The Game Changer: An Insight into the 12th Carolinian Summit

The annual Carolinian Summit is an avenue for student leaders and aspiring student leaders to hone their leadership skills and develop their knowledge in many different other fields. This prestigious event, which has been going on for more than a decade, is highly anticipated by both freshmen and returning students alike. Every year, the organizers prepare a theme and plot out a series of fun activities for the participants. The theme, which changes annually, is designed to suit the changing times and to address the needs of the greater Carolinian community. This year, the organizers decided to kick it old school by employing the use of a retro-themed arcade, reminiscent to those that peaked in the 1970โ€™s and 1980โ€™s.

In an interview with Mr. John Tyler Calderon and Ms. Honeylette Harriette Dy, two of the main organizers, this yearโ€™s summit is expected to be bigger and bolder, as the theme centers on holistic leadership and functionality. The organizers cited that this can be likened to playing an arcade game. Just as our hands, eyes, and ears coordinate when playing these games, diverse skills and qualities will also coordinate and work together in order to shape us into stronger leaders and individuals. Furthermore, they emphasized that efficient leadership can be reached by the full and harmonious utilization of all these parts. In more exclusive details, the organizers shared that the process of planning for an event with such magnitude and importance was truly a Herculean task. Certain factors prevented them from securing the sponsorships needed to make the event a success. However with grit and determination they pulled it off despite the uncontrollable circumstances that stood in their way. The success of their planning and preparations can be credited to their PR team, who served as invaluable assets in spreading the word and in making this event known to different individuals and organizations. Another silver lining was the huge wave of support coming from the freshmen, which comprise almost 96% of this yearโ€™s participants. With less than a week to go before the big day, the organizers were proud to share that tickets were sold out and that they could no longer extend registration, despite the popular demand. The organizers felt an overwhelming sense of immense joy and gratitude towards those who were instrumental in the success of the planning and preparation.

This summit is meant to serve as a platform and an avenue for leaders to hone their skills through a series of workshops and activities. It is meant to bring out the leader in each participant. As the organizers so eloquently stated: โ€œWe aim not only to develop leaders, but to create game changers.โ€ Leaders can only be true game changers when they are willing to embrace and accept different aspects of themselves, as well as adapt new strategies to cope with the demands and challenges of the changing times. The 12th Carolinian summit is happening this Friday, August 9, 2024, from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Holiday Plaza Hotel. Without further ado, let the games begin.

A Chat With Viviene Cabataรฑa

On the afternoon of April 26 Ms. Viviene Cabataรฑa, the TINGOG! presidential candidate, sat across from me in the corridor beside ES121 and had a conversation. This is what we talked about.

Hailing from the party not shared by the incumbent president, Cabataรฑa sporting her partyโ€™s neon pink shirt outlines what makes TINGOG distinct from STAND. She mentions how this time around they are employing a broader, more expansive and therefore more exclusive reach, hence their tagline All In.

โ€œ-we want to ensure that not only does the council exert all efforts to be all-in in upholding studentโ€™s rights and welfare, but we also actually include those different sectors and minorities in the university that deserve to be represented.โ€ She continues on by highlighting how in their current campaign this is being achieved, adding โ€œevery platform that we banner banners a different sector.โ€ Of those platforms, Cabataรฑa brings up Pride and Yunite for the LGBTQIA+ community and Accessibility Education for PWDs. She finishes by saying TINGOGโ€™s main distinction is its student appeal, adding โ€œ-since sauna pa weโ€™ve always been distinct because of our vision to be students first and to provide assistance, development, and empowerment.โ€

The TINGOG! Carolinian party in the past academic year has garnered criticism from students and even fellow councilors, Cabataรฑa herself having been the subject of a possible impeachment during this interview, a motion that has since been voted to not continue. When pressed on the matter of how to convince the Carolinians given her partyโ€™s reputation, she stands strong on her reasons why the students should vote for her. Cabataรฑa cites first and foremost her credentials and experience in leading, and how she has the track record for the job. She then echoes the previously mentioned mantra of her campaign, saying โ€œ-that itself is a reason that Carolinians should vote for me, because I will make sure if i sit as the president in SSC that in every decision that will be implemented in the university, they (Carolinians) will be included.โ€ Speaking specifically on her partyโ€™s reputation, Cabataรฑa acknowledges as she put it the โ€œthings that the students have heardโ€ฆ things that have been said about me.โ€ Despite these, she comments on how she has stayed humble and always striving to improve because in some of her final words regarding this matter โ€œ-no student leader is perfect, but it is our job as student leaders to constantly learn from the mistakes and the lapses weโ€™ve made, and I am capable of doing that.โ€ She ends by saying the mere fact she is running for presidency shows change and that her mistakes from before wonโ€™t be repeated.

