OFFICIAL LIST: THE WINNERS OF THE 42ND NATIONAL BOOK AWARDS

The National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics Circle (MCC) are proud to announce the winners of the 42nd National Book Awards (NBA). The NBA is an annual prize that honors the most outstanding book titles written, designed, and published in the Philippines.

The 42nd iteration of the National Book Awards has a total of 326 titles submitted across 31 categories consisting of four languages: English, Filipino, Bikol, and Ilokano. Following the awarding of winners during the 41st cycle last February 2024, the 42nd cycle of the awards is set to be held in November 2024 in the historic Intramuros in Manila.

The 42nd NBA coincides with the preparation of the Philippines as it makes history as the second Southeast Asian country to be chosen as Guest of Honour in 2025 at the world’s biggest book fair, the Frankfurter Buchmesse.

Finally! A philosopher from the margins, Dr. Jeffry Ocay—a pilosopo from Bohol—has received the prestigious Best Book in Philosophy award for his groundbreaking work, 𝘾𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙨, in the 42nd National Book Awards. This recognition highlights the powerful insights and unique perspectives that emerge when voices from the periphery enter the philosophical discourse.

This is Aletheia Publishing’s fifth nomination and second win, a testament to the strength and originality of the works it champions. As Aletheia approaches its tenth anniversary next year, we could not be happier to reach these milestones—achieved through a commitment to publishing critical and often overlooked voices. Despite the challenges faced in an evolving publishing landscape, Aletheia remains dedicated to amplifying diverse perspectives and fostering intellectual growth at the margins.

Thank you to our readers, authors, and the entire philosophical community for your continued support. Here’s to many more years of thought-provoking books that dare to question, critique, and influence. Watch out for our upcoming publications!

Brother Karl Gaspar lives an extraordinary life in his 70 plus-years as a student, church worker, writer, Martial Law activist, peace advocate, political detainee, brother, colleague and friend. In his latest book, Buhi sa Kanunay!, he fills it with memories of people who have shaped his life – the mentors, priests and religious who shaped his foundation of faith, his friends and colleagues who journeyed with him in different stages of his life in service for the people. This is a book that shows how one person’s sojourn isn’t solitary – but one accompanied by fellow sojourners bounded by circumstance and shared commitment to justice and hope. This is a book that honors the people and the memories they shared with Brother Karl. -- Tyrone Velez, Column Writer, Mindanews

"This book is a much-needed introduction to the efforts of Bro. Karl Gaspar in forging a Mindanawon/Lumad indigenous philosophy. Gaspar's resistance against U.S. imperialism and its local oligarchs inspired multitudes. Imbong's initiative in calling attention to the plight of the Lumads is noteworthy. I hope this book can launch a spark that will kindle a prairie-fire of debate, argumentation, and inquiry into the neoliberal legitimization of our neocolonial predicament. - E. San Juan, Jr. (Emeritus professor of English, Comparative Literature, & Ethnic Studies, University of Connecticut)
