Bilang paggunita sa Buwan ng Wika, hinikayat ng Iloilo Doctor's College - Basic Education Department (IDC-BED) ang kanilang mga estudyante mula preschool hanggang sekondarya, pati na rin ang kanilang mga g**o na magbihis ng kasuotang Filipino sa ika-30 ng Agosto, 2024.

Ayon kay Karly Rojas, kasalukuyang Supreme Student Government President ng IDC-BED at estudyante ng institusyon sa loob ng limang taon, ito ang kauna-unahang pagkakataon na idinaos ang Buwan ng Wika sa paaralan mula noong pandemya.

"Bagaman patuloy pa rin ang pagbangon ng IDC-BED mula sa epekto ng pandemya, umaasa ako na ang pagdiriwang na ito ay hindi magpapalimot sa atin ng ating pinagmulan at ng dugong Filipino natin," ani niya sa isang panayam.

Itinampok ng mga kawani ng paaralan at ng mga estudyante ang sari-saring kasuotang Filipino, kabilang na ang klasikal na barong tagalog at ang makabago at tradisyunal na mga Filipiñana, patadyong, at saya.

"Hindi man kami gaanong kumportable sa pagsusuot nito habang kami ay kumukuha ng aming preliminary exams, natutuwa ako na sa kabila ng kolonyal na mentalidad na nararanasan natin ngayon, may oras pa rin tayong pahalagahan ang ating kultura at tradisyon," saad naman ni Beatrice Querin, isang Grade 11 student mula IDC-BED.

Ang Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa, na may tema ngayong taon na "Filipino: Wikang Mapagpalaya", ay isang taunang pagdiriwang sa Pilipinas tuwing Agosto na layuning itaguyod ang pambansang wikang Filipino.

We honor the courage of journalists worldwide who risk their lives to deliver the truth with National Press Freedom Day as an homage to the Father of Philippine journalism, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, otherwise known under the pseudonym "Plaridel".

Today, as threats to press freedom persist, we stand with those who speak truth to power, reminding us of the ongoing struggle for transparency and accountability in all societies.

Press freedom is not a privilege granted by power, but a relentless pursuit by those who dare to hold power accountable.

𝙏𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙜 𝙣𝙜 𝙆𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙪𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙣

Sa bawat salitang binibigkas natin, may tinig na sumisigaw ng pag-ibig, pag-asa, at kalayaan. Ang wika ay hindi lamang kasangkapan sa pakikipagtalastasan. Kalakip nito ang makapangyarihang sandata sa pakikibaka para sa karapatan at katarungan.

Sa libo-libong katagang isinulat ni Rizal at sa oras-oras na talumpating binigkas ni Bonifacio, wika ang naging sandigan ng ating pakikibaka tungo sa kalayaan. Sa bawat salitang binibitawan ng ating mga dila, kaakibat nito ang kapangyarihang magpabago ng buhay, magpagaling ng sugat, at magpalaya ng puso at isipan.

Pintig ng puso. Hinga ng kaluluwa. Tulay ng isip. Ang konsepto ng “Wikang Mapagpalaya” ay nag-aalis ng pader sa pagitan ng mayaman at mahirap, ng nakapag-aral at 'di-nakapag-aral. Sa pamamagitan nito, natututo tayong unawain ang hinaing ng bawat isa, mula sa mga nasa laylayan ng lipunan hanggang sa mga may pinakatahimik na tinig, ang sangkatauhan ay napagbubuklod ng wikang Filipino. Gayunpaman, nabubuksan ang pinto ng oportunidad na nag-aangat sa bawat Pilipino mula sa putik ng kahirapan at kawalan ng katarungan.

Sa pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika ngayong 2024, nawa’y maalala natin na ang ating wika ay hindi lamang tanda ng ating kultura, kundi isa ring pagkilala sa ating kolektibong lakas. Damdamin natin ang diwa ng wikang mapagpalaya—isang wikang walang takot na magsalita laban sa mali at nagtataguyod ng mas makatarungan at makataong lipunan.

