[OPINION] We Reap What Our Purple-Stained Fingers Will Sow

Being trapped into an endless cycle of oscillations between trapos, elite puppets, and outright fascists has been the history of our nation thus far. Four days from now, the day of reckoning will once again come for all of us. On May 9, our purple-stained fingers will imprint themselves on the history of our nation—changing its course according to the people’s will. Whether it changes its course for better or for worse relies on our democratic right and responsibility to choose the best leaders who will lead our nation for the next couple of years.

With the day of Elections looming closer, the pressure to select the best among the rest becomes increasingly heavier. After all, what the elders sow now will be reaped by us sooner or later. The decisions made by the leaders we choose will accrue on our palms, and years or decades from now, it will bear its weight upon us and compel us to move as the next generation of leaders. With questionable individuals leading present-day surveys and polls, now more than ever, it becomes our critical obligation to contemplate the meaning of responsible voting, and think about the ways through which we can apply this in the upcoming elections.

First and foremost, it is important for the youth of today to set aside the rabid regionalism of old, and instead align with the leaders who will uphold our national interests. Let us ask the important questions and seek the most essential of answers: Which leaders care for the interests of the youth, such as education and job security? Which leaders will prioritize the agriculture sector and aim for genuine land reform? Which leaders have expressed their will to strengthen national industries and decrease reliance on imports? Which leaders will prioritize an independent foreign policy, and not let the nation be swayed by global superpowers? Which leaders care for national minorities, such as indigenous groups, women, and the LGBTQIA+? Which leaders care for the working class who comprise the main foundation of our country? Questions such as these should be the premise of our choices for future leaders, and not shallow standards like geographical proximity or strongman tendencies.

Of course, the leaders we choose should also possess a clean and consistent track record. That is, they should not have any blots of thievery, corruption, and any other forms of unlawfulness in their persona. They should have extensive experience when it comes to serving the country’s people, and that standard definitely does not include career politicians from political dynasties, wealthy businessmen who want to preserve their status, or celebrities who have too much time on their hands. Unfortunately, elections can be a hotbed for the circus tactics of these powerful people trying to serve their own selfish interests, so as the youth does best, let us wield the potential of researching and choose the leaders with the best credentials and platforms—and not yield to the glaring temptation of popularity and name recall.

As a final note, it is well and good to become invested in the elections, but it is also essential to understand that elections are just another avenue through which we can change our nation. Because let’s face the heinous truth—those who will garner seats this May 9 will most likely be those who possess a great deal of money and machinery, and rarely will competent leaders get their chance to serve. Thus, it is important to note that the struggle for genuine progress and democracy goes beyond the ballots we shade on May 9. The fight does not end after we have casted our votes and painted our fingers purple. There are fights to be won through the streets, through our communities, through discussions, through movements, through protests, and fundamentally through our will to fight for change.

Let us reiterate our role as youth in the upcoming elections. As the future torch-bearers of our nation, we have an indispensable obligation to make sure that the leaders we select will uphold our national interests and pave the way for genuine change. We can not afford to stall in our decisions or lower our standards because eventually, we will be the ones to suffer when it’s our turn to lead. In the end, our generation will look back and realize how high the political stakes were during this critical time, and how they failed or succeeded to turn the tides by the power they contributed. Ultimately, it is important to vote responsibly today, for the future will belong to us someday. The question then remains: to whom will you entrust the power of your purple-stained finger?

OPINION | A Systemic Overhaul Towards Climate Justice

Delete emails. Use Ecosia for browsing. Buy these metal straws. Reduce meat consumption. Say no to single-use plastics.

Since time immemorial, individual actions such as these have served as the paradigm of the great undertaking of the fight against climate change. These pledges are all very noble indeed—accessible and practical solutions vowed to be undertaken by the youth to do their part in securing their future.

But while individual accountability matters, it barely scratches the surface of the grander scheme of the persisting climate crisis. The preoccupation with the individual's lifestyle limits us to the confines of liberalism, preventing us from demanding the more radical and lasting changes that we need to implement to secure our planet's future.

The present economic model of the world is characterized by profit. As such, it is maintained through excessive consumption, overproduction, and ultimately, greed. Corporations will naturally veer into ventures that will award them the most gains, and will exploit it even at the expense of our planet.

Take for example the number one source of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere—fossil fuels. Burning coal and natural gas are favoured against the utilization of sustainable sources of energy such as wind and solar power because they are cheaper—they are easier to extract, store, and transport. There is little initiative from behemoth energy corporations to switch to safer sources of energy, because there are more costs and lesser profits in such businesses. Such is the system that allows the Earth to choke on greenhouse gases, perhaps until it has finally exhausted its supply of these non-renewable fossil fuels.

Deforestation as the second main source of greenhouse gases is also a global occurrence largely driven by the biggest corporations' desire for profit. The palm oil industry in the island of Borneo in Indonesia is responsible for 39% of forest cover loss since 2000, displacing indigenous minorities in the process.

In the country, deforestation was brought about by colonial rule and later by crony capitalism. It began with the Spaniards when they cut hardwoods from the forests to build the ships for the Manila galleon trade and other colonial activities, but it was during the rule of Americans when our forests had suffered greater heights of dwindling through the establishment of the Bureau of Forestry. The bureau was anything but a safe haven for forests; it was the source of the systematization of long-term logging and timber concessions that mostly benefited the American empire, instead of serving the national interests of the Filipino people. During the era of martial law, the logging industry further clawed the country's balding forests through the concession of lands, forest resources, and Timber License Agreements or TLAs to Marcos cronies, in a collusion called crony capitalism. But even after the 1986 revolution, no radical step was taken to reforest our lands and mountains.

