When we build on a firm foundation of Christ, we can withstand whatever comes our way. A foundation based on God produces steadfast faith and life, and allows us to be living examples to others.

14/11/2023

We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy. (NLT) James 5:11

Sometimes course in your life extends further than planned and leaves you with an empty tank. It can be exhausting even to the point of near tearful surrender. But remember what James says that you will be honored for your endurance. Keep on patiently enduring and remember to emphasize the treasures in life as those blessings will fill your empty tank.

Deuteronomy 6:1-7

What do you want to leave your loved ones? Maybe it’s money or family heirlooms, like a favorite necklace or beloved photo. But if you’ve trusted Christ as Savior, you have something far more valuable. Material things can be spent or lost, but your faith—what you believe about Jesus Christ—is precious and eternal.

Choosing to follow Jesus is a personal decision, one you can’t make for anyone else. But through your words and actions, you can lovingly point others to the heavenly Father. Over the next few days, we’re going to look at three ways you can share your faith.

The first way is to share what you yourself have learned and practiced. For example, you can tell others that ...

God will give us direction. His Word is “a lamp to [our] feet and a light to [our] path” (Psalm 119:105).

God will provide for our needs, drawing from His unending riches (Philippians 4:19).

God will enable and strengthen us, whatever we go through. He’s a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24).

God owns everything, and we’re His trusted stewards.

What godly principles are you passing on to others? Is there anything you would add to the above list?

25/10/2023

Then God said, "Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food." (NLT) Genesis 1:29

We are blessed with a God who provided for us from the very beginning. He still does today, when we have food in our cupboard. However, not everyone receives the same blessings you and I have. Let's share our blessings with others and provide for others as God has done for us. God sees this and brings you flowers every spring.

17/10/2023

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (NLT) Ephesians 2:10

You are God’s masterpiece. Through you, He shows kindness and mercy to this world. Don’t underestimate how valuable you are. You are God’s loved one, prized creation and He has good works for you to do.

Relying on Our All-Sufficient God

2 Corinthians 3:1-6

Have you ever felt the shame of inadequacy? It’s humiliating when others see that you’re ill-equipped for a task or lacking in knowledge on an issue. That hardly sounds like a positive thing, but it can be a blessing if you respond the right way.

Let your inadequacy drive you to God. Spend time in prayer and pour out your heart to Him. Draw comfort from His Word as you’re reminded of His care for you. He hasn’t abandoned you. On the contrary, God is using this humbling process to teach you two important lessons: to trust Him to work through your weakness and to depend on the power of His Holy Spirit.

Insufficiency reminds us to stop trying to do God’s will in our own strength. If we proceed down the path of self-sufficiency, we’ll become overwhelmed and burdened. But when we admit our inadequacies to God, the burden is lifted and we discover the contentment that comes with a dependent, trusting heart.

The Lord is sufficient for every need, and His strength is demonstrated in our weakness. If there’s an area in our life that we’re trying to manage on our own, let’s remember to relinquish control and depend humbly on the Lord. We can depend on Him to make us adequate.

10/10/2023

You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” (NLT) Genesis 4:7

God’s message of grace can be traced back to the beginnings of human history. Even when God approaches Cain, one of the original sinners, He encourages him! He tells Cain that He will be accepted if he does the right thing. Essentially, God pleads with Cain, asking him to choose God, choose to do this thing the right way. We always have a choice. It is in our power to do what is right. Watch out for sin and choose to not let it be your master.

09/10/2023

The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him. (NLT) Nahum 1:7

Our God provides us with a shelter to protect us from life’s troubles. The question is whether we accept his protection. When you run into a wall or trip over hurdles, it’s easy to feel defeated. If you travel through life with God, He will most definitely give you strength to overcome them and peace to enjoy it. Have you talked to God lately about the troubles you are facing?

Answered Prayer

John 15:7-11

After Jesus told His disciples to pray in His name, He promised they would receive their requests. Some Christians have taken this as an open-ended guarantee that every petition they make will be answered as long as they end the prayer “in Jesus’ name.” But such thinking only leads to dis- appointment and confusion when they don’t receive what they’ve requested.

Throughout His earthly ministry, the Son of God did only what His Father desired. Praying in Jesus’ name means following in His footsteps and asking according to His will, not our own. And how do we know what His will is? He tells us in His Word. Jesus said if we abide in Him and His Words abide in us, whatever we ask will be done for us. That means the more we pray according to Scripture, the more effective our prayer life will be.

