Here are OUR 7 Maintenance tips for motorcycle riders that has a Underbone and Scooter type of motorcycle.
1. Clean the Air filter.
- After gasoline, air is the most important thing for an engine. To keep your bike running smoothly, make it has a good
air supply flowing into the motor. An air filter keeps any junk from flying into your motorcycle while cruising down the highway.
2. Maintain your Headlight.
- Lights are one of the most important peripherals on motorcycle especially on Night or foggy situation.
Not to mention it gives you vision but also gives you safety such as signal lights, brake light and passing light regardless if it is a Halogen bulb or Led light.
- Halogen Bulb (Common bulb).
Advantage: CHEAP!, Easy to fit, Legal.
Disadvantage: short lifespan, not as bright as LED or HID, higher heat rate
- Led light.
Advantage: Very bright white light, long lifespan, low power consumption, lower heat rate.
Disadvantage: MUCH EXPENSIVE compare to halogen bulbs, not so much legal (Philippines)
3. Check Tire Wear and Tire Air Pressure.
- Overtime. tyres will began to wear down and lose thread. A good tyre thread is important for maintaining traction,
a bald tire (Almost no traction used tires) will lessen your ability to stop.
- Maintaining the right air pressure prolongs tyre life. improperly inflated tyres directly impact ride
quality and fuel economy.
4. Wash your bike regularly.
- Regularly washing keeps your motorcycle clean and prevents impurities like dust and dirt from enter its inner parts.
Washing also prevents rusting and helps maintain the bodywork's shine.
5. Change the Engine Oil.
- It is important to change the engine oil at least once in 3 or 4 months.
check the owner's manual for recommendations about how frequently you should perform this maintenance .
6. Brakes.
- Your motorcycle's disc brake use brake pads and brake fluid/oil and Brake shoe for drum breaks to generate the required braking force.
worn out brake pads, brake shoe and insufficient levels of break fluids are huges risk to your safety.
7. V Belts (for scooters)
- Belts are meant to last tens of thousands of kilometers and drive belt failure is a relatively rare occurrence.
The best way to prevent this is with regular inspection. Your motorcycle's owner's manual will have details on how often to replace the belt,
and what size belt to replace it with. The belt is usually checked with regular service intervals at your motorcycle service center.
If you are doing your own maintenance, it's best to at least have a look at the belt every time you change the engine's oil. Simply prop up the bike
on the center stand (or side stand) and unscrew the bolts to remove the transmission cover. From here, you'll be able to see the condition of the belt.
Worn belts will sometimes slip. This is pretty easy to detect as the way the motorcycle accelerates won't be in sync with your throttle.
Another good indicator is a noticeable loss in power, or a lower top speed. Worn belts tend to sink deeper into the pulleys, effectively changing your gear ratios and reducing the power transmitted.
