It turns out it wasn’t just a story,
because this orature came to life again.
Towards the end of last year, Block J of USC SHS - STEM made a documentary called “Lanug ug Kasikas”, which is about the mysterious old railways in Cebu, with the story centered around its path in the City of Carcar. However, these railways were destroyed during World War II and was never repaired again. As the synopsis goes, how come a certain Mang Teony, a resident of Carcar, heard screeches of a train when it wasn’t even there anymore?
It wasn’t until about a few days ago when some people started commenting on our Facebook post with the documentary. A resident of Carcar also privately messaged our page. What could it be? It turns out that some residents of Carcar claimed to have heard screeches of the train again — on the night of the 16th of June, 2020. What’s new, however, is that they’ve also heard of what seemingly was a sound of a girl, screaming and crying.
While this was another terrifying yet mysterious chapter added to the already-mysterious nature of “Lanug ug Kasikas”, or what we Cebuanos would rather say — “makapanimbawt og balhibo”, this gives us students, who rigoriously researched on this story, a sense of fulfillment. Because it was never about just complying for a PT, but rather — it is to shed light on the untold and hidden stories of the past so that other people may find them again.
And indeed, some already did.
Up to this day, we are beyond grateful for our teachers, especially Sir Justy P. Tuquib, for giving us the opportunity to do what we have done.
As what we have said in our documentary,
history has taught us a lot of things. It gave us something to believe in our minds, and something to ponder in our hearts. Whether it was the screeches Mang Teony heard, or rather the history that was given, it comes down to one thing — orature, the foundation of literature, to give colors to the dynamic state of time.