With such large scales driving climate change, what the problem at hand demands as a solution is a total overhauling of the system that prioritizes profit over human rights, and essentially the health of the planet. As coined by Chico Mendes, “environmentalism without class struggle is just gardening”. Environmental awareness should encompass the consciousness that we could not reconcile our long-term goals for climate justice with the world's growing imperialism and capitalism, both of which only serve to pillage the resources of the Global South.

The youth then, should tackle climate justice not just through individual actions, but also through participating in collective struggle towards a more equal, free, and just society. Practice the steps you can do to reduce your own carbon footprint, but pair it with demands for systemic change. Support the indigenous people of the world. Protest against the harmful environmental practices of corporations, just as how climate scientists protested against Shell. The power to change the future of our planet lies in our hands, and there is no better time to use that power than now.

OPINION | CLIMATE CRISIS: A CALL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION

Our mother Earth needs us now. The global average surface temperature has increased over the 20th century by about 0.6°C. Our scientists and environmentalists never failed to warn us about the consequences of global warming and rapid climate change ever since. Protesting scientists are being arrested and Greta Thunberg among other environmental activists are being hushed, yet we are still at ease.

Time is our greatest enemy. So, we must act now before we experience catastrophe. Until then we realize how we, as inhabitants of Earth, have taken it for granted. Never allow ignorance to hinder you from saving Earth!

What must be done to help save Earth in our simple ways?

• Be sustainable
• STOP USING FOSSIL FUELS.
• Plant trees.
• Reduce paper usage.
• Reduce the use of Chlorofluorocarbons.
• Reduce single-use plastics, use eco-bag.
• Conserve water and energy.
• Practice proper waste disposal and management.
• Eat less meat.
• Delete unwanted or unnecessary emails.
• Use the search engine "Ecosia" (https://www.ecosia.org/?c=en) instead of Google Search. For every search, they will plant a tree.
• SPREAD ENVIRONMENTAL and ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS!

The strong typhoons and other natural disasters in our country like the one that Leyte experiences presently are the wake up calls. Other countries have already experienced the horrors of rapid climate change as well. All life forms are threatened by mass extinction. Never disregard the warnings of the scientists and those who dedicated their life to be well-educated of our environment and planet. We only have a few years to save our planet, we must start early. Do everything to not further contribute to any types of pollution!

Do your part. Together, we can save the Earth. Let the Earth Breathe!

The 2022 National Women’s Month Celebration (NWMC) endeavors to highlight the gains achieved for women and girls, assess actions towards gender equality and look forward to steps that must be taken to ensure progress in empowering women. With the country still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic, studies and data show that the health crisis stalled movements towards gender equality, worsening inequalities, further exposing gender gaps, and exacerbating vulnerabilities in social and political, and economic aspects.

Another laurel to our beloved DEGMNHS, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔. This achievement will not be possible without the spirit of unity, collaboration, voluntarism and synergy of the school administrators, teachers, learners, parents or guardians, alumni, donors, the community, local government unit, private and public sectors, and other stakeholders.

Despite the challenges of this pandemic, the school still enthusiastically engaged in the different activities that manifest this year’s theme, 𝘽𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙖 𝙋𝙖𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣. Truly, as Filipinos, we exhibited the spirit of bayanihan in making our school a safe & conducive place for learners, parents, teachers, and other visitors.

October 7, 2021— Dr. Myrna U. Ligas, the former principal of Don Eulogio de Guzman Memorial National High School (DEGMNHS) files a Certificate of Candidacy (COC) to run as Bauang's councilor.

As an advocate for peace and education, Dr. Ligas from Cabisilan, Bauang, La Union served in the Department of Education (DepEd) for forty-one years straight. She worked nineteen years as a classroom teacher and later became a principal in the various high schools of La Union. From 2017 to 2021, Dr. Ligas then became the principal of DEGMNHS.

Not long before she decided to run, she retired from the noble service in July 19, 2021. However, her heart stays for students, teachers, women of Bauang, members of LGBTQIA+, and the poor. To be a public servant is really her passion.

"You can't help anyone, but you can help someone," she said in Bombo Radio, La Union interview.

She then further reiterates her goals and purpose which is to help and share whatever she has especially to the youth. Helping the youngsters to pursue studying no matter if they are poor or underprivileged is her thing. Empathy for teachers as she also became one is evident as she speaks for truth. She seeks to see a bright future for LGBTQIA+ members as she plans to coordinate with TESDA in giving life learning skills. Aiming for a progressive Bauang, she also aims to provide work for impoverished and marginalized people.

Dr. Ligas' advocacies as an aspirant town's councilor is not limited in school or education itself, but for the whole community especially in these crucial times of pandemic.

"We have many good people in Bauang. I hope they will give me a chance to help the poor. I genuinely wish for an honest and clean election," she added in the said interview.

Certainly, every teacher has a story to tell. Once a teacher, always a teacher. The passion and grit to share, never vanish in their hearts. Service for all, it is for Dr. Myrna U. Ligas.