Praying in Jesus’ name is also an act of dependence upon God. We don’t always know how to pray as we should. Though our knowledge is limited, God’s is infinite, and He knows every step He’s planned for our lives. When we come to Him in Jesus’ name, we’re trusting Him to answer according to His great wisdom.

A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted. (NLT) Proverbs 12:16

It's easy to become annoyed by irritating comments, especially if they're made by people on your questionable list. They tend to make us think, do, or say irrational things. Your day can then become unpleasant without you even knowing. However, others around you like your spouse, kids, or parents will be in tune. Instead of transferring your temper or irrationality, try to stay calm. The best way is to say a prayer asking God for patience within you and peace surrounding you.

Wait Upon the Lord

(Psalm 40:1-3)

Patience is hard work! This is especially true when we are waiting on God, who keeps to His own timetable. But believers who trust Him to deliver can look forward to rich blessing.

A person’s willingness to be patient reveals the value of what he or she desires. No one goes wrong waiting for the Lord to send His best in His perfect timing. Of course, believers don’t receive everything they ask for. At times, God simply says no. Other times, He adjusts our desires to match His. In our humanness, we can’t possibly know all the details of a situation. So we ask for what we think we need, based on our limited information. A submissive heart accepts the Father’s gentle redirection. When the awaited object of desire comes, it may not look like what we originally requested, but it will be exactly what we need.

Another benefit is that waiting patiently on the Lord is an awesome witness. When He responds, others see the reality of God, His faithfulness, and the wisdom of our commitment. In addition, our own faith is strengthened. Fools rush to seize their prize, but wise believers know that blessing will come in God’s good time.

God Acts on Our Behalf
(Lamentations 3:19-26)

We’re so used to a hurried world that we sometimes expect speed in our spiritual life, too. However, God “acts on behalf of those who wait for him” (Isa. 64:4 NIV). Let’s look at three reasons believers are called upon to wait.

God may be preparing us to receive His blessings. Perhaps we need new skills, maturity, or a particular spiritual insight before we’re ready for God’s plan. For example, David waited years to sit on his appointed throne. But when he did, he was stronger, wiser, and a battle-tested king.

Our Father is often teaching us to have confidence in Him. How would we learn faith if He immediately fulfilled our every request? In my own life, the Lord has often said two words: “Trust Me.” And He has never been late to meet my needs. No matter how we justify rushing ahead of God, doing so amounts to saying, “I don’t trust You.”

The Lord will sometimes withhold blessing to protect us. We may never find out why, but be assured that God carefully decides whether to place the object of our desire in our hands.

Waiting isn’t easy, but rushing ahead of the Lord can short-circuit His plan. When that happens, believers are left unsatisfied, and they often live with the consequences. Be patient while God works out details. His best is on the way.

A Life of Integrity
(PSALM 15:1-5)

David’s psalms often describe the life of integrity believers should have. Today’s passage shows us that God values our righteousness and honesty. To develop and maintain a lifestyle that pleases Him, we must ...

Formulate our beliefs on the basis of Scripture. The Bible explains our need for a Savior, Christ’s death for our sin, and the Father’s free gift of eternal life. Once we believe these foundational Christian truths, our priorities should flow from our position as God’s adopted children.

Submit to Christ’s lordship. Jesus tells us to deny ourselves and follow Him (Mark 8:34). Commitment to the Savior will help us stand against temptation and choose righteousness.

Build relationships with individuals who value godly living. The influence of other Christians strengthens us in our dedication and obedience to the Lord.

Acknowledge missteps. Everyone makes mistakes. But when we do, we should confess our sin to God and turn away from the wrong behavior (1 John 1:9).

Living a life of integrity isn’t always easy. But our Father, who understands our struggles, sent His Spirit to guide us toward godliness. Let’s ask Him to help us become more like the person described in Psalm 15.

The Desires of Your Heart

(Psalm 37:1-6)

Context is important to our understanding of God’s Word and His ways. But I repeatedly hear one promise quoted without consideration of surrounding ideas that explain it. People often tell me, “God said He would give me the desires of my heart, so I’m trusting Him to do that.” Before we can lay claim to this promise, we must notice one of the conditions in the first half of the We are to delight ourselves in the Lord (Psalm 37:4).

