EAMIGAS Publication

EAMIGAS Publication Eamigas is Aklan State University's most followed organization. Founded in 1955. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’› 'Eamigas' is an Aklanon term which means โ€œgrains or seedsโ€.

To the farmers, โ€œeamigasโ€ are even more valuable than gold. Without them, nothing of value can even be produced to feed a growing population. Just like the grains, the publication grows and is serving Aklan State University-Main Campus for more than 66 years. The Eamigas started its shift to digitalization in 2019 as our goal is to take further advantage of the digitally fueled era. Now, it is the

The publication maintains its online web presence, published news, articles, and graphic content weekly, to update its academic community like never before. It has been recognized and produced award-winning journalists in the Region over the past decades. The EAMIGAS also won awards in the prestigious College Press Conference organized by the Philippine Information Agency โ€“ VI annually. We even pushed our growing capabilities to redefine our generation. We've taken a huge leap to introduce a new breakthrough in the publication taking further our studentry to a more immersive and dynamic platform โ€” telling them stories through their gadgets with the most powerful digital publishing tool. Eamigas, now on ISSUU for the very first time. Amidst a media environment besets with constant state of flux and constraints, the Eamigas is committed to remain the beacon of news and information, delivering responsible journalism to ASUians and the community. Pasukan na naman, mga sis!
Kailangan nanaman natin ng essential survival kit ๐Ÿคช

๐—ข๐—ฃ๐—œ๐—ก๐—œ๐—ข๐—ก: Free Education For All: A Hoax?
by Jayben Mationg

As a dreamer who came from a humble background, availing myself of the privilege of being educated in a state university where there's no tuition fee is probably one of the biggest opportunities Iโ€™ve ever had.

However, the philanthropist in me canโ€™t resist turning blind to the fact that many students, who are far more underprivileged than I am and the ones who need it the most, didn't pass the admission test, while those who have a Toyota Vios screeching through the school's avenue did.

It would not be right to say that these elite students are incapable of performing well in academics; rather, it might be the exact oppositeโ€”that they have actually aced the admission test compared to the underprivileged. However, this issue in many state universities in our country defeats the principle of free education, which is supposed to prioritize students who are academically able and, most importantly, who come from poor families.

Indeed, by law, either students from different social classesโ€”bourgeoisie or proletariatโ€”can legally avail themselves of RA 10931, which is otherwise known as the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, if theyโ€™re capable of passing the admission criteria. But isnโ€™t it unfair for someone with two slices of cake to take a share from someone who only has one slice?

The study of political science and economics tells us that the cardinal flaw of capitalism is the uneven distribution of wealth, thereby leading to economic disparities and social stratification. The rich become richer, and the poor become poorer. But on the positive side, this flaw can be mitigated through poverty alleviation by pushing forth positive inequality or affirmative actionsโ€”programs prioritizing the poor. The Free Education Act should act as a manifestation of this principle until it falls short.

State universities have begun to be swarmed by the elites, sometimes even by students whose parents are big businessmen and politicians taking advantage of such a plot hole. Some may argue that this move is permissible, but in my defense, we must sometimes look beyond legality and consider the moral aspect. It's about being aware of what you have a right to do and what is right to do.

In the recent data released by UP, it was estimated that almost half (44%) of the 10,000 passers out of 100,000 applicants for the UPCAT (University of the Philippines College Admission Test) came from private schools. Meanwhile, 27% were from science high schools, and only 29% were from public schools. These statistics voice out that the system indirectly favors the elite, as itโ€™s apparent from any angle that wealthy students have an edge in passing the admission test since they can easily afford review centers and private tutoring services.

Now, to address this problem pragmatically, the state university's admission criteria must not solely focus on meritocracy but must also include the financial background of the applicants to determine whether they deserve to avail themselves of free tuition. I agree that the quality of the students must also be put into consideration, but the system and policy must never be anti-poor; instead, it should prioritize those in need.

