Gioachino Antonio Rossini

Gioachino Antonio Rossini (29 February 1792 – 13 November 1868) was an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote many songs, some chamber music and piano pieces, and some sacred music. He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity.

Listen in today as we explore the amazing music of this extraordinary gentleman particularly The Barber of Seville which premiered today, February 21, but in the year 1816. This opera is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music, and has been described as the opera buffa of all "opere buffe". After two hundred years, it remains a popular work.

Ridolfo Luigi Boccherini

Ridolfo Luigi Boccherini (19 February 1743 – 28 May 1805) was an Italian composer and cellist of the Classical era whose music retained a courtly and galante style even while he matured somewhat apart from the major European musical centers. He is best known for a minuet from his String Quintet in E, Op. 11, No. 5 (G 275), and the Cello Concerto in B flat major (G 482).

The Three Tenors were an operatic singing trio consisting of Italian Luciano Pavarotti and Spaniards Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. They were active between 1990 and 2003 and were termed as a supergroup. The Three Tenors are made up of three of the world's most famous and beloved operatic tenors.

Wilhelm Richard Wagner

Richard Wagner (22 May 1813 – 13 February 1883) was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor who is chiefly known for his operas or music dramas. He wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage works. He also revolutionized opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work of art"), by which he sought to synthezise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama.

Johann Georg Leopold Mozart (November 14, 1719 – May 28, 1787) was a German composer, violinist, and theorist. He is best known today as the father and teacher of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and for his violin textbook "Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule" which was published in 1756.

Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March 1685 – 28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period.

Today we will explore his music which involves the use of trumpets. Why trumpets? Trumpets are a very important instrument in bands and orchestras, but they are also well known for their presence in pop music, jazz and swing. Trumpets are known for being the center of many important fanfares and powerful pieces so this instrument is not for the timid.

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, widely known as Felix Mendelssohn, was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music, organ music and chamber music.

Today we will celebrate early the 215th birth anniversary of Mendelssohn who was born on February 3, 1809 and died on November 4, 1847 at the age of 38 years old.

Some of his best-known works include the overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream (which includes his "Wedding March") and the melody used in the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing".

Today we will celebrate the birth anniversary of Franz Peter Schubert who was born on January 31, 1797 and died on November 19, 1828. He was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Despite his short life, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 secular vocal works (mainly lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of piano and chamber music.

A RHAPSODY IN MUSIC

A Rhapsody in music is a one-movement work that is episodic yet integrated, free-flowing in structure, featuring a range of highly contrasted moods, color, and tonality. An air of spontaneous inspiration and a sense of improvisation make it freer in form than a set of variations.

To contrast with a Symphony, which is generally a four-movement piece, a Rhapsody is generally one movement. The movements of a Symphony will each have a clear formal structure, while a Rhapsody will be freer in its form.

A Rhapsody is all about dynamics: light and shade, high and low, loud and soft, happy and sad… It’s a story, a journey and usually quite the musical ride.

Johannes Brahms and Muzio Clementi

Johannes Brahms (7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897) was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, he spent much of his professional life in Vienna. He is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the "Three Bs" of music.

Muzio Filippo Vincenzo Francesco Saverio Clementi (23 January 1752 – 10 March 1832) was an Italian-British composer, virtuoso pianist, pedagogue, conductor, music publisher, editor, and piano manufacturer, who was mostly active in England. In 1781, he engaged in a piano competition with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Maria Luigi Carlo Zenobio Salvatore Cherubini hails from Italy and was born in 1760. He was an Italian Classical and Romantic composer. His most significant compositions are operas and sacred music.

Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc was a French composer and pianist. His compositions include songs, solo piano works, chamber music, choral pieces, operas, ballets, and orchestral concert music.

Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga

Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (27 January 1806 – 17 January 1826) was a Spanish Basque composer. He was nicknamed "the Spanish Mozart" after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (with whom he shares the same birthday but just 50 years apart), he was both a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young.

Tchaikovsky wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the current classical repertoire, including the ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.
