The human body was only designed to go about 20mph. When we ride at 80mph (+) on our motorcycle our eyes are naturally low. This is true of brand-new riders and professional racers. We have to force our eyes up to allow our mind time to process the information coming at us way faster than we are designed to travel through space.
We have all heard that we should look up as far as possible. Well, that is not entirely true. Yes, we need to get our eyes up proportionately to the speed we are traveling, but we must also scan back to confirm that we placed the motorcycle where we wanted it to go.
This is actually a very rapid process of scanning up and then scanning back. "Where am I going, did I get there?" This process can happen multiple times per second. The faster our eyes can move, the more time the brain has to process information, and the better we will be at speed.
We often see students getting their eyes up. When we get our eyes up, things tend to slow down, which is comforting. The difficult part is the process of scanning up and back. We will see students stare at reference points for too long. Their eyes are moving too slowly. They get their eyes up to the apex, then keep their eyes on the apex too long, and they don't use all the track on corner exit because they were late seeing it.
This could be an apex at the track or a pothole on our favorite back road. If our eyes are not moving, we get behind the motorcycle and that is a dangerous place to be.
Lead Instructor Kyle Wyman and factory Harley-Davidson rider shows us how to get our eyes up to the corner exit early to makes sure he uses all the race track.
