Kanlaon Volcano “increased in activity” still under Alert Level 1

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvocs) recorded 41 volcanic earthquakes at Kanlaon in an advisory dated July 3, 2022 released just after it Celebrated its Charter Day last July 1-2.

The Kanlaon Volcano is Stratovolcano with an elevation of 2,465m. On December 27, 2015, an ash eruption occurred at Kanlaon's active crater. The eruption plume reached as high as 3,281 ft (1,000 m).

Just recently Philvocs recorded, tremors includes seven “very shallow” tornillo signals that could be associated with volcanic gas movement along with the fractures within the upper volcanic slopes.

Ground deformation date from continuous GPS measurements indicate short-term slight indication of the lower and mid slops since January.
Philvocs said “the increased seismic activity and short-term ground deformation are likely caused by shallow hydrothermal process beneath the edifice that could generate phreatic or steam-driven eruptions from the summit crater.”

In the event of Pyroclasic flow, DROMIC-6 estimated around 602,346 individuals will be affected in 6 LGUs and the Lava flow will affect around 214,186 families in 13 LGUs in the area.

As per advisory received from Mr. Ben Tanatan of PHIVOLCS, Canlaon Sub-station, and being confirmed thru call at La Carlota Sub-station, the increased seismic activity and short- term ground deformation are likely caused by shallow hydrothermal processes beneath the edifice that could generate phreatic or steam-driven eruption from the summit crater.
As part of Information Education Campaign (IEC) and also monitoring on the residents near the foot of the Volcano, the LDRRMO Personnel conducts Ocular Inspection at the areas near the 4-6 kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). As we interviewed the respondents, no adverse effect they felt except one from Sitio Alabasi, Barangay Masulog wherein, she felt that there was a slight shaking that happened at about 7:00 am, January 21,2022.
We would like to remind the public to remain calm and be vigilant as we pray together to spare us all on this eminent activity of our dear Mt. Kanlaon Volcano.
