The magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck offshore at Manay, Davao Oriental, on the evening of October 10, 2025, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to issue — and later cancel — a tsunami alert for parts of Mindanao after no unusual sea level changes were observed.
PHIVOLCS released a Tsunami Information warning that waves could rise over one meter above normal tide levels and might be higher in enclosed bays. The agency advised residents in coastal areas to evacuate to higher ground or move farther, while boat operators were instructed to secure their vessels and avoid shallow waters.
In response, local authorities immediately activated evacuation routes and emergency operation centers. Schools and public offices were temporarily closed as part of the precautionary measures. These swift actions demonstrated the coordination between PHIVOLCS and local government units, ensuring that communities were properly guided during the threat.
Moreover, PHIVOLCS explained that undersea earthquakes near the Philippine Trench can cause tsunamis by suddenly displacing the seabed, pushing water upward, and generating powerful waves. Because the quake’s shallow of the depth and offshore location matched these conditions, the warning was deemed necessary.
To strengthen preparedness, PHIVOLCS emphasized the importance of early warning systems and public awareness. The agency continues to conduct information drives, tsunami drills, and education programs that teach coastal residents to act immediately after strong quakes. Officials reminded the public that recognizing natural warning signs — such as a strong shaking, sudden sea withdrawal, or roaring ocean sound — can save lives.
Ultimately, the October 10 tsunami alert highlighted the vital role of science-based warnings and the cooperation between government and communities. Through timely action and public vigilance, lives were safeguarded, proving that preparedness and awareness remain the strongest shields against nature’s unpredictable forces.
