LOOK: Heavy rains caused by the monsoon have triggered severe flooding in Bintulu, a coastal town in Sarawak, Malaysia, on Borneo Island. The flooding has led to widespread damage, with streets and residential areas submerged.

Some vehicles were washed away by strong currents, and many homes have been inundated. As a result, hundreds of residents have been forced to evacuate to safer locations. The images compiled by W Forum provide a visual account of the extent of the disaster. Authorities are likely conducting rescue and relief operations to assist those affected.

UPDATE: PANUKALANG GAWING 'OPSYONAL' ANG SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL APRUBADO NA SA IKALAWANG PAGBASA SA KAMARA!

Inaprubahan sa ikalawang pagbasa ng Kamara ang House Bill 11213 o ang "An Act Providing Education Pathways for Basic Education Students."

Layunin ng panukalang batas na ito na payagan ang mga kwalipikadong mag-aaral na hindi dumaan sa senior high school (SHS) at diretsong mag-enroll sa kolehiyo o unibersidad, o kaya'y kumuha ng technical-vocational program.

Kapag naisabatas, ipag-uutos nito ang pagkakaroon ng Honors Exam o advance placement exam na maaaring kunin ng mga Grade 10 students. Ang exam na ito ang magbibigay ng pagkakataon sa kanila na bypass ang SHS (Grades 11 at 12), depende sa kanilang resulta.

Ang panukalang batas ay isinulong ni Lone Pasig Rep. Roman Romulo, na kasalukuyang Chairman ng House Committee on Basic Education and Culture.

Ayon pa sa isang pag-aaral ng Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) noong 2020, isa lamang sa limang SHS graduates ang direktang nakakapagtrabaho pagkatapos ng graduation.

Samantala, sinabi ni Education Secretary Sonny Angara noong 2024 Regional Conference on Educational Planning in Asia na pinag-aaralan ng DepEd ang pagbabawas ng core subjects sa SHS curriculum mula 15 subjects pababa sa lima (5) o anim (6) na lamang.

LOOK: AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHERN LEYTE

On Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 7:39 a.m., a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck near San Francisco, Southern Leyte, with a depth of 14 kilometers according to second report of Phivolcs.

The quake caused damage to buildings and roads, including cracks in structures on Panaon Island and buckled sections of asphalt in Himay-angan, Liloan.

Classes were suspended in Maasin City and the towns of San Francisco and Liloan to allow for structural assessments. Residents are advised to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks.

LOOK: 6.4 magnitude earthquake tremor felt in Taiwan and 27 people injured, many houses collapsed.

Strong tremors of earthquake were felt late night in the southern region of Taiwan. Its intensity was recorded as 6.4 on Richter scale. According to the US Geological Survey, these tremors were felt late night at 12.17 am local time January 21,2025.

Taiwan's fire department said that 27 people with minor injuries were sent to the hospital. A child is also among the injured. A bridge has also collapsed due to the strong tremors of the earthquake.

PRAY FOR LOS ANGELES 🙏

As of January 10, 2025, Los Angeles is confronting multiple wildfires, notably the Palisades and Eaton fires, which have collectively destroyed over 10,000 structures and resulted in at least 10 fatalities.

Originating in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, this fire has consumed nearly 20,000 acres and remains largely uncontained. Located near Pasadena-Altadena, it has burned over 13,000 acres with minimal containment.

Approximately 180,000 residents have been evacuated due to the fires. The death toll has risen to at least 10, with expectations of further increases as search efforts continue.

Estimated losses range between $135 billion and $150 billion, potentially making these fires the most costly in California's history.

BREAKING : 53 people have been confirmed dead and 62 others injured during the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that jolted Dingri County in the city of Xigaze in Xizang Autonomous Region at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday (Beijing Time), according to the regional disaster relief headquarters.

Following the quake, China Earthquake Administration launched a level-II emergency service response and sent a work team to the site to assist with disaster relief efforts. Xizang Autonomous Region also issued a level-II emergency response to the quake.

Some 22,000 disaster relief items, including cotton tents, cotton coats, quilts and folding beds, together with special relief materials for high-altitude and frigid areas, have been dispatched by central authorities to the quake-hit area.

Over 1,500 local firefighters and rescue workers have also been dispatched to the ground.

UPDATE: According to reports, China has been battling an outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus or HMPV. As per the information available so far, causes symptoms similar to influenza as well as .

Vaccine development for HMPV has been challenging due to the complexity of the virus and limited research prioritization, as infections are often mild and overlap with other respiratory illnesses.

Despite this, scientists are actively working on creating a vaccine, leveraging advancements in RNA and protein-based technologies. In the meantime, prevention relies on good hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing, wearing masks in crowded places, and avoiding close contact with people showing symptoms of respiratory illness.

Strengthening immunity through vaccines for other respiratory infections, like flu and COVID-19, can also help reduce the risk of complications from HMPV.