At sa bawat salitang ating binibigkas at isinusulat, nawa’y maging tinig ito ng pagbabago. Nawa’y patuloy tayong magsalita at kumilos para sa isang bayang tunay na malaya. Isang bansang pinapalaya ng sariling wika.

Passion. Dedication. Collaboration. These reverberating beats in their hearts created the rhythms of victory one step at a time.

ALIGMATA, a collective 15-member dance troupe from Iloilo Doctors' College has brought home glory and pride while reaching dreams in the art of dance. As dancing in itself is an unending uphill battle, what setbacks do they face in this dense reality?

Joining the recently held regional dance competition of West Visayas State University (WVSU), the team went through days of practice with incomplete members, tight schedules, and an out-of-budget time slot all limited to two weeks.

"We were also challenged financially since voluntary amon pag-join and ang amon expenses [were] from our personal pockets gid," said Ma. Theresa Arroyo, a pioneer dancer of the troupe.

Seeing a spectacular show requires a certain amount of trust, passion, and discipline to attain. Despite facing problems even before the night of their performance, these young individuals not only showed their talent to the people, but also the power of teamwork, cooperation, and determination at heart.

"It is a collaborative effort between the coaches and the dancers nga despite our differences, we managed to meet halfway," the first-year college student expressed as they finished their recent competition with a streak of gold.

Their victory last August 24 during West Crew's 5th "GIG - God is Good: RISE UP" regional street dance competition at WVSU against 15 other troupes in their category provided them a sense of fulfillment that their hardwork has paid off and a standard was built.

"Our group is a testament [that] if we put our hearts into something we are passionate about, it would always come towards the surface," Arroyo added as they have recently won silver in this year's National PRISAAYAWAN contest in Albay.

Behind the group's honors, they are nothing if not for their equally creative and imaginative coaches, Khim Millan and Mathew Labaniego, who were the paragons of their successes during the division, regional, and national PRISAA stints.

ALIGMATA showed that passion ignites dedication, and these two chambers build better collaboration. Their victory is the epitome of integrity, that amidst hardships, everything is possible.

"Para tayong ginisa sa sarili nating mantika," Senator Risa Hontiveros exclaimed during her privilege speech in the Senate.

Alice Leal Guo, the former mayor of Bamban, Tarlac, a woman inextricably linked to the POGO industry has mocked the system, defied justice, and left behind a trail of unanswered questions. This is not just an escape of a fugitive; it is a brazen act of defiance against the very foundation of our nation.

Guo's escape is a stark reminder that the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators or POGO industry, with its unregulated power and influence, has become a pestering wound on our nation's soul. It is a blight that bleeds corruption, inequality, and fuels social unrest.

As of August 4, 2024, the surge in POGO workers has risen up to over 40,000 Filipino workers in accordance to the report of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), underscoring the industry's unchecked growth and influence.

According to the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), it was confirmed that Alice Leal Guo is out of the country based on foreign counterparts' immigration record. Spokesman Winston Casio stated that Guo travelled to Malaysia on July 18th, then to Singapore on July 21st, and finally to Indonesia on August 18th. What may seem as a seamless journey hides a well-orchestrated escape; a blantant disregard for the rule of law painting a chilling picture of a system that is failing us.

Despite having her warrant of arrest, Guo managed to leave the country which raised serious questions about the effectiveness and integrity of our immigration system. The moment Guo showed up at the airport should have been the green light for law enforcement officers to arrest her.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) admitted that Guo's name was listed on the Department of Justice's Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order (ILBO). If the BI truly did their job, Guo could not have bypassed the system just like that unless there is foul play.

Guo is a stain on our national conscience. She adds as another symbol of systematic failures that have plagued our nation for far too long. Her issue is a call to rise above from apathy and smugness that has allowed this situation to fester.

This, on the other hand, is not merely just about Alice Guo, it is about the future of our nation. It is about ensuring that justice is served, the rule of law is upheld, and that our leaders are accountable of their actions.

