EAMIGAS Publication

EAMIGAS Publication Eamigas Publication is Aklan State University - Banga Campus' official student Publication since 1955 ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’› Eamigas, now on ISSUU for the very first time.

'Eamigas' is an Aklanon term which means โ€œgrains or seedsโ€. To the farmers, โ€œeamigasโ€ are even more valuable than gold. Without them, nothing of value can even be produced to feed a growing population. Just like the grains, the publication grows and is serving Aklan State University-Main Campus for more than 66 years. The Eamigas started its shift to digitalization in 2019 as our goal is to take f

urther advantage of the digitally fueled era. Now, it is the most followed account in the university with more than 18,000 followers across our social media platforms including a monthly post reached and engagements up to 250,000. The publication maintains its online web presence, published news, articles, and graphic content weekly, to update its academic community like never before. It has been recognized and produced award-winning journalists in the Region over the past decades. The EAMIGAS also won awards in the prestigious College Press Conference organized by the Philippine Information Agency โ€“ VI annually. We even pushed our growing capabilities to redefine our generation. We've taken a huge leap to introduce a new breakthrough in the publication taking further our studentry to a more immersive and dynamic platform โ€” telling them stories through their gadgets with the most powerful digital publishing tool. Amidst a media environment besets with constant state of flux and constraints, the Eamigas is committed to remain the beacon of news and information, delivering responsible journalism to ASUians and the community. In the age of proliferation of information, its new mission is to let today's generation be fully informed, updated, and involved.

This enrollment season, kamustahin natin ang status ng mga "ASUian Anik-aniks":

โœ”๏ธ 'The Hopeless' โ€“ clearance? Wala pa rin.
โœ”๏ธ 'The Out of Breath' โ€“ cardio sa Pili Avenue unlocked.
โœ”๏ธ 'The Impatient' โ€“ 3 minutes pa lang, galit na agad.

โœ”๏ธ 'The Spender' โ€“ enrollment lang, pero gala agad ang iniisip.

Literary | I'm fine, but can you please ask me twice?

"Are you okay?" - a simple question I always hear around, yet one I long to ask of myself. As only a few dared to ask it to the girl who flashes the brightest smile. But if you ever felt the need to ask me one time, and I just nodded and laughed. Can you please look me in the eyes and read the sign?

'Cause maybe then you'll see through those silly jokes and cheerful smiles is a girl dying to tell someone she's not really fine.

So here I stand waiting for that someone to ask me twice.

๐—ข๐—ฃ๐—œ๐—ก๐—œ๐—ข๐—ก: It's still vivid to me how my younger self was always excited whenever my mom brought me to the old Gaisano in Kalibo. It wasn't because I was looking forward to having a new toy truck or getting myself a Jolly Meal, but my excitement mainly stemmed from one place: the bookstore.

I'm in my 20s now, but it seems like I haven't changed a bit. If I were to get lost in the mall, it wouldn't be hard to find me โ€” I'd just be in the corner of the bookstore's shelf, browsing and hopelessly checking for the new release of Shakespeare's plays and Voltaire's manuscripts. But that might not be the case anymore. The only bookstore in Kalibo closed last year, and the top book chains in the country, National Bookstore and Fully Booked, have narrowed their branches nationwide. The decline in demand and sales of books is one of the factors to blame for this, which reflects the alarming issue of our era โ€” the gradual death of the reading culture.

According to Dr. Ambeth Ocampo, one of our countryโ€™s finest historians, Filipinos are reading less than before. The culture of readership in the Philippines has seen a sharp decline in just a few years. According to the National Book Development Board's (NBDB) Readership Survey, 80% of Filipinos read non-school books in 2017, but by 2023, only 42% still expressed an interest in reading books. This depressing decline is primarily caused by the advent of social media and entertainment โ€” a renaissance of the digital rise and a fall of literary value โ€” leading people to the verge of amusing themselves to death, with Filipinos spending nearly 9 hours daily with their heads fixated on their screens.

Philosophers have long been pessimistic about the fate of books and readership, and it's with a heavy heart that our generation is the manifestation of this prophecy. In fact, prior to the invention of the printing press by Gutenberg, books were perceived as more precious than gems, and the act of reading was inseparable from daily life. Paradoxically, despite the enormous quantity of books today, almost none of us dares to read anymore because no one forces us to do so, and we inadvertently divert our freedom into succumbing to tons of entertainment.

However, we should not bear all the blame ourselves; this is a systemic issue that could and should have been prevented through collective action from both the government and the people.

The building of community libraries has been mandated by Section 2 of Republic Act 7743, which clearly states: โ€œThe establishment of public libraries and reading centers shall be an integral part of the development plan of each local government unit, provided that barangays shall provide the site for barangay reading centers.โ€

This law aims to elevate the literacy of every Filipino and aims to put an end to illiteracy before the end of the century. But after nearly 40 years since this constitutional mandate was proclaimed, with sufficient budget provided, there has been a lack of executive will to build a library in every barangay where knowledge and history could have been preserved in the minds of, if not all, Filipinos and enhance readership. There was also no penalty imposed on those government officials who failed to implement this law.

But why doesn't this issue ring a bell for us? Why do we care less about things that affect us directly? Why do we have no contempt for ignorance, no passion for learning, no effort to understand who we really are by embracing a sense of history? How can we reignite our collective passion for learning?

In modern times, perhaps we don't have to resort to racial cleansing or war to destroy a culture and dismantle a nation. A lack of public libraries and an underfunded educational sector might do the work.

The reading culture is too vital to let it fade into oblivion. This is a cornerstone of our identity that we can't afford to lose. Hence, this is the best time for our government to allocate more resources toward education and learning spaces, rather than spending billions on subsidies, and for local officials to pass resolutions or ordinances that earmark funds for the construction and maintenance of public libraries.

This is the time for us, the people, to revive the culture of reading by organizing book clubs, literary guilds, and writing and reading events where we can share stories, hear the unheard, and contribute any reading culture in any way possible.

As Robin Williams immortalized in the film Dead Poets Society, "Words and ideas can change the world." Regardless of how archaic books may be in our times, we all belong to the human race, and we are meant to learn from one another through the stories and ideas we share. Weโ€™re not just here to suck the marrow out of life; we're here to live it, to feel it, to know who we are, and to contribute a verse.

There are many Filipinos out there who, like me, always imagined that paradise would be a kind of library. Libraries are a safe haven for Filipino dreamers and the most practical investment to alleviate our country from the depths of ruin.

Let's start building more of this paradise not just for ourselves, but also for our children and the generations to come. The future of our country largely depends on it.
