HISTORY OF DZPA CMN PUSO TI ABRA

ABRA - An isolated, developing diocese, cut off by mountains and rivers, has an ambitious rural and social development program under the auspices of the church. There was no radio station in Abra - nor, for that matter, any means of communication out of the center of the province. Odillo Etspueler, SVD, DD and some of the confreres saw radio as a way, not only to

cross over mountains and rivers, but also to bridge the gap between the two cultures in Abra, the ilocano and Tinguian cultures. Thus, radio station DZPA - AM, the "Heart of Abra" was born in 1960s. It was formally inaugurated in February 1970. DZPA continues to pump new life throughout Abra. DZPA - AM was established a commercial enterprise. It was hoped that the broadcast apostolate of diocese would be supported by selling airtime to advertisers. In the mind of the missionaries, it would be a method of evangelization and instruction in the faith.
