๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐Š ใ€ฃ Marian Camp โ€˜24: Light, Hope, and Prayer

The annual Marian Camp successfully went underway on December 6, 2024. The event featured a series of activities organized by the Christian Formation Office, Student Affairs Office, and the Paulinian Student Government. With the theme, โ€œFollowing Maryโ€™s Lead Towards a Path of Hope and Prayer,โ€ it is a poignant reminder for us, Paulinians, to embody the Blessed Virgin Mary in our day-to-day lives.

The evening kicked off with a lively animation dance and various songs and hymns organized by the Christian Formation Office and the Paulinian Noble Society that set a lively and spiritual tone! Who knew our dear brothers and altar servers had grooves under their sleeves? And as flaglets of white and blue fill the gym, we give honor to our mother and model, the Blessed Virgin Mary in her procession.

The celebration also included performances, presentations, and talks that emphasized prayer, optimism and resilience; that amidst the darkness and the chaos happening in the world, there will always be light; a hope for better days ahead. As Paulinians, we manifest this hope through Mother Mary. All of this culminates in a Eucharistic Celebration, emphasizing how we should honor and respect our parents, just as we honor and love Mother Mary, following Jesus' example of profound love and respect for His mother.

As the camp drew to an end, fireworks lit up the night sky amidst the sounds of cheers, laughter, and Christmas carols. This joyous finale signified that itโ€™s the season to be jolly in the spirit of Mother Mary and Jesus Christ.

๐Ž๐๐ˆ๐๐ˆ๐Ž๐ ใ€ฃ E-trikes: Eco-Friendly or Nightmares to Public Safety?

Electric vehicles (EVs), specifically e-trikes, are the proposed solution to reducing the risks of global warming in terms of transportation. EVs are battery-powered machines that serve as an alternative to vehicles that burn fossil fuels. Although e-trikes offer several environmental advantages, they still have not covered at least any safety concerns. Personally, I also care for the environment, but the safety of people is something that cannot be disregarded.

There are two major reasons why I do not support e-trikes; the first is because of their dimension and visibility. According to Malaya Business Insight (MBI), the lack of girth makes e-trikes less visible compared to other vehicles, making it more difficult for other drivers to see them. And because of this, it might cause unintentional collisions leading to injuries.

The second and last reason is because of the open frame, short wheelbase, and small wheels that make e-trikes prone to tipping and instability. And since e-trikes are also used as a method of transportation, it means that they can be used by students as well. If we decide to neglect these concerns, then the peopleโ€™s safety, especially the students safety, will be at risk. I do understand that implementing this type of green machine is intended to sustain the environment, but it ceases the safety of people, and that is something that cannot just be ignored.

๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐Š ใ€ฃ Andres Bonifacio: The Father of Revolution and the Spirit of Filipino Patriotism

Every November 30, Filipinos honor the life and heroism of Andres Bonifacio, one of the foremost figures of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonization. Andres Bonifacio is also known as the "Father of the Philippine Revolution" and founder of the Katipunan (Kataastaasang, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan).

Andres Bonifacio believed that the Philippines could only gain independence through a revolution. On July 7, he started the Katipunan, a secret group for both peasants and middle-class Filipinos. It helped communities by organizing mutual aid groups and providing education for the poor. Bonifacio had a deep dedication to the fight of freedom and was courageous and devoted about it. He put a lot of effort into bringing Filipinos from all walks of life together by promoting solidarity and equality.

Onto this day, Filipinos still celebrate his legacy that continues to inspire patriotism, courage, and a deep love for the Filipino identity.

๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐Š ใ€ฃ Red Wednesday '24: A Spark of Faith and Compassion

As the sun dipped below the horizon on a cool November evening, a vibrant tide of crimson enveloped the campus of St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD). Students, faculty, and community members gathered in a collective display of solidarity and compassion for Red Wednesday, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the plight of persecuted Christians worldwide as we reflect on the theme โ€œOne in suffering, one in consolation.โ€

The Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) ignited the flame of Red Wednesday, aiming to spotlight the struggles faced by Christians under persecution, particularly in regions where they are marginalized for their faith. At SPUD, this event has transformed into a cherished tradition that emphasizes the importance of empathy, social justice, and the power of faith in uniting people across diverse backgrounds.

In a world often marred by division and conflict, SPUD's commitment to fostering a Christ-centered community of compassion and inclusivity shines brightly on this occasion. โ€œTrials, dangers, and hardships are all opportunities to live a life of witness to the faith. God will support and protect Christians if we persevere; we will win these trials, dangers, and hardships,โ€ said Rev. John Nguyen Thanh Vinh, the presider for the Eucharistic Celebration.

The observance of Red Wednesday commenced with a solemn Mass that echoed themes of hope, resilience, and compassion. As students and faculty gathered, dressed in red to symbolize their unity, they were called to reflect on their own struggles in pursuit of quality education. The pressures of academic life, particularly in a challenging environment, can often lead to feelings of isolation and hardship. The liturgy highlighted themes of hope and resilience, inspiring participants to engage in dialogue about faith and freedom. Following the Mass, the community lit their candles, praying for the realities of religious persecution.

In this context, the life of St. Paul, who once embodied the very essence of persecution before transforming into a champion for the faith, serves as a poignant reminder of hope, redemption, and the call to advocate for those suffering injustice. As Red Wednesday unfolds each year, it not only honors the lives of those affected by persecution but also rekindles the spirit of advocacy and justice that St. Paul exemplified. His transformation from a persecutor to a luminary in Christianity inspires todayโ€™s faithful to reflect on their own journeys and the impact they can make in the world.

In a time when religious persecution remains a pressing issue, Red Wednesday beckons each individual to be vigilant, compassionate, and proactive. The life of St. Paul serves as a testament that transformation is possible, that the call to love and advocate for the marginalized is a central tenet of Christianity, and that, ultimately, every act of kindness contributes to a legacy of hope and unity. In embracing this legacy, we are reminded that our voices can be instruments of change, echoing the words of St. Paul as we stand in solidarity with the persecuted, advocating for justice, and fostering a community built on love and faith.

On November 22, 2024, the Paniksik-Mathletes Society organized and led a workshop on Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Control (HIRAC) with guidance from their adviser, Mrs. Irish Udtohan.

The event aimed to teach students how to spot risks and hazards and to assess its likelihood to occur and its level of severity. Mr. Carl Joel Tilos who once conducted a research study about Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Control (HIRAC) during his bachelor years, was invited as the resource speaker of the said event. It highlighted as well the importance of research in improving safety measures.

This workshop reflects the universityโ€™s strong commitment to creating a secure and supportive environment where students and staff can thrive ensuring that SPUD not only meets safety standards but also leads the way in creating sustainable practices.