As a campus journalist, I am deeply troubled by this situation. The escape of Alice Guo is not just another story, it is a rude awakening. This is a reality check of the dangers we face; the dangers of a system that is rigged against the people it is supposed to serve; a nudge that we cannot afford to be complacent in accepting the status quo.

This time around, complacency is not an option, now is the time to act.

In response to a spike in COVID-19 and Dengue cases, Iloilo Doctors' College (IDC) Office of Student, Alumni Affairs, and Sport Development has issued a directive for the mandatory wearing of facemasks in school premises starting August 19.

In the memo issued last August 16, the IDC School Physician recommended to the administration the need to implement measures that will help prevent the spread of health concerns in Iloilo City.

"The last few weeks have seen a significant rise in cases of Flu-like symptoms and Dengue," based on the census of School Health Services Office.

Both COVID-19 and Dengue preventive measures were emphasized such as wearing facemask, frequent hand washing, applying mosquito repellent, wearing protective clothing, and practicing Clean As You Go (CLAYGO).

The institution has been regularly cleaning the surrounding areas around the campus, and students are urged to comply with the new regulation.

The mandatory wearing of facemask will be implemented until further notice.

Defying the odds, Fritz Bryele Souribio of Grade 11 - Ganymede and Kate Allyson Tolentino of Grade 11 - Perseus have been elected as the new Grade 11 Representatives of the Supreme Student Government at Iloilo Doctors' College - Basic Education Department, August 9.

Souribio secured 272 votes, while Tolentino garnered 216, creating a significant lead over their three competitors—Kirsten Mae Niones with 130 votes, Lindzay Navarro with 90 votes, and Kheya Marie Garillos with 45 votes.

“Ang akon plans since grade 10 is to make this school a better place for everyone and maging safe place nila ang IDC-BED,” said Tolentino.

Souribio also outlined his vision for the upcoming school year, with a primary focus on improving the comfort rooms.

In the Grade 7 Representative elections, Phil Martin Dela Riarte and Bien Daniel Reyes tied with 25 votes each and to break the tie, a coin toss was held, with luck favoring Dela Riarte.

𝐈𝐃𝐂 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐏𝐇𝐎, 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐬

Extending their assistance to the community, Iloilo Doctors’ College (IDC) partnered with the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) for the IDC Medical Mission and Community Outreach yesterday, August 6, at Brgy. Paloc Bigque, Dumangas, Iloilo.

Along with medical doctors from the provincial health office, IDC faculty representatives offered services to the residents of Paloc Bigque and to other neighboring communities concerning their health including the College of Dentistry that offered free dental check-ups; the College of Nursing that took vital signs; the Midwifery Department offered prenatal check-ups, and family planning talks; and the College of Physical Therapy made stroke assessments and basic exercises among others.

“This is us embodying one of our core values, Compassionate Service. As IDCians, this is simply one of the little ways we can give back to the community,” said sir Philip Tolentino, principal of the Basic Education Department.

The IDC-BED also took part in the outreach program where they assisted in giving out food packs, medicines, and hygiene kits.

Arising new doors of opportunities, Iloilo Doctors’ College – Basic Education Department (IDC-BED) opened the academic year 2024-2025 in the IDC-BED Gymnasium, July 24.

With an inspired theme from the hit movie franchise, Inside Out, the program led by the Supreme Student Government of IDC-BED welcomed almost 500 new students from different grade levels.

“Overwhelming ang amount of new students however I’m very much excited for this upcoming school year since a lot of exciting plans are being planned for all to enjoy,” said Karly Rojas, the Supreme Student Government President.

Alongside the SSG, various clubs of IDC-BED displayed their talents: Teatro Sinag did an interpretative dance number; The Horizon, IDC-BED’s official student publication, exhibited a radiobroadcasting production; Saot Ta (the Dance Club) performed a hip-hop dance number; and the Young Musician Society offered various song numbers.

"In our recent performance, we highlighted the exquisite beauty of dance drama. This new approach demonstrated that our group was not just about acting, but encompassed all forms of art, including the powerful expression of dance. By pushing the boundaries of traditional theater, we inspired both our performers and our audience," stated Mary Albert Macariola, adviser of Teatro Sinag.

