Shortly after the College of Education's orientation, first-year students from the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA) and the College of Health and Allied Sciences (CHAS) attended their orientation session at Gymnasium 1 today, August 29th.

As for our BSN program, we've produced hundreds of graduates with approximately a 90% passing rate on the board exams," he said, assuring the students that they had made the right choice in selecting the university.

The program then continued with discussions on important details regarding philosophical objectives, academic affairs, and other administrative matters that freshmen should know about the university.

The first-year students' orientation spans two days, with sessions continuing tomorrow, August 30th, for the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the College of Computing Studies (CCS) in the morning, followed by the College of Engineering (COE) in the afternoon.

The university recently held its 2nd research capacity-building training on August 9, with the theme "AI Revolution in Education: Tools, Ethics, and Innovation for Research Excellence," indicating the university's move to integrate AI tools among students and faculty in education, research, and ethical practices.

The training seminar featured five speakers who discussed various topics and aspects of artificial intelligence in the educational field and how the university will use AI to continue its goal of fostering academic excellence and innovation.

The event, conducted by the Office of the Vice President for Planning, Research, and Extension, gathered all faculty members for a day-long session in the Gymnasium.

𝐀𝐈 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞

Keynote speaker Doc Ligot, an AI expert and founder of CirroLytix and Data Ethics PH, noted during his session "Unleashing the Power of Artificial Intelligence" that artificial intelligence's current predicament is similar to how photography was not considered art during the 19th century, suggesting that it is in human nature to resist technological advancement.

"We hear these extreme views of AI, like that it is dumb or that it can kill… what everyone has to understand is that AI is powerful, but it is not powerful enough," Mr. Ligot said.

Later, during an open discussion with the faculty members, Mr. Ligot discussed how AI tools can serve as an unlimited source of examples that can improve how teachers operate in the educational sphere. In line with this, he also shared that adapting AI in education means changing the curriculum to enhance how educational goals are assessed.

"We have not yet seen the pinnacle of these machines; the possibilities are endless," he added.

Following this, Dr. Rolly Donato from Southville International School and Colleges/Southville Global Education Network noted how the university's current goal of understanding AI integration into ethical practices in education is 'one big step for the institution' during his session "Empowering Educators: An Intro to AI Tools, Techniques, and Ethical Considerations."

"We are preparing students for the future, and the future is AI," he said.

Dr. Donato is a known champion of using AI in the academic field. He contributed his experience to forming general guidelines on AI integration in education for the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU).

𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬

In light of the university's aim to integrate AI tools in the research process, the university's Vice President for Planning, Research, and Extension, Dr. Zandra Maningas, focused her session on "Institutional Guidelines on the Use of AI in Research," where she briefed the participants on the university's policies regarding the involvement of AI tools in research, ensuring that they could act accordingly and confidently within the set guidelines.

Furthermore, the next speaker, Asst. Prof. Ria Valerie D. Cabanes from the University of the Philippines Open University, shared her knowledge on upholding research integrity in the context of AI-driven research during her session titled "Nurturing Research Integrity for Ethical Excellence: Best Practices and Strategies," further reminding participants of the ethical limitations of using AI in the field of research.

The final session of the seminar, "A Beginner's Guide to Patent Search for Research Educators," offered essential strategies and tools for conducting patent searches tailored to research coordinators, advisers, deans, and department chairs. Ms. Brianne Nicole Sanchez from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines was the speaker for this session.

With the seminar's conclusion and its focus on AI, this academic year marks a pivotal moment in the university's journey toward embracing AI technologies responsibly and effectively. The seminar highlights the University of Cabuyao's goal of being at the forefront of educational innovation and research excellence.

The University of Cabuyao-Pamantasan ng Cabuyao (UC-PnC) successfully launched face-to-face (F2F) classes for the Academic Year 2024-2025 yesterday, August 14.

Programs from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Business, Accountancy, and Administration (CBAA), College of Computing Studies (CCS), College of Education (COED), College of Engineering (COE), and College of Health and Allied Sciences (CHAS) eagerly joined in the return to campus life, marking the beginning of a new academic journey. Additionally, the highly anticipated Bagong Cabuyao Hall (B*H) building, which was inaugurated on August 4, opened its doors to faculty and students on the first day of the semester.

Students from different colleges roamed the new facility, admiring its fresh look. “The new building is spacious and aesthetically pleasing,” said Althea Joy Cabrillos, a student from the COE.

