Buscalan Kalinga Tinglayan: A Journey to the Heart of Philippine Culture
The Philippines is a country with a rich history and diverse culture. One of the best ways to experience this is by traveling to its provinces and immersing oneself in its local customs. I've visited Buscalan Kalinga Tinglayan twice and had the opportunity to see it's culture. For everyone reference, it's a small village nestled in the mountains of Kalinga, located in the northern part of the Philippines. It was a journey that would take me to the heart of Philippine culture.
*The Journey to Buscalan Kalinga Tinglayan
The journey was a long and winding road, but it was worth it because of it's scenic route, breathtaking landscapes with a panoramic view of rice terraces. By the way, my friend, Justin arranged the tour for us and still organizing an event up 'till now (visit Polengwanders Travel and Tours page in facebook). Then from Tinglayan, we hiked for two hours through the mountains to reach the village. The hike was challenging, but the scenic view of the mountains and rice terraces made it all worthwhile.
*Meeting Apo Wang-Od
Buscalan Kalinga Tinglayan is famous for its traditional tattoo art, which is still practiced by the Kalinga people. The art is called "batok" and is done using a traditional hand-tapping method. We had the opportunity to meet the famous mambabatok, Whang-Od, who is considered a national living treasure in the Philippines. She is 106 years old but still tattooing visitors who came from all over the world to get a traditional Kalinga tattoo.

Aside from tattooing, the Kalinga people have a rich culture that is deeply rooted in their history and traditions. We had the chance to experience their way of life by staying in a traditional Kalinga house, eating their food, and learning about their customs.
My takeaways on this trip, visiting this place was a unique and unforgettable experience. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the Philippines' rich cultural heritage and the importance of preserving it for future generations. The journey to Buscalan was not easy, but the people we met along the way and the experiences we had made it all worth it. I would highly recommend visiting this wonderful place to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in Philippine culture and learn more about its history and traditions.💚
