EDSA People Power Revolution: A Peaceful Fight for Democracy

Today, we commemorate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, a historic event in the Philippines that took place from February 22 to 25, 1986. It was a peaceful uprising that led to the downfall of President Ferdinand Marcos, ending his 20-year dictatorship. The movement was fueled by widespread discontent over corruption, human rights abuses, and election fraud.

Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos gathered on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Metro Manila, united in their demand for change. Religious leaders, political figures, and even the military joined the protesters, defying Marcos orders and standing in solidarity with the people.

The EDSA People Power Revolution, remains a powerful symbol of how ordinary people can bring about change through collective action. As we mark its 39th anniversary, we remember the courage and solidarity of those who stood up for freedom and justice, reaffirming our commitment to safeguarding democracy for future generations.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and love is in the air!

But have you ever wondered how this holiday came to be? It's not just about flowers, chocolates, and romantic getaways. The history of Valentine's Day is enchanting.

The origins of Valentine's Day are wrapped in mystery, but historians believe it may have started as a pagan festival called Lupercalia. This ancient Roman celebration honored fertility and involved rituals like sacrificing animals and running naked through the streets.

As Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire, the early Christian church tried to eliminate Lupercalia. Instead, they established February 14th as a day to honor Saint Valentine, a martyr who defied Emperor Claudius II's ban on marriage.

But how did Valentine's Day become associated with romance and love? Some credit the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer, who wrote about the link between Valentine's Day and courtly love in his poem "The Parlement of Foules". Others argue that the tradition of exchanging love letters and gifts on Valentine's Day originated in the Middle Ages.

Fast-forward to the present, and Valentine's Day has become a global celebration of love and affection. Couples shower each other with gifts, romantic dinners and sweet gestures.

Whether you're single, in a relationship, or just looking for a reason to celebrate love, Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse. So go ahead, spread love and make this February 14th one to remember.
