St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral

The church, was established by Fray Pedro de San Agustin, O.A.R. around 1626. However, the structure constantly suffered due to enemy attacks.

In 1779, The Church was rebuilt with the use of wood, lumber and nipa under Fray Pedro de Santa Bรกrbara, O.A.R. and was inaugurated on August 28, 1780 coinciding with the feast day of St. Augustine of Hippo.

Unfortunately, the church was heavily damaged once again in 1831 when fire broke out in the village. The church was once rebuilt once again under Fray Simon Loscos de Santa Catalina, O.A.R. in 1841 using stone, coral, and metal and was inaugurated in 1851 following the baroque architecture.

In 1888, was the mission cross adjacent to this church was planted under the term of Fray Ramon Zueco de San Joaquin, O.A.R. Towards the end of World War II, the church along with most of the town was bombed by US planes.

Archbishop James T.G. Hayes, SJ. rebuilt the church using concrete following a neo-gothic style. Stained glass windows were donated by the Madames of the Sacred Heart all the way from New York. (CDO LGU)
