Barangay Bagong Nayon: Numero Uno sa Antipolo
Located in the heart of the only component city in the province of Rizal, Antipolo City, Barangay Bagong Nayon was created only in 1989 through Batas Pambansa 798. The young barangay is bounded by Tulaken River in the north, Marcos Highway and Barangay Sta. Cruz in the south, Inalsan Road in the east and Barangay Cupang and Nangka River on the west. With a current population of about 57,120, the residents of the young barangay is comprised of diverse interests and belonging to the different economic strata of society. The first Barangay Captain of Bagong Nayon was Carmen R. Lazarte who was elected in March 28, 1989. In August 15, 2002, Ma. Rosario C. Biagtan was elected as the second Barangay Captain. In October 2013, the citizens of Barangay Bagong Nayon elected LARRY T. ONZA, as its third Punong Barangay. About 90% of the residents are migrants from other provinces of the country and from different areas of Metro Manila and integrating these people into one cohesive group was an immense problem faced by both the predecessors of Punong Barangay Larry Onza. With his election as chief executive however, what used to be a frustrating situation in the history of the barangay took a sharp turn. Kap Larry, as constituents fondly call him, is not only a dedicated leader with wholehearted fervor to his work. He also exudes the brand of public service rarely equaled by other barangay officials. Being hands-on in even the grimiest of chores, he motivate his peers by example and galvanize them into action by performing ahead of or side-by-side with them. Articulate, a good communicator, an excellent mediator. Kap Larry possesses all the necessary qualities any chief executive must have in successfully conciliating problems and disputes brought before the barangay. While he is most accommodating and understanding to those who, like him, have less in life, he is equally respected and venerated by the powerful and influential in the community. From day one of his term as Punong Barangay, Kap Larry served unrelentingly as the people's barangay captain and took the road of selflessness and sincerity never before felt by the citizens. Thence, Barangay Bagong Nayon made history being finally headed by a strong-willed and uncompromising leader. In his first term as Barangay Bagong Nayon chief executive, Kap Larry led his barangay in garnering one victory after another in various local to national competitions. For two consecutive years, Barangay Bagong Nayon became champion for float competition during the Antipolo Maytime Festival 2014 and 2015 and Best Float during the Antipolo Cityhood Commemoration in 2016 and 2019. For two consecutive years (2015-2016), the barangay was also an awardee as Most Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Committee in the province of Rizal and regional finalist in Region IV-A (CALABARZON). Likewise, Barangay Bagong Nayon was the consistent provincial winner as Most Outstanding Lupong Tagapamayapa in the province of Rizal for four consecutive years from 2016 to 2019. The Lupong Tagapamayapa of the barangay also emerged as regional finalist for the Component City category in Region IV-A (CALABARZON) for the 2016 Lupong Tagapamayapa Incentives Award (LTIA) by the DILG. For the same award, Kap Larry received a commendation from the City Council of Antipolo. Again in 2018, Barangay Bagong Nayon's Lupong Tagapamayapa won 2nd Place in the Component City category for the entire Region IV-A (CALABARZON) for the 2017 Lupong Tagapamayapa Incentives Award (LTIA). For the year 2016, the barangay received the regional award as one of the six (6) outstanding barangays in Region IV-A (CALABARZON) for Project Double Barrel (Oplan Tokhang), the Philippine National Police (PNP) campaign against illegal drugs and other criminality. The barangay was also a recipient of a commendation by the City Council of Antipolo for the award.
In 2019, Barangay Bagong Nayon was selected to compete in the top three slots of the entire country’s Cleanest and Greenest Barangays. DWBL Radio Station also recognized Kap Larry as Most Outstanding Public Servant where he served as commentator for, “Kasangga Mo Ang Batas” in 2017. During the School Year 2016-2017, he served as Chairman of Bagong Nayon 1 Elementary School Governing Council. In its almost 30 years of existence, Barangay Bagong Nayon has now become one of the most progressive and competitive barangays of the City of Antipolo as proven by its present condition and improvement of its underlying infrastructure. In the most recent barangay and SK elections of May, 2018, Kap Larry was granted TEN THOUSAND AND THREE HUNDRED FOUR (10,304) votes by the populace of Barangay Bagong Nayon. For the record, this is the most number of votes ever garnered by a Punong Barangay in the history of Bagong Nayon.
