‘PEOPLE'S PETITION FOR WEALTH TAX’
A flash mob of some 100 participants took place at Plaza Mrianda in Quiapo, Manila on Monday, January 20, coinciding with the opening day of the 2025 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos - Klosters, Switzerland, which runs from January 20-24.
Organizers designed the event to capture the attention of both the public and the media by leveraging the element of surprise, as they continued their calls for a wealth tax in the Philippines and across Asia.
The Asian Peoples' Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD), a regional alliance of peoples' movements, began the "People’s Petition for Wealth Tax: Tax Justice for Public Services and Climate Action" through a signature campaign at a media forum in October 2024.
“The campaign aims to directly confront the aggressive tax avoidance and exploitation practices of the ultra-wealthy and multinational corporations, highlighting the growing issues of poverty and inequality in the region. The ‘People's Petition for Wealth Tax for Public Services and Climate Action’ urgently demands that governments, not just in Asia but around the globe, take decisive action to enforce wealth tax policies,” APMDD said in a statement.
“It calls for the revenue generated from these taxes to be directed towards ensuring people's fundamental rights to essential public services—such as healthcare, education, housing, living subsidies, and social wages—while also contributing to funding immediate climate action,” it added.