When asked what should be expected differently compared to the current presidency if she won, Cabataรฑa once again mentions the involvement of every student. Discussing whatโ€™s occurred in the past, she mentions the failure in addressing the concerns of many sectors.

โ€œ-the plights of these different sectors, the plights of the entire Carolinian community will be heard, will be catered to, and that we will find solutions for them, proactive ones especially.โ€

She concludes by stressing how theyโ€™d be supplementing certain issues while at the same time ensuring that there is a sustainability wherein they can continue in addressing more issues in the future.

Tackling on what specifically the School of Arts and Sciences should look forward to if a Viviene Cabataรฑa presidency were to happen, she mentions a promotion of underrepresented programs as her answer. The Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and History in particular was explicitly cited by Cabataรฑa as a field that is not only unappreciated to the point of being dissolved, but also one that is incredibly important. She bemoans how unfortunate it is that very little effort is being shown to help invite in more students and promote these programs, and says that this as well as any concerns from these students in these programs will be tackled in her presidency. Cabataรฑa acknowledges how every school has their own grievances specific to them, and how SAS especially because of the aforementioned struggles has their own share of misgivings to be catered to.

Finally, appealing to the SAS student specifically, Viviene Cabataรฑa was asked what she can say to a student of the School of Arts and Sciences to vote for her.

โ€œThatโ€™s a really intense question. Kay I honestly admit na kanang Iโ€™m not the type to like tell people to vote for me. Itโ€™s always something na kanang I know Iโ€™m running for president but also at the back of my mind I also know na Iโ€™m not the type to convince people because I want my actions to show, I want my actions to convince them themselves. Ana gani nga the plans that I have, the personality that I have, hopefully, I am as kind as I want to be and the capacity I have to understand and listen I hope that translates to them then makes them believe na โ€œokay this is someone who I want to vote for.โ€ Because I want them to see na these are the plans I have for you and these are the things that I want to do in order to uplift every studentry, not only SAS but the entire university. And I hope that you can see that this is something that I want to give you, that I want to give, so that I can serve you better. And that, I hope, is something that they can see from me, that hopefully will convince them to vote for me. Because Iโ€™m just- putting SSC aside, putting politics aside, Iโ€™m just a normal student, a normal marketing student whoโ€™s living her life but somehow I had the call to serve, that I had an idea on how I can improve the student life better, and so Iโ€™m offering these plans and running for president.โ€

A Chat With Hans Balila

On the afternoon of April 26 Mr. Hans Balila, the STAND presidential candidate, sat across from me in the corridor beside ES121 and had a conversation. This is what we talked about.

Coming off his term and now seeking reelection, Balila clad in his partyโ€™s signature yellow shirt reflects upon the past year. When asked to sum up in one sentence each the biggest strength and weakness of his presidency, his answers were clear

โ€œPerhaps the biggest strength of the council was that it reignited the social civic consciousness of the Carolinians to the point that we were able to unite them in political campaigns and mass actionsโ€ he said in his gravelly voice. Speaking on the weaknesses Balila cites holding councilors accountable and better coordination with them as areas to learn from in the future.

Pressing further, one of the most prevalent criticisms of Hans Balilaโ€™s council was the explicit party divide amongst the councilors. When asked for a comment on this, he brings up how when discussing the partisan divide it was always his philosophy to set a middle ground. Citing further the released statements of accountability during the GADJA/Diskwentofest debacle as a manifestation of that philosophy, showing how a compromise was put on the table to no avail.

