JOIN US IN OUR FUNDRAISER FOR TATAY MOY

Recently, The Industrial Wheel, the official tertiary student organization of the Student Publications Office, had the privilege of participating in the RTSPC 2024 at Baybay City, where we bagged 24 out of 29 awards and was hailed as 2nd Best Campus Press of the Year. Our Documentary Film entry, entitled โ€˜Bugsayโ€™, won 3rd Runner Up in the Group Video Category.

In the production of our documentary film, we had the opportunity to be able to connect with Nestorio Arpon, fondly known as 'Tatay Moy,' a ferryman based in Brgy. Malpag, San Miguel. โ€˜Tatay Moyโ€™ is a person with disability (PWD) who uses his boat paddle as a crutch. Additionally, he has been estranged from his family for years. Despite this, he has become an important member of his community, providing essential transportation services in the estuary of Brgy. Malpag for years.

Moved by Tatay Moy's story and the outpouring of sympathy and support from the public, we at The Industrial Wheel, in partnership with JCI Tacloban Kankabatok, have decided to take action. We are launching a donation drive to support Tatay Moy and gather whatever help we can for the repair of his boat, which serves as his livelihood and means of sustenance.

Cash assistance and in-kind donations will be received by the organization through its proper channels, either through donating to the affiliated financial accounts through Landbank and Gcash, or donation of preloved clothing, food, and other supplies through a donation bank in the university.

Donations for the repair and the upgrade of his banca are also welcome, whether donors would choose to donate cash for the procurement of materials or donate the material itself already. Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in โ€˜Tatay Moy'sโ€™ life and enable him to continue his invaluable service to the community.

For transparency and accountability, we will regularly update our page, The Industrial Wheel, every day at 5 PM, detailing the donations received and the donors who generously shared their resources, as well as detailing how they are being utilized. We believe in maintaining utmost transparency to ensure that every donation is utilized for its intended purpose as well as show to the community that their donations are making a difference.

Your support and generosity will not only help โ€˜Tatay Moyโ€™ but also serve as a testament to the power of collective action and compassion within our community. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.

Donations are open until April 30, 2024, Tuesday.

The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and the Committee on University Student Organizations and Activities (CUSOA) released Resolution No. 5, Series of 2024, denying the โ€œPetition for the Mandatory Injunctionโ€ filed by Hanz Kennard Ramilla against The Pillar, resolved on April 12, 2024.

The resolution wrote that if the OSA, for the sake of argument, has jurisdiction over The Pillar, "the petition failed to provide sufficient evidence on its claim" that the post relative to the petition for disqualification impedes the decision of the CUSOA.

The resolution further stipulates that "the OSA is devoid [of] the authority to control the publications of The Pillar, as an autonomous student institution", hence stating that the injunction to the publication is beyond the jurisdiction of the said office.

The OSA and the CUSOA remained anchored on their authority to regulate but not interfere with or hamper the publication's practice of free press, pursuant to Article III, Section 4, of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. ยถ