While some amenities in the new building are still being finalized, students are looking forward to the full experience. “I’m excited for the elevator to become operational soon, as it will benefit both faculty and students,” shared a CBAA student.

The B*H building is expected to enhance students' academic experience in the coming months, with many expressing high expectations for the new infrastructure. A student from CBAA shared that improvements to the new building are anticipated for a more positive learning environment.

“There are a few minor challenges, such as external noise and room temperature, but I’m confident that these will be addressed as the building becomes fully functional,” another CBAA student remarked during an interview.

It was recalled that the initiation of the five-story building construction within the university last year was a key component of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing campus facilities to meet the evolving needs of the student body. This project reflects UC-PnC’s ongoing commitment to delivering quality education and fostering a conducive academic environment.

As the new academic year unfolds, both students and faculty are optimistic about the opportunities that the B*H building and the return to face-to-face learning will bring.

𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐒 | Power to Precision: Carlos Yulo's Historic Performance in the Men's Floor Gymnastics and Vault Finals Boosts the Philippines to the Paris Olympic Championship with Two Gold Medals

PARIS, France - In an impressive display of accuracy and physical prowess, Carlos Yulo demonstrated his skills on the global platform, winning two gold medals for the Philippines. Every motion displayed a perfect balance of strength and grace, with each flip and turn executed flawlessly. His nearly perfect performance ensured there were no mistakes, confirming his status as the country's first-ever double Olympic gold medalist in the Men's Artistic Gymnastics Floor and Vault event finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, held on August 3-4.

Having recovered from his challenges at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, 24-year-old Yulo impressed the audience with his performance in Paris. Yulo performed his floor gymnastics routine precisely, competing third out of eight gymnasts. His powerful strides made it seem like he was effortlessly gliding across the mat. Despite his dominant performance, Yulo faced the stress of observing his competitors as they each tried to surpass him on the leaderboard.

Even after delivering a nearly flawless routine, the world champion knew the competition was far from over. The atmosphere in the arena was tense as he observed his competitors step onto the floor, aware that his position was at risk from other gymnasts. One of them was Artem Dolgopyat from Israel, a former world champion competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics floor exercise final.

Despite the high level of difficulty, Yulo demonstrated remarkable technical skill and creativity, receiving a difficulty score of 6.600 in the competition, indicating the intricacy of his performance. Yulo received an ex*****on score of 8.400, earning a combined score of 15.000.

Dolgopyat had to settle for silver once again, scoring 14.966. Despite his impressive performance and routine showcasing his considerable skill, the elusive Olympic gold remained just out of reach for the seasoned gymnast.

Standing atop the podium, Yulo embraced the moment with palpable emotion. A broad smile spread across his face. "I dedicate this to the Filipinos who supported me. I'm really grateful to them. I want to say thank you for watching and praying for me throughout the competition" Yulo said.

As he savored his victory and solidified his status as a top contender in men's floor gymnastics, Yulo warmed up every corner of the stadium again after winning the second gold medal in the Vault Event Finals.

Yulo dazzled the crowd with his precision and power in the vault finals, executing a stunning first vault that earned him a score of 15.433. His second vault scored 14.800, culminating in a total that decisively secured his gold medal.

This triumphant performance was not only a personal victory but also a historic moment, as Yulo made a remarkable comeback from a fourth-place finish in the same event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

ICYMI

With the commencement of classes across public schools in the nation on July 29, the university extended its services to local public schools by participating in this year’s Brigada Eskwela. The university assisted 19 schools in their Brigada Eskwela programs, thereby demonstrating its commitment to community service.

The program, led by the university’s Community Extension Services Department (CESD), was conducted from July 22 to 27, 2024. The student governments of the six university departments, in collaboration with various academic organizations, actively participated in this initiative.

The pictures shown below were taken during the brigada initiatives at San Isidro Elementary School, Pulo Elementary School, Pulo National High School, and North Marinig Elementary School.

PBBM in his 3rd SONA:
POGOs, Food Prices, WPS take center stage

On July 22, 2023, at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. delivered his third State of the Nation Address (SONA).

In his speech, the President detailed the actions taken by the government, the policies implemented, and the promises made to the Filipino people in his second year as President of the Philippines.

In the days following SONA, the nation's attention turned to addressing pressing issues facing the current administration. These issues include the operation of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), the rising cost of basic food commodities, the escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea, and various other sectoral challenges in education, economics, and beyond.

Check each panel for an in-depth look from our writers on the current state of the nation.
