding member of UGSAD.

Three individuals also received awards for their notable photographs which captured the essence of this year's theme.

Augustinian Inri Dominic Flores, former president of the university's student government and Red Cross Youth-Iloilo Chapter, was recognized as one of the two Most Outstanding Model Students in the search for the 35th Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines (JRMSP) during the awarding ceremony as part of the 62nd National Rizal Youth Leadership Institute (NRYLI), at Benitez Hall, Teachers Camp, Baguio City, December 5 to 8.

Flores, along with co-awardee Ysabelle Julyana Panganiban of St. Scholastica's College Manila, stood out among the country's student leaders, showcasing both academic excellence and commitment to community service, and serving as an inspiration for fellow youth to embody Rizalian values in pursuit of excellence.

Team Dugong Bughaw (TDB), along with partner organizations, organized "High Five, Kabataan: An Ilonggo World AIDS Day Initiative," empowering the youth towards inclusive and rights-based HIV programming and raising HIV awareness to stop societal stigma, at Robinsons Place Jaro, December 1.

The event featured a panel discussion with HIV youth advocates Rynavel Labiano, RN, Atty. Manfred Evanz Palcat, and Prof. Justin Francis Bionat, as well as performances from the WVSU Drag Community, UPV Choristers, and TDB members.

"Aside from remembering all the people we have lost, we also want to raise more awareness to prevent more AIDS-related death," expressed Tian Simpao, marketing manager of TDB.

This initiative also included free HIV screening and PrEP enrollment available to participants.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary

Celebrated on this 8th of December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary is commemorated as one of the significant events in the Christian Calendar, particularly for the Catholic community, honoring Blessed Mary as being conceived without stain of the original sin.

Defined by Pope Pius IX dogma of the Immaculate Conception — Ineffabilis Deus, in the year 1854, the said feast day reflects how Mary was preserved free away from the effects of the Sin of Adam (original sin), from the first instant of her conception in St. Anne's womb, in preparation for becoming the mother of Jesus Christ, Son of God.

As one of the primary Marian feasts, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception emphasizes the purity and holiness of Mary, marked by masses, processions, and devotion, reminding and inspiring the faithful about the transformative power of divine love.

In addition, with the said celebration falling on the second Sunday of Advent, which takes precedence under liturgical norms, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be transferred to December 9 instead of the usual December 8, as explained in a circular by the Archdiocese of Manila last November 14.

Feast Day of Saint Ambrose

Today, December 7, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of the patron saint of Milan and beekeepers, Saint Ambrose. He is also known as the 'Honey-Tongued Doctor,' which led to the usage of a beehive and bees in his iconography, representing wisdom and eloquence.

Born in 339 CE in Augusta Treverorum, Belgica, Gaul (now Trier, Germany), Saint Ambrose is revered as the mentor who brought the renowned Christian scholar Saint Augustine of Hippo to faith and baptized him. He is also a prolific writer who wrote extensively on the theology of virginity and commentaries on the Scripture, as well as on several early Christian hymns.

Furthermore, Saint Ambrose was considered a role model bishop because of his unwavering commitment to following Christ and giving his life to the church.

USADA rules Schools Division category in WSB Asia 2024

University of San Agustin Dance Arts (USADA) came home as champions in the Philippines Schools Division category during the Visayas Leg of the World Supremacy Battlegrounds (WSB) Asia 2024, at Ayala Malls, Bacolod, November 30.

With only a month of preparation, USADA and other finalists will compete again in the national category in Manila in January 2025 to determine the Philippines' international team representative.

"We want to give more surprises as we did in the Visayas leg of WSB Asia 2024. [...] Our target goal is to win nationals and represent the Philippines in the international stage of WSB," collectively expressed Carlo Berganio and Hayden Jolito, members of USADA.

WSB, founded by Filipino-Australian CEO Marco Andre Selorio, is a well-known street dancing tournament in Melbourne, Australia, which has now reached six continents, serving as an international gateway for dancers worldwide.

In celebration of its 44th founding anniversary, the University of San Agustin - Social Advocacy and Community Engagement Office (SACEO) held a Tilipunan Culminating Activity with the theme "Birtud sang Paghigugma, Kamatu-oran, kag PaghiliUSA, Padayon nga Ipa-ambit sa Tagsa-tagsa," December 4.

The event began with a Eucharistic celebration, bringing together partner communities from across Iloilo to highlight SACEO’s impactful initiatives and projects over the years; this was followed by a courtesy call with University President Rev. Fr. Arnel S. Dizon, OSA.

In collaboration with various university colleges, SACEO Tilipunan also hosted a series of informative lectures, such as the Tilipunan Entreprenuership Talk by the College of Commerce; Tilipunan AIDS Awareness Talk: Masigasig PHARa sa PagHIValo - Knowledge is Power: Fuel the Fight Against HIV by Team Dugong Bughaw and the College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology; and Hulag Komunidad by the College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Education.

Moreover, a volunteering exhibit was featured in the USA Pavilion in recognition of the various community efforts of the University Registered Student Organizations, along with the Tilipunan Tiyangge where community partners showcased and sold an array of products, from fresh vegetables to handwoven crafts.

Championing transformative storytelling and the unique experiences that shape personal and collective narratives, “Lost in Hue” by the College of Nursing, Nutrition, and Dietetics was declared as this year’s winner for the Sine Agustino Competition, December 4.

This was followed by “All that Lies in Between” by the College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology at second place, “Anna Clarita” by the College of Commerce in third place, and “Isa sa Sari Sari” by the College of Technology in fourth.

The Sine Agustino competition was judged by some of the most esteemed and respected figures in the film industry, including Gian Genoveza, the Director of Gibwangan which is the Bantayan Film Festival Winner 2024; Laurice Guillen, President of Cinemalaya; Erwin Hilado, the Executive Producer, Entertainment TV of GMA Network, Inc; Gina Alajar, Actress and Director; and Arden Rod Condez, the Director of John Denver Trending.