What does this mean? Delight is a high degree of pleasure, satisfaction, and gratification. Although we may readily claim that we feel this way about God, the proof is in our desires and actions. Do we long to know Him and take time each day to read His Word? Are we eager to meet with Him in prayer? Is He in our thoughts throughout the day, or do we forget about Him for long stretches of time?

We must also read this promise in the context of the other verses that speak about trusting the Lord and committing our ways to Him. In other words, God is the focus—not our desires. When we truly delight in Him, His desires become ours, and we want only what is in line with His will.

Defeating Discouragement

Text: Nehemiah 2:11-20

No matter what our position in life may be, we all at times encounter disappointment—and that can quickly lead to discouragement. Disappointment is simply an emotional response to a failed expectation or hope, whether because plans went awry or someone didn’t measure up. But discouragement is a state of mind in which we become faint-hearted and lose confidence in God, ourselves, or others.

When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem, its inhabitants were discouraged—the city wall had been destroyed, leaving them vulnerable to their enemies, and there were significant hindrances to rebuilding. But he encouraged them to start, explaining that the Lord had shown him favor by moving the Persian king’s heart to approve the project. Nehemiah’s confidence in God replaced the people’s despair and lethargy with the hope of success and motivation to work diligently.

We have a choice: Either settle into disappointment and accept our discouragement or—like Nehemiah—focus on the Lord, who is greater than any problem facing us. Although obstacles and disappointments may remain, God’s Word shifts our hope to His promises, good purposes, proven faithfulness, and sufficiency (Rom. 15:4). With His strength, we can persevere.

Have you ever wondered why we pray if God already knows everything? What do our prayers accomplish?

First, communicating with God connects His Spirit and ours. A relationship can’t survive if the two parties don’t speak with each other.

Second, God communicates His will to His children through prayer. If we’re seeking to please Him, then we will pray with an open heart and mind. In turn, the Lord impresses upon us the desire to ask Him for those things He wants to bring into our life.

Third, communing with God gives us the opportunity to participate in His kingdom on earth. As we learn to trust Him for answers, He gives us greater tasks in prayer. The Lord will burden our heart to pray for the salvation of a friend, people suffering from a natural disaster, or the state of our nation. When we see an answer, whether it’s big or small, we will know He blessed us by including us in the process.

God calls on His children to pray, because He wants us involved in His work. What a privilege for us to freely go before our Father and know that He is interested in what we have to say. In fact, He is pleased when we ask Him to meet our needs or the needs of someone else. And if we are praying according to His will, He answers every time.

Trust and Obey

(1 kings 18:1-16)

Faith and obedience are traveling companions heading to the same destination of pleasing and glorifying the Lord. They grow together simultaneously as they are practiced but wither if neglected. Therefore, God sometimes brings new challenges into our lives to strengthen our trust and submission to Him.

Elijah was a prophet who had proven himself faithful to the Lord. Even when he was told to appear before King Ahab who was seeking to kill him, he obeyed. Obadiah was another faithful servant of God who had rescued other prophets, but when Elijah told him to report his presence to Ahab, Obadiah feared for his life.

Fear short-circuits faith when we begin to doubt that God’s way is really best. If we allow anxiety to gain a foothold in our mind, we’ll respond by refusing to do what the Lord says. The result is a change of traveling companions. Instead of faith and obedience, we start walking with doubt and rebellion.

Great faith begins with small steps. When you follow God’s Word, an ever-increasing cycle of faith and obedience begins. Don’t let fear rob you of the blessings God has planned for your life.

Psalm 33: 13-22

Waiting on God stretches our trust in Him, especially when we are urgently longing for His intervention or guidance in a situation. From our earthly perspective and with our limited knowledge, it may seem as if He doesn’t care, but that is far from the truth.

God uses times of waiting to strengthen our trust in Him, and reminding ourselves of His character and abilities helps build confidence in our Father. So as you wait, remember:

• The Lord has all-encompassing knowledge of every detail of your circumstances.
• He has complete understanding of the motives and intentions of everyone involved in your situation.
• God’s power is greater than all your efforts to solve your problems. Neither you nor anyone else can thwart His plans.
• His eye is always on you during the wait, and He is your help and protection.
• His lovingkindness continually rests upon you.