โ€œ-as councilors, as president and vice president, we are elected in our position for the Carolinian community. Therefore, we are beholden to the students who are watching every action that the councilors are doing when it comes to things like this.โ€

When asked what to expect differently, accountability and adjacently transparency are what Balila mentions in aspects to improve upon if reelected. He finished by saying โ€œwhat we think, in the next academic year, could further improve our operations in the council is that there must be more public accessibility on the documents, on the minutes of the meeting. In general transparency of the things that have transpired in the council so that the Carolinian community knows whatโ€™s going on in the council and consequently the councilors feel accountable to the Carolinian who knows what they are doing.โ€

Regarding if Carolinians should expect more of the same or an evolution, Balila emphasizes the many victories his council attained in line with the 9-point Carolinian agenda framework. These according to him include the revisions to the dress code and uniform policy, the continued autonomy of the SSC from OSFA, and the โ€œstrong political campaigns that weโ€™ve had that united the student organizationsโ€ as he put it. Balila continues on by characterizing a second term as the optimization of his first termโ€™s momentum.

โ€œIf youโ€™ve noticed, the Carolinians are being more and more participative when it comes to mass actions, petitions, dialogues, consultations, and the like. And we think that these can serve as a solid foundation the next academic year to further win more victories such as the abolishment, the outright abolishment of the conservative dress code and uniform policy, the reversion of the new anti-student body *inaudible* policy, and the review of OSFAโ€™s mandate among others.โ€

Tackling on what specifically the School of Arts and Sciences should look forward to if a second Hans Balila presidency were to happen, he mentions that as a SAS student himself he would address what he noticed as the โ€œinsufficiency in the facilities.โ€ He cites as examples the broken projectors, difficulty to connect to the television, and the lack of Wi-FI in parts of the building. Talking from the lens of a psychology major, Balila also brings up the exorbitant laboratory fees of many science programs and the substandard quality of lab equipment in spite of that. Balila also brings up how many biology and psychology students still have to bring their own equipment such as scalpels and the like despite the aforementioned expensive fees. He finishes it off by demanding the USC administration to be more transparent and accountable with the allocation of funds.

โ€œWe need to know, like where exactly is the money that weโ€™re paying for going to? And how exactly has the administration allocated these funds that theyโ€™re receiving from the students.โ€

Finally, appealing to the SAS student specifically, Hans Balila was asked what he can say to a student of the School of Arts and Sciences to vote for him.

โ€œWhen it comes to the School of Arts and Sciences, something that may be a common experience of all of the SAS students is that a lot of their programs are either unappreciated or unrecognized. Case in point, a lot of programs have been frozen already, sociology, history, and I think this goes to show that there isnโ€™t that much appreciation on the social sciences. And when it comes to our campaigns, our political campaigns, it is fundamental that we learn from the social sciences because the social sciences study our society, it studies the politics, the political landscape of not only the Carolinian community but also communities outside the university. So when it comes to that, we can further enhance the recognition that we have for the social sciences by having more dialogues with the administration, further promoting our programs, as well as calling for the resumption of the history and sociology programs considering their importance in the Filipino society. Because instead, we recognize that our education is colonial in that it prioritizes STEM programs because- the way our education system is colonial is that the programs that further benefit foreign countries for them to exploit the Filipino students is geared towards engineering programs, computer-related programs. And what happens is that there isnโ€™t that much scholarship for the social sciences, there arenโ€™t that many students on the social sciences, and we think that this in the long run can be detrimental to the Filipino culture and history, because instead of putting an emphasis on our identity instead we are more focusing on programs that can provide more capitalistic value on corporations for them to exploit. And because of that STAND recognizes that there needs to be more campaigns jud for the students of the arts and sciences.โ€

A Chat With Daphnee Jaralve

On the afternoon of April 26 Mr. Daphnee Jaralve, the independent presidential candidate, sat across from me in the corridor beside ES121 and had a conversation. This is what we talked about.

Wearing a blue barong tagalog, Jaralve, when asked why such an attire was seen throughout his campaign, answered comprehensively. It was a protest.

โ€œIโ€™m going against the โ€˜traditional politicsโ€™ that is present here sa SSC- SSC campaigning I meanโ€

He goes on to mention that wearing a Filipino barong instead of the โ€œcasual polo shirt with the logo and name at the backโ€ is not only a challenge of the status quo, but also a rejection of the fast fashion trend. Jaralve cites his membership in CAENSO and their advocacy of not subscribing to big fast fashion brands and instead supporting local Cebuano and FIlipino brands in general.