After the program, IDC-BED students proceeded to their respective classrooms for sessions with their advisers.

𝑰𝑫𝑪-𝑩𝑬𝑫'𝒔 𝑨.𝒀. 2024-2025 𝒌𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒔 𝒐𝒇𝒇 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕-𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏

As the summer break comes to an end, the curtains of Iloilo Doctors' College - Basic Education Department opened again as the students, parents, and staff gather at the IDC-BED Gymnasium for a general orientation for A.Y. 2024-2025.

Two days before the official opening of classes, the student-parent orientation commenced with a welcoming message from the IDC-BED principal, sir Philip Tolentino, followed by an introduction of teachers.

"We've reached more or less 450 students for the grade 11 only. Basically, we have more or less 13 sections for the grade 11," Sir Philip announced during his opening remarks.

Parents also attended for a series informative sessions on topics such as school policies, safety protocols, scholarship, and voucher programs for the students.

With the orientation done, the faculty heads assured the parents and students that IDC-BED has a solid foundation for success as the first day of school draws near.

Building the foundation of their success, the Supreme Student Government (SSG) and varsity players of Iloilo Doctors’ College - Basic Education Department attended the one-day Leadership Training and Team Building Activity at the IDC gymnasium, July 17.

Amidst the pouring rain, the students and facilitators aligned their key tasks and progress with the theme, “One Vision, One Team: Unleashing the Power of Leadership”.

“Despite the bad weather, I would rate it an eight out of ten. I am happy that we were able to pull it off. At the same time, after many years, this is actually the first team building activity since the pandemic and I see it as a successful one, and I look forward to many leadership training sessions to come,” stated Bryan Ruto, the event facilitator.

The student athletes and leaders were divided into seven teams as they participated in different learning sessions and activities including knowing oneself and each troupe making their own house rules.

“I have undergone a lot of training like this. Up to this day, I still put the lessons I’ve learned in my mind and my heart every time I serve in organizations. For first-timers, it is such an essential thing that they experience the said event so that for the whole school year they could apply it wisely,” said Louiesa Victoria Lutero, SSG Vice President.

Accreditation and Student-in-Charge Teacher Merrily Pedroso offered a lecturette about the experiences one should consider as a tool to help the participants not forget their role and purpose in embracing leadership.

The said event served as a kickstarting point to be an annual occasion for the next IDCian leaders through the years.

Stability was pledged and security was assured, yet the actions tell a different tale.

Leaving her projects behind, Vice President Sara Duterte has stepped down from her position as the Department of Education Secretary. It seems like Duterte does not want to be held accountable for the results of her actions.

One of Duterte's biggest projects that had impacted the Philippines was her project proposal of a new curriculum—MATATAG, which stands for (1) Make the curriculum relevant to produce competent, job-ready, active, and responsible citizens; (2) Take steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education facilities and services; (3) Take good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment; and (4) Give support to teachers to teach better.

As of May 24, 2024, the MATATAG curriculum was tested in 35 pilot schools across 13 divisions in seven regions. Approximately 267,900 teachers and personnel were trained for its implementation, which included training at different levels of governance. It's now being implemented for the coming academic year, but where's the person behind this?

Duterte proposed the curriculum and initiated nationwide pilot testing during her term as DepEd Secretary. But, upon closer examination, why did she leave when the proposal was at its midpoint? Is she apprehensive about its potential impact on the education system?

In her recent press conference, Duterte stated that, "Mga kababayan, ang aking pagbibitiw ay hindi lulan ng kahinaan kundi dala ng tunay na malasakit para sa ating mga g**o at kabataang Pilipino (My countrymen, my resignation was not due to weakness but due to my true concern for our teachers and Filipino youth)".

She expressed concern for the teachers and the youth, rendering her incapable of effective leadership in that sector, as it felt like she couldn't guide them adequately. This raises the question: why did she even accept the position in the first place?