As far as I can attest, education is the strongest arsenal to challenge one's destiny. No one can decide where they come from, but education can always lead them where to go. Hence, I speak for the next Shakespeare, Einstein, Descartes, and other dreamers who are currently living in the hay sacks that could change the landscape of this country and world foreverโ€”if only theyโ€™re given a spot in the universities where the bourgeoisie currently dominates in number.

Today, we live in a country with one of the highest rates of income inequality in all of Asia, and this issue can only be overcome when we allow the marginalized to take the spotlight. The elites have ruled this country since before and after it gained independence, and now is the time to alter the course of history by giving more opportunities and privileges to those whose dreams remain unfulfilled due to their socio-economic status.

Equality becomes evil when the situation demands equity, and itโ€™s fair to be unfair if such unfairness favors the impoverished.

ASU-Banga freshmen filled the amphitheater as they attended the Student Convocation and General Orientation for the academic year 2024-2025 with the theme "Beyond Boundaries: Exploring New Horizons" on Tuesday, August 13.

The event began with a Holy Mass by Rev. Fr. John Ian M. Tolentino, Parish Team Member, together with the assistance of the ASU Kadayawan Chorale.

Furthermore, Mr. Lorenz Dominic Lao, MBA, convocational speaker, shared the key to surviving college life, highlighting the importance of acknowledging one's emotions.

"What you feel is not what others feel. No one can invalidate your emotions. You should embrace them. Turn your negative emotion into a positive one." said Lao.

Afterwards, Dr. Jeffrey A. Clarin, SUC President III, passionately shared a message, urging freshmen to dream big and strive for the best.

The rest of the afternoon covered the presentation of the University Officials of Banga Campus, University Student Council officers, and the acknowledgement of Office Personnel per Unit.

To conclude the program, selected students from College of Teacher Education (CTE) performed an intermission number followed by the singing of the ASU hymn.

Malay-Boracay Bridge is now under negotiation as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) approves its inclusion in their 2025 budget, August 10.

The bridge was proposed by the San Miguel Holding Corporation (SMHC), with an approximate cost of PHP 5 billion.

Meanwhile, the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project under the DPWH and SMHC proposed a budget of PHP 4.6 billion for their 2025 projects; one being the Malay-Boracay bridge.

The DPWH claims that the project will boost the environmental carrying capacity, provide all-weather access for vehicles and pedestrians, and relieve Boracay's arising infrastructure pressures.

However, the bridge draws suspicion among the majority of the businessmen in Boracay as they doubt the maintenance and operation of the bridge once it is done.

Dindo Salazar, chairman of Boracay Foundation Inc., said in an interview with GMA DYRU Kalibo that the root of the doubt comes from the least satisfactory and minimal improvements at Godofredo Ramos Airport; also managed by SMHC.

In response to the damage brought by El Niรฑo in the provinces of Western Visayas, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VI released up to Php 207 million in assistance, August 8.

During the month of May, the entirety of Western Visayas experienced a meteorological drought; this was due to a lack of rainfall and the El Niรฑo phenomenon.

According to the Disaster Response Operations Management, Information, and Communication (DROMIC), the extreme drought impacted the regionโ€™s 128 municipalities, which led to a total of 555,385 families across 3,190 barangays in the region.

In response, DSWD-VI has released assistance to the affected families.

Provinces received varying amounts of distributed aid, with Iloilo receiving P59.9 million; Negros Occidental with P50.9 million; Antique with P46.9 million; Capiz with P18.5 million; Aklan with P14.7 million; Guimaras with P11.9 million; and Bacolod City receiving the least amount with P4 million.

Moreover, the local government units (LGUs) also disbursed an amount of P30.8 million in their own resources to support the affected residents in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, netizens online question the allocation of the PHP 207 million as they expressed dismay over received food packs containing merely a few kilograms of rice and goods; while others received none.

"Naapektuhan kami ng El Niรฑo ja sa Antique, wara kami it nabaton. (We were also affected by the El Niรฑo here in Antique, we haven't received anything)" a concerned netizen expressed.