Daphnee Jaralve takes pride in the fact that he is running independently, but clarifies that he does not characterize himself as an outsider and doesnโ€™t believe that a presidency by him would have that mantra. He states that his philosophy is not to dismantle the party system but instead be the nonpartisan head that offers a middle ground that is beneficial to all students.

โ€œ-itโ€™s been several years that a lot of parties want to have a โ€œcolorless student councilโ€ but we have to advocate for a colorful council because we canโ€™t take out the colors inside but what we can do is to advocate for a compromise... and yielding decision that is beneficial for Caloy, Carla, and Carlxโ€

In discussing the topic of Caloy, Carla and Carlx which is a recurring motif in his campaign, Jaralve explains that it is a rejection of the term Carolinians. He explains that such a title shows the โ€œmacho feudalist nature of the universityโ€ and that he would much use a more open-ended term. He continues by reiterating the value of inclusivity saying that although the university already introduced Caloy other identities were lacking which is why he introduced Carla and Carlx.

When confronted with the question on how he would handle the party politics of a council when he is from neither party, Jaralve brings up a 2013 editorial article from Todayโ€™s Carolinian by Marloouize Villanueve entitled โ€œThe Ills of Student Democracy {THE SSC EXPERIENCE}โ€ He recaps how the piece tackled the bipartisan nature of the council ten years ago and how now much of the same issues persist. It is in this lens that Jaralve states that he would remind the elected officials that their duties lie not with their party but with the students.

โ€œ-so by me being there I will try to tell them, if youโ€™re here, if youโ€™re elected as a councilor and a VP remember you are not in the service of your political partiesโ€ฆ always remember that your main reason why youโ€™re here is to advocate the needs of Caloy, Carla, and Carlx.โ€

On the top of his list of things that need to change, Jaralve brings up the 21 councilor system and how according to him it is an outdated remnant of a past where the university was much smaller than it is now. The growth of USC both in population and โ€œfacilitiesโ€ is his stated reason for this and also why he advocates for councilors to be elected locally per school. According to him this would also tackle the disparity in representation, how the three biggest schools (SBE, SOE, and SAS) often get the most councilors due to their size and smaller schools (SED, SLG, and SHP) in turn get less. He echoes this sentiment of disproportionate representation once more when bringing up how this year saw no candidates from the School of Architecture Fine Arts and Design (SAFAD).

Tackling on what specifically the School of Arts and Sciences should look forward to if a Daphnee Jaralve presidency were to happen, he laid out one possible plan. โ€œOver a hundred days, letโ€™s think about a hundred daysโ€ Jaralve says โ€œcontact investors, contact like the telecommunication providers to have a cellular tower over the SAS building since the Wi-Fi is bad and I donโ€™t know how to fix the Wi-Fi because of the limitations of the USC adminโ€. He also mentions the current provision to only hold face-to-face classes in the morning, presumably to emphasize the need for strong internet connection when afternoon classes are often online. This interview is the first time such a plan has been mentioned in his campaign.

โ€œ-ang ma-ingon man gud sa akong friends didto kung manguyab ka sa SAS kay makagubag relasyon. Why? Kay dili sila motubag di sila muchat kay wa kuno signalโ€

Finally, appealing to the SAS student specifically, Daphnee Jaralve was asked what he can say to a student of the School of Arts and Sciences to vote for him.

โ€œIโ€™m not telling people to vote for me, but Iโ€™m telling them to join me, to advocate for this thing called change. Because change doesnโ€™t start with me, Iโ€™m no god, Iโ€™m no messiah, Iโ€™m no Jesus Christ, and I am no Katniss Everdeen, I am just a person collectively rallying the needs of Calot, Carla, and Carlx. So if you want to dismantle these norms, to end it now, because we canโ€™t have a clear answer because Iโ€™m sure this problem wouldnโ€™t be solved just this year. Itโ€™s a continuous problem but let us begin now than to never start at all.โ€

Jaralve ended the interview by handing out blue origami cranes because โ€œsome students donโ€™t read flyers.โ€
