RELEASE JAY APIAG!

Sabokahan condemns the unjust arrest of former Karapatan-Southern Mindanao Secretary General ang Spokesperson, Jay Apiag. Jay was arrested on trumped-up charges of attempted and frustrated murder in Digos City, Davao del Sur, yesterday, August 13, 2024.

Jay is a staunch human rights defender. He helped document and expose the human rights violations of Mindanaoans, especially of indigenous people. Because of this, the state and its forces have filed trumped-up cases against Jay in 2019 and he had been in sanctuary since then.

We call on fellow human rights advocates and defenders to support of call to free Jay Apiag! Dop all trumped-up charges and free all political prisoners!

ILPS 7th International Assembly: Defeat Imperialism

THE PROCEEDS OF THIS BOOK WILL GO TOWARDS SUPPORTING SABOKAHAN'S ADVOCACY

Two strong women activists, Bai Bibyaon Ligkayan Bigkay and her great-grandniece, Sharmaine are the protagonists of We Call her Ina Bai: How Strong Women are Made. They are also both members of the intertribal, intergenerational Lumad women’s organization, Sabokahan, through which they organize against the theft and plunder of their ancestral land and the harmful patriarchal practices that persist within Lumad communities.

Sabokahan members and supporters know how to answer the question “How are strong women made?” Alongside, supported by, and supporting other strong women!

At the heart of SABOKAHAN’s work is the education of Lumad girls and women. In many Lumad communities, women including young girls take up most of the responsibility economically. This prevents girls from going to school. SABOKAHAN campaigns locally, through education and organizing, for the equal access of youth, including LGBTQ+, to education.

To support Sabokahan's work, order your copy of We Call Her Ina Bai: How Strong Women Are Made. This book tells a compelling narrative of the extraordinary resilience and strength of indigenous Lumad Manobo women and their tribe as they go through struggles in a world that continually tries to undermine their human dignity, rights to land and life.

HELP US TELL OUR STORIES.

We Call Her Ina Bai is a compelling narrative of the extraordinary resilience and strength of indigenous Lumad Manobo women and their tribe as they go through struggles in a world that continually tries to undermine their human dignity, rights to land and life. This collective strength was told through the point of view of the living woman warrior from the Pantaron Mountain Range of southern Philippines--Bai Bibyaon Ligkayan Bigkay.

HOW I MET BAI BIBYAON
By: Kat-Kat
SABOKAHAN YOUTH

"Bai Bibyaon has sacrificed her whole life for us and our next generation. “What would be left for your future and the next generations’ futures if we give up now?” She reminds us of the importance of making progress whenever we feel burnt out. And she reminds us to always stand for what is right. She keeps Pantaron always with her deep in her heart. Her stories are stories of how beautiful Pantaron is; how they achieved victory in their struggle to protect Pantaron. She constantly tells us how our resistance is what will make a peaceful society founded on justice possible. For the next generations, always."

"The book We Call Her Ina Bai manifests just how selfless Ina truly is and how immensely grateful she is to everyone who has helped us. I also saw how willing she is to learn new things. Since she was a child until this day, she’s always thinking about the future of the next generation. That’s how selfless she is. Her love for our ancestral lands is undeniable. One day, she will be able to feel the sweet embrace of Pantaron again. One day, she will be able to set foot on our land again without forceful hands holding her down. She will come home to a land freed from constant threat and the future she has dreamed for her kins."

"Bai Bibyaon, for me, is what genuine love for one’s homeland looks and feels like. Amidst the continuing attacks of the NTF-ELCAC, AFP, and NCIP targeting Bai Bibyaon’s freedom of speech, we need the voices of those who know her to resonate. Stand up and join Bai Bibyaon’s struggle for land rights and self-determination."

HOW I MET BAI BIBYAON
By: Mon Sy
Lumad Bakwit School Teacher

"I first met Bai Bibyaon during a Lakbayan at UP Diliman. She stood amongst the forefront of the Lumads who walked to Quezon Hall, while we were waiting to welcome them during the salubungan. We spent the following days sharing stories and insights with each other, including Bai and other students from the university."

"Bai imparted such valuable knowledge to us: the nuances of their struggle for Talaingod, what her leadership meant as a woman leader to the Manobo, and her experiences being a bakwit. I have kept with me Bai Bibyaon’s courage, strength, and love for the environment and freedom."

"The continuous victories of Bai Bibyaon serve as inspiration to us who work within the Bakwit Schools. The nationalist faculty and educators of UP Diliman stand in solidarity with Bai! Pangiyak ki!
Amidst the continuous attacks of the NTF-ELCAC, AFP, and NCIP targeting Bai Bibyaon’s freedom of speech, we need the voices of those who know her to resonate. Stand up and join Bai Bibyaon’s struggle for land rights and self-determination."