Whenever you’re overcome with a sense of urgency or uncertainty, remember who God is and what He has promised to do for you. Although He may not work everything out as you desire, it will be according to His perfect wisdom and for your good—and in this you can rejoice.

How Do We Find Favor With God?

Text: Titus 3:3-8

Trying to earn the Lord’s favor feels like running a marathon with no finish line, climbing a never-ending mountain, or paddling frantically in the rapids while going nowhere. Such attempts to work our way to God are exhausting and fruitless because we can never be good enough or do enough to earn His acceptance. There is only one way to receive our heavenly Father’s favor, and that’s by faith in His Son, who did all the work for us.

God sought us while we were still sinners, and He sent His Son to live a perfect life and die a substitutionary death on our behalf. Christ took our sins and offers us His righteousness; all we have to do is believe and receive His free gift of forgiveness and eternal life.

The Lord’s favor is unmerited and cannot be earned. It is given freely to the undeserving through faith in Christ and continues throughout the believer’s life. It empowers obedience, gives victory over sin, and provides open access to the Father for prayer. God’s rich and abundant favor is readily available to all who will receive it by faith.

Facing Doubts About Salvation

1 John 3:19-24

Nothing drains spiritual energy like fear. When believers are repeatedly worried about their salvation, anxiety can cloud their thoughts and distract them from God’s purpose for their life. Furthermore, it robs them of the peace and joy that the Lord promised His followers.

There are several reasons why some Christians struggle with doubts about whether they are saved:

Sin. Salvation brings forgiveness and a righteous standing before God. But when we focus on our sins and failures, we may doubt that God could forgive us.

Emotions. Sometimes we rely solely on our feelings, rather than the truth of God’s Word, to determine our salvation.

Immaturity. Due to ignorance of Scripture or the slow process of change, new believers may begin to question whether they are truly saved.

Legalism. Some Christians evaluate their eternal security by their performance. If they fall short of a standard they themselves set, uncertainty can take root.

1 John 3:19 says we can know that we are of the truth and assure our heart before God. The word assure means to pacify and calm our soul so we’re not consumed by fearful doubts that prevent us from enjoying our new life in Christ.

The Promise of His Healing

God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. (Matthew 5:8 NLT)

After completing His famous sermon (read Matthew 5-7), Jesus came down from the mountain, and a l***r approached, asking to be made clean (Matt. 8:1-3). Under the laws of the time (see Leviticus 13), touching this man would have meant defilement—ceremonial uncleanness—which required ritual purification to regain one’s place in Jewish society.

Apparently physical contact wasn’t even necessary, as we read just a few verses later that Jesus healed a centurion’s servant with words alone (Matt. 8:5-13). Yet He chose to touch the l***r anyway—not only to heal Him, but also to make him clean.
Consider this: Though we may not have the man’s disease, each of us approaches God as if we’re leprous, with a sick heart in need of healing. What a joy to know that His presence—His touch—cleanses, restores, and sets us free.

Think about it
• The l***r bowed before the Lord, saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean” (Matt. 8:2). What does it mean to be cleansed (or redeemed) by Jesus?

• Picture Jesus stretching out His hand toward you as He did in Matt. 8:3. Is it easy to reach out and accept His offer of restoration?

The Difference Between Wants and Needs

PSALM 34: 8-10

Sometimes we confuse wants and needs. We can become so focused on our wants that they feel critical to our well-being. Then, when God doesn’t meet our “need,” we get angry or frustrated.
If we ever feel this way, we should ask ourselves, Is my petition essential to accomplishing God’s purpose, or is it only for my enjoyment? If we can’t complete the Lord’s plan without something, then it’s a need, and He will answer when we pray for Him to fulfill that requirement (Phil. 4:19).
God is also pleased to satisfy wants that fit within His purpose and will (Psalm 37:4). And while He isn’t obligated to grant wishes or fulfill any plans but His own, He says that those who seek Him won’t lack any good thing (Psalm 34:10).
Pursuing the Lord above all else means making our desires subject to His will. And when we “delight in the Lord” (Psalm 37:4), He’ll also shape our desires.
The heavenly Father wants to be His children’s greatest delight—the One in whom fulfillment and satisfaction are found. When that is true in a believer’s life, then he or she does not require a lot of “stuff,” entertainment, or people in order to be happy. Joy is in the Lord.
