Small-Scale Rice and Corn Millers Face Collapse Amid Import Challenges

Over the past decade, thousands of small-scale rice and corn millers in the Philippines have closed, leaving over 1,000 barangays without local milling services. Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data shows a 6.3% drop in barangays with rice and corn mills, from 16,476 in 2013 to 15,436 in 2023.

This decline is largely driven by competition from large milling businesses benefiting from cheaper imported grains. The Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. (PCAFI) attributes this trend to deregulation and reduced tariffs on imports. PCAFI President Danilo Fausto warned that large-scale millers dominate the market, leaving smaller operators struggling to survive.

"The loss of small millers is not just economic but deeply social," Fausto said, as rural communities lose vital milling services.

PSA data highlights the growing reliance on imports, with the rice import dependency ratio jumping from 8.1% in 2012 to 23% in 2022. Meanwhile, recent tariff cuts—15% for rice and as low as 5% for corn—have further jeopardized small millers. By late 2022, only 12,376 barangays had rice mills, and 4,578 had corn mills.

These closures threaten farmers’ livelihoods and rural food security. Advocacy groups are urging government action, including subsidies for equipment upgrades, low-interest loans, and tighter import controls.

Saving small-scale millers is crucial to protecting rural livelihoods and ensuring the nation's food security. Without intervention, more communities risk losing these essential services.

KOKO LEADS MARIKINA CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE PREFERENCE SURVEY; QUIMBO STRONG IN DISTRICT 2

Marikina City, January 2, 2025 – A recent survey, “Pulso ng Marikeños,” conducted from December 16 to 30, 2024, reveals strong voter preference for specific candidates in Marikina’s upcoming congressional elections.

The survey polled 2,800 respondents in District 1 and 2,900 in District 2.

District 1:

Senate Minority Floor Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III enjoys a commanding lead in District 1 with 2,200 votes (78.57%).

Respondents cited his experience as a veteran lawmaker, his ability to push for legislative measures beneficial to Marikeños, and his existing programs like “BTS” (Baha, Trabaho, Sapatos), medical missions, livelihood initiatives, and other community assistance as key factors in their support.

Marikina Mayor Marcelino "Marcy" Teodoro (NUP) received 600 votes (21.43%).

District 2:

In District 2, former House Deputy Speaker Romero "Miro" Quimbo secured the highest number of votes with 1,500 (51.72%), attributed by respondents to his programs for Marikina residents and his legislative track record. Donn Carlo Favis (NUP) received 700 votes (24.14%), while Mauro Arce and Jose Jaime Enage (both Independent) garnered 450 votes (15.52%) and 250 votes (8.62%), respectively.

The low vote count for Marcelino Teodoro in District 1, according to some respondents, is due to his recent disqualification by the COMELEC regarding his residency, leading to respondent concerns about stray votes.

Another issue is why the mayor is silent on Marikina City’s 3.615 billion debt.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III called on all Filipinos to support the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) by watching the films currently showing.

He emphasized the importance of celebrating Filipino cinema and supporting local filmmakers.

Pimentel said.

The veteran lawmaker cited the significance of the MMFF as a platform showcasing the creativity and artistry of Filipino filmmakers.

He believes that supporting local films is crucial for the growth and development of the Philippine film industry.

He expressed confidence that this year’s MMFF entries will provide entertainment and set the bar higher for Filipino movies.

The ten films featured in the MMFF 2024 are: “And the Breadwinner Is…,” “Espantaho,” “Green Bones,” “Hold Me Close,” “Isang Himala,” “My Future You,” “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital,” “The Kingdom,” “Topakk,” and “Uninvited.”

😀 Parang OA (over acting) na kase minsan.
