CHED appoints COEd Faculty as Member of the Panel for Technical, Vocational and Alternative Education

Dr. Marilyn M. Soliman, a faculty member of the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) College of Education, has been officially appointed as a member of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Technical Panel for Technical, Vocational, and Alternative Education. This appointment is effective from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2028. Dr. Soliman's responsibilities include monitoring, aligning, and evaluating educational programs to ensure that they meet industry standards and the needs of Filipino students.

In an interview, Dr. Soliman pointed out one of the key challenges in the Technical-Vocational (TechVoc) program, the lack of alignment between the curriculum and the practical skills needed in the industry. She mentioned that one of the major issues is that studentsโ€™ skills do not align with the current curriculum, something she plans to address in her new role. Dr. Soliman plans to review the curriculum thoroughly to ensure that the skills, knowledge, and practices students gain in college are directly relevant to their future careers. Additionally, she aims to assess the connection between the curriculum and the requirements for licensure exams, especially for programs like BSIE (Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education) and BTLED (Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education). She emphasized that for students to perform better in board exams, there needs to be alignment in the curriculum, which she hopes will lead to improved outcomes for students in their professional journeys.

"In the industry, there are materials that we do not have in the academe; this is why we must fill this gap in order for the students to know how to deal with the materials outside the educational setting." Dr. Soliman also stated the importance of bridging the gap between academic learning and industry needs. She expressed the necessity of ensuring that students acquire the skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to their fields. She explained that there are often materials and technologies used in industries that are not available in academic settings, which can hinder studentsโ€™ preparedness for the workplace. Addressing these gaps will ensure that students are better equipped to succeed in their careers.

As part of her role, Dr. Soliman will visit universities and colleges across the Philippines to monitor and assess the implementation of CHEDโ€™s policies. Her focus will be to ensure that TechVoc programs remain aligned with industry needs and continue to address modern challenges.

With her role, Dr. Soliman aims to play a key role in making these programs more relevant and closely connected to the job market, helping students be better prepared for the industry.

The event, themed โ€œShaping Minds, Cultivating Educators: Paving the Way to Knowledge with Passion and Dedication,โ€ took place on January 23, 2025, at the Mini Convention Center on the Sumacab Campus of Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) in Cabanatuan City. Dr. Loreen P. Agulan, served as the Master of Ceremony, ensuring a smooth flow of the event and recognizing each significant moment. As Dr. Peria welcomed the candidates, enthusiastic applause echoed through the venue, highlighting the internsโ€™ dedication to educational excellence.

A particularly memorable aspect of the ceremony was the pinning of the 239 teacher interns. Each intern received a pin symbolizing their transition from students to teacher interns, surrounded by their supportive families. This significant moment was further enriched by shared Bible verses and a candle-lighting ceremony led by Dr. Luijim S. Jose fostering a deep sense of community and spirituality.

Rheycee Cyrell A. Agapito, President of the Teacher Interns Club, expressed heartfelt gratitude to NEUST for its unwavering support throughout their journey as aspiring educators. The interns honored their parents' sacrifices with a specially arranged batch song, creating an emotional highlight of the event.

To formally affirm their dedication to the teaching profession, intern representatives Joselle Ann C. Sumera and John Mark V. Del Carmen recited the Student Teachers' Creed and the Student Teacherโ€™s Pledge, vowing to positively impact future students.

Dr. Lea D.C. Veloso, Head of the COED Experiential Learning Program, concluded the ceremony with closing remarks, thanking everyone for their contributions and emphasizing the importance of ongoing growth among educators. The event culminated with attendees singing the NEUST Hymn, symbolizing the unity and shared purpose of the future educators.

Before finally ending the program, Dr. Peria announced and recognized the students from the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) and Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) programs who ranked in the top five of their diagnostic examinations from the previous semester. This acknowledgment celebrates their outstanding academic achievements and serves to inspire others within the educational community to pursue excellence in their studies.

This yearโ€™s pinning and send off ceremony is a success with the support and guidance from all faculty members who will teach the internship subject course headed by Dr. Lea DC Veloso and Dr. Christopher R. Vergara as chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively.

This Pinning and Send-off Ceremony not only celebrated the achievements of the COED interns but also reinforced NEUSTโ€™s commitment to nurturing dedicated and passionate educators prepared to make a meaningful impact in the education field.