Duterte graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy from San Pedro College in Davao City and has no prior involvement in the field of education. Her placement came as a shock to the public.

With that, Netizens are beginning to voice their wishlist for the qualifications of the next DepEd Secretary, hoping for someone who truly deserves the position. It's our duty as citizens of this country to voice our concerns about the system that governs us.

Duterte's resignation extends beyond her role as DepEd Secretary. She is also stepping down as a Member of the Cabinet and Vice Chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), although she will remain as Vice President, according to the Presidential Communications Office.

The reason behind Duterte's resignation remains unclear, as she is unwilling to disclose any information. This piques my curiosity as to the underlying cause of her resignation. What deep mystery is she hiding from the nation she serves?

Many view her resignation as the end of the UNITEAM alliance. During the 2022 election, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and Duterte claimed their alliance was not a marriage of convenience and that they would work together for the betterment of our country. However, Duterte's departure from Marcos' cabinet contradicts this claim.

After months having rough patches between their two powerful clans—including former President Duterte calling Marcos a drug addict—Sara Duterte's resignation might be a signal that the Duterte clan is ready to fully escalate its political feud with the Marcos family.

Duterte's political success is often attributed to the political dynasty and continuation of her father's, legacy. This raises another question about her competency as vice president. If she had to leave Marcos' office, could she effectively work alongside him for the nation's betterment?

How can the Philippines progress if its leaders cannot set aside their differences and work together for the nation's benefit? The nation’s future hinges on the ability of its leaders to prioritize the greater good over personal and political rivalries. If the President and the Vice President are now enemies, how can they run this country? What will happen to our country?

As a campus journalist, this makes me question whether our leaders are genuinely ready to serve us or if they are exploiting our lack of power for their own benefit.

Can we truly trust a quitter to be our leader?

𝑨 𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒓

To stabilize, to strengthen, and to sustain.

These are a few of the countless words that would mirror how stories of hope influence the youth from one pillar.

𝑨 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓.

A figure of various shapes and sizes, yet remains a beacon of courage amidst different circumstances in life. Filled with a tale of experiences, they live to write a story to tell.

There is no such thing as a typical "tatay". It may be a bald one, a tall man, a widowed man, a young breadwinner, or even a single mom. Seeing different versions of a dad, it seems like life is full of surprises.

In some stories, one may see a father in a complete family, in the peak of his financial stability, eager to provide every little needs and wants of his family. Meanwhile, there stands a father, working 9 to 5, five days a week, 365 days in a year, using his own wits, hardwork, and diligence, all to sustain the comfort of his loved ones. Despite the status of life, a father's love always prevails.

Let's look at another chapter: a mother of three, close to 30, who lost her lover, and continues to bring two cans of sardines and a packet of rice to fill their stomachs. For some, the sight of seeing another father standing beside a student on a remarkable event saddens them as they reminisce the souls of those who rests in eternal peace, leaving them only to hold unto a bounty of memories.

Despite all challenges, these hearts of steel seek to complete their task—to stabilize, to strengthen, and to sustain.

The stories are not only limited to all those written above, since every life varies indefinitely. But, in providing stability to the family, strength in those around them, and to sustain amidst adversities, they build a foundation that no problem could ever break.

Salute to every father, widower, single mother, young breadwinner, and soon-to-be fathers around the world. As story makers of life, may you continue to sustain, stabilize, and strengthen the hearts of the youth.

ILOPRISAA Volleyball Boys Secondary Level was hailed Champion during the WVPRISAA 2024 with IDCians, Jeff Marcon and Kaishan Bugna, included in the official roster.

The team went up against Aklan in the final round and aced three consecutive sets, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19, at St. Anthony's College, San Jose de Buenavista, June 15.

After being recruited by Central Philippine University's head coach, Mr. Jeffrey Alcarde, Kaishan Bugna was thankful for the support of his coaches and of the IDC-BED community.

"Grateful gid ko nga gin tagaan man ko opportunity nga maka-represent sang Iloilo since first time ko, kag napakita ko man nga makabulig ko sa team," said Bugna.
