LOOK | Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan and Congresswoman Cindi King-Chan led the closing ceremony of the Urban Poor Solidarity Week 2024 with the theme: “One Big Happy Family; Bagong Pilipinas, Bagong Tahanan, Para sa Maralitang Kababayan.” The event took place yesterday at the Hoops Dome in Barangay Gun-ob.

This initiative was organized by the Government of Lapu-Lapu City through its Urban Poor Affairs Office (UPAO).
The celebration aligns with Presidential Proclamation No. 367, issued in 1989, which designates December as Urban Poor Solidarity Week to promote a deeper understanding of issues related to urban poverty.

The fun-filled closing ceremony featured many surprises, including the Miss Urban Poor 2024 competition, where contestants showcased eco-friendly and environment-themed gowns. Certificates of appreciation were also awarded for the Urban Poor Solidarity Walk and the Urban Gardening Contest.

More than 6,000 urban poor members from 350 urban poor associations across the city participated in the event. Raffle prizes, including an electric tricycle, were also given away during the celebration.

The Solidarity Week celebration fostered increased collaboration between the government and urban poor communities, emphasizing a sense of partnership and shared responsibility.

Congresswoman Cindi King-Chan also highlighted the importance of supporting the urban poor in Lapu-Lapu City. She expressed her commitment to the city government's goal of providing decent homes for urban poor communities and constructing more housing to ensure that everyone benefits.

Mayor Chan reiterated his campaign promise:"No demolition without relocation, and no demolition without financial assistance."

He also assured the public that urban poor residents would no longer live in squatter areas, ensuring that all members of the urban poor community would have their own homes.

Other attendees included the City Councilors, the ABC President, Basak Barangay Captain Jasmine Marie Chan, and other guests who enjoyed the event.

SM brings joy to Beneficiaries of ‘Christmas in November’

For beneficiaries in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, Christmas came early as the Senate Spouses Foundation Inc. (SSFI), supported by SM, conducted its annual “Christmas in November” project in these three regions.

Now on its 26th year, the first leg of the annual “Christmas in November” activity, kicked off in SM City Clark on November 7, 2024 where children from indigenous communities in Pampanga were treated to a meal, followed by an early holiday shopping at the SM Store. The day ended with the children enjoying a carousel ride in SM City Clark.

Spearheaded by Mark Lapid, son of Senator Lito Lapid and General Manager of Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, and supported by Mrs. Nancy Dela Rosa, wife of Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa; Ms. Maricel Tulfo, daughter of Senator Raffy Tulfo; and Social Welfare Undersecretary Emmeline Aglipay, the SSFI also provided social services via the Senate Assist caravan stationed at SM City Clark.

SSFI President Love Marie Escudero, wife of Senate President Francis Escudero led the Cebu delegation on November 17 assisted by Mrs. Kathryna Pimentel, wife of Senator Koko Pimentel; Mrs. Nancy Dela Rosa, and Ms. Maricel Tulfo.

The Cebu delegation hosted children beneficiaries afflicted with cancer and other chronic diseases under the care of the Kythe Foundation. Alongside, the SSFI extended medical assistance and social services through the Senate Assist caravan.

The third and final leg of the “Christmas in November” project for the year, was held in SM Lanang Davao on November 27, with Mrs. Nancy Dela Rosa, leading the delegation.
Beneficiaries from the TATAG IP Students Foundation enjoyed their lunch with the SSFI after shopping at the SM Store. There was also a whole day Senate Assist helpdesk at the SMX in SM Lanang.

SM has been a staunch supporter of the SSFI’s Christmas in November for more than two decades. SM has always believed in the power of community and the importance of supporting meaningful initiatives that make a difference in the lives of individuals and families.

Geeks On A Beach showcased government initiatives to boost the Philippine startup ecosystem

The Geeks On A Beach (GOAB) tech startup conference, held from November 13 to 15, 2024, at Jpark Island Resort and Waterpark in Mactan, Cebu, showcased key government initiatives aimed at further strengthening the Philippines’ vibrant startup ecosystem.

“GOAB has established itself as the most influential, must-attend event for tech startup stakeholders in the Philippines, bringing together key ecosystem builders, including the government, to drive innovation for the country,” said Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, Undersecretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

Since its launching in 2013 by the nonprofit group GeeksPH (formerly TechTalks.ph), GOAB has grown into the Philippines’ premier international tech conference, with its informal, beachside format encouraging meaningful networking, collaborations, and thought-provoking discussions on building the startup ecosystem.

This year’s GOAB brought together over 400 participants, serving as a vital hub for the country’s startup ecosystem. The event attracted not only startup founders but also key decision-makers, including investors, government supporters, and business incubators, fostering collaboration and innovation.

Expanding government support for startups

For the seventh year, the DICT partnered with GOAB, underscoring the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and empowering startups as mandated by the Innovative Startup Act (ISA) of 2019.

The ISA consortium, comprising the DICT, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), plays a key role in strengthening the startup ecosystem through collaboration, and policy development, and support.

This year’s GOAB, which has been billed as part of the ISA consortium’s Philippine Startup Week, featured key government figures, including DICT undersecretary Batapa-Sigue and National Development Company General Manager Antonio Mauricio.

“We want the NDC to be the official government arm supporting startups in terms of investments,” said Mauricio. “Our goal is to strengthen the Philippine government’s role as a true enabler for the startup ecosystem.”

Founded in 1919, the NDC is positioning itself to take on a greater role in government-backed startup investments, aligning its efforts with the broader push to build a robust and sustainable startup ecosystem in the Philippines.

Bridging Metro Manila and the provinces

Efforts to support startups outside the national capital are also gaining momentum. According to Batapa-Sigue, there is a stark disparity between the concentration of startups in Metro Manila and the untapped potential of the provinces.

“The provinces have so much potential, but the majority of resources remain concentrated in the capital,” Batapa-Sigue emphasized.

To address this imbalance, the ISA consortium is exploring additional funding opportunities to promote regional startup growth and make resources more accessible to entrepreneurs outside Metro Manila.

The government’s strategy also now includes fostering an entrepreneurial mindset in schools and improving infrastructure to create a culture of innovation nationwide. These initiatives aim to equip future entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in a competitive global market.

More government support welcomed

GOAB lead organizer and Symph CEO Dave Overton lauded the government’s increasing involvement in supporting startups.

“We welcome government efforts to support GOAB and empower the country’s startups through policies that encourage collaboration across public and private sectors,” Overton said. “We hope this marks the beginning of more backing for startups in terms of funding, streamlined processes, and educational support.”

As the Philippines continues to strengthen its commitment to building a thriving startup ecosystem, GOAB stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity in shaping the country’s tech future.

About Geeks On A Beach

Geeks On A Beach is a global conference that brings together hundreds of entrepreneurs, investors, innovators, and renowned figures from the startup ecosystem to highlight the nation’s accomplishments in the startup arena, both locally and internationally.

This year’s GOAB was held at JPark Island Resort Hotel in Mactan last November 13-15, 2024. It is organized by the non-profit organization, geeksPH, in partnership with the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), the National Development Company (NDC) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 7.
