Polish freediver Mateusz Malina has made history by diving 210 meters (689 feet) deep without oxygen tanks, holding his breath for over 7 minutes. This feat sets a new world record in competitive freediving.

To achieve this, Malina trained to slow his heart rate, increase oxygen retention, and enter a meditative, ultra-focused state. The dive took place under strict conditions with safety divers and medical staff on standby.

This isn’t just athleticism—it’s a physiological marvel, pushing the limits of human endurance and mind-body control.

Had the chance to dive in as part of the Media team during the Freediving Mock Competition last july 12–13 in the stunning Pujada bay, Mati City. 🙌 Organized by Linaw Freediving Padayon Freediving and Sawom Davao Oriental — It was inspiring to get up close to the athletes as they calmly held their breath and pushed their limits underwater.

Equally grateful to work alongside fellow underwater photographers Kristine Vallescas, Mark Joey Jumaran Florentino, Reymund Palmera and James Malihan, capturing moments that words can’t quite reach. Mad respect to everyone who literally held it together on a single breath — you guys are something else. 🫶🫶🫶

To future athletes and future freedivers out there: this sport is for you, too. Don’t be afraid to take your first deep breath, dive in, and fall in love with the ocean one dive at a time. You’ll be amazed by what you’re capable of.
