When I saw my name among the nominees for the Top 100 Filipinos to Follow on LinkedIn for 2024, I felt honored. Yesterday, I learned I ranked #55. That is a significant rise from #69 last year. This recognition means a lot to me.

This initiative, created by Virginia Bautista in 2018, isn't a competition. It's a celebration of Filipinos who inspire and educate on LinkedIn. It started with only 47 names, but the list has grown to 100, reflecting the community's strength.

LinkedIn may not be mainstream for many Filipinos, but with over 1 billion users worldwide, including 17.7 million Filipinos, being part of the Top 100 Filipinos to Follow on LinkedIn is a privilege.

It's a title to celebrate and a call to action—a challenge to continue inspiring, motivating, and helping others grow in their careers, businesses, and lives through this platform.

With this recognition, I feel motivated and inspired to be more intentional about what I share and how I engage with this incredible community.

I never thought I would build a business - but here I am.

When I started my business in the digital space, I had no background in digital marketing. My only real experience was in writing and research, which I honed in academia.

So, I signed up for free and paid courses and short-term training to understand the basics.

While many fellow trainees jumped to Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, I decided LinkedIn was the platform I wanted to explore.

At first, it was uncomfortable. LinkedIn seemed like a space for established professionals, and I felt out of place. But as I learned more, I became more confident in how to use it effectively.

It wasn’t a smooth process. Building your business and growing your network on LinkedIn takes intentionality and dedication.

There were setbacks, but I always found a way to get back on track.

For those of you looking to use LinkedIn for your business, my advice is simple:
📌 be consistent
📌 stay intentional and
📌 keep adding value.

It’s not quick or easy, but it’s worth it.

When we learn to let go, we make room for growth and better opportunities.

Being comfortable in what we do is important, but it can also hold us back from taking the steps needed to grow our business.

Recently, I had an experience that showed me the value of having systems in place, continuously staying open to new opportunities, and upskilling.

A friend reminded me that nothing in our line of business is certain, and ensuring sustainability is a must.

It allowed me to re-evaluate, reorganize, and move forward with renewed focus.

𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐝.

It took me months of thoughtful engagement—commenting on posts, sharing insights, and adding real value to conversations—before I landed my first project.

The truth? Success on LinkedIn is about more than making a post and waiting for opportunities to roll in. It's about showing up daily, engaging with others, and being consistent.

Here's what worked for me:

🗣️ Engage with purpose – Skip the "Congrats" or one-liners. Instead, leave insightful comments that show you've taken the time to read and understand the content.

🔄 Consistency – Meaningful engagement doesn't deliver results overnight. But if you show up regularly, you'll start building recognition and trust.

🎯 Engage with the right people – Focus your energy on interacting with posts from people in your target market. It helps you connect with those who matter most to your goals.

Engagement opens doors. Focus on adding value, not just visibility.

Make your comments count. Engage with purpose!

Ｍｉｓｔａｋｅｓｈａｐｐｅｎ，ａｎｄｔｈａｔ＇ｓｆｉｎｅ！

One time, I made an error in one of my lead generation tasks. It cost my client a new connection.

In my haste to send messages, I missed a previous response from the person stating they weren't interested, leading to a message that came across as pushy.

It ultimately led them to remove the connection with my client.

💚 Thankfully, my client understood, telling me to be more careful in the future. "This happens and is fine," he said, "just make sure it does not happen again."

I took responsibility and felt fortunate to work with someone so kind. Not every client would respond this way.

👉 Here's what I've learned from this experience I'd like to share:

🚀 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥.Rushing to finish tasks in these states often leads to more mistakes. While output is important, quality always outweighs quantity.

🚀 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐬—𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞. Trying to cram everything into one sitting, thinking you'll earn extra rest days, can lead to exhaustion and eye strain, increasing the chances of mistakes.

🚀 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭. If you're unable to meet a deadline or feel like your work won't meet their expectations, be upfront. You may fear appearing incompetent, but honest communication can strengthen your working relationship.

🚀 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐲. Without structure, you can feel like a burnt-out employee, overwhelmed by endless tasks and deadlines.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work as a lead generation specialist is my weekly meetings with my clients.

During these sessions, we review our past performance – we look into the details, checking what worked, what didn't, and how to move forward. 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐝𝐈𝐧'𝐬 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 (𝐒𝐒𝐈) is one tool we've come to rely on.

SSI seemed like just another number to track at first. But as we learned, we discovered how much insight it can offer. We worked on improving the four pillars that make up the SSI.

👉 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞'𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝:

We found that it's not just about having a well-crafted profile but regularly sharing content that reflects your expertise and value.

Your network can either amplify or drown out your voice. Through trial and error, we realized that targeting the right connections makes all the difference.

Building a relevant network opens up opportunities, not just followers.

🌱 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬
This pillar was a game-changer. It's not enough to just passively like or share content.

We worked on getting my clients more involved by commenting on relevant posts, offering thoughtful input, and asking questions that drive conversations.

Engaging with insights allows you to stay visible while showcasing your expertise meaningfully.

🌱 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬
Relationships go beyond connections. During our meetings, we noticed that the results were clear when my clients nurtured their network – by following up on milestones and initiating conversations.

⌛ ＷｈｙＭｏｎｉｔｏｒＹｏｕｒＳＳＩ？
Keeping track of SSI can be daunting, especially since LinkedIn's algorithm feels like a mystery.

While it's true that nobody can completely crack the algorithm, monitoring your SSI helps you understand which areas of your LinkedIn presence need attention.

It's not about obsessing over the numbers but about using them as a guide to ensure you're making the most of the platform.

Each pillar of the SSI shows how effectively you're using LinkedIn to connect with your audience.

For me and my clients, the SSI has become a tool that keeps us accountable. It's a way to measure our growth and adjust our strategies accordingly.

I read a post a few weeks ago that says sending follow-up messages after not receiving a response indicates a lack of interest from the recipient.

While this can sometimes be the case, it's not always clear-cut.

In my experience working as a lead generation specialist for my clients, many people don't regularly check their LinkedIn messages, especially if they aren't using tools like Sales Navigator. Some are more active on email, while others are busy and may miss a message.

By not sending follow-up messages, you could be missing out on valuable opportunities to connect, engage, and even close deals.

Here are a few things I do to make sure my follow-up messages are effective:

📌 I make sure my follow-up messages are personalized and add value to avoid sounding spammy.

📌 Instead of just pitching services, I might include an invitation to a free webinar or share a helpful document that could benefit the recipient's business or personal life.

📌 Additionally, I space out these follow-ups, usually with a 5-day interval between messages, to avoid overwhelming the recipient.

I recently registered AC LeadWrite Social Media Consultancy Services with the Department of Trade and Industry. Running a business with just me and my two older kids is challenging.

With limited resources, I knew there would be questions about my credibility and legitimacy. But I took the risk, and the first step was to take action. This DTI registration may be a small step, but it is a good start. As Lao Tzu said, "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩."

Fifteen years in academia helped me generate many ideas for a business that align with what I am good at and currently do. However, these ideas will only be helpful if I implement them. Nolan Bushnell aptly said, "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐫, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫."

Sometimes, I feel contented with where I am, but as someone my family depends on, I must do something. To provide all the support they need, I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone because, in the words of Neale Donald Walsch, "𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐞."

I recently attended a face-to-face event organized by the Department of Trade and Industry-Baguio. This event was the DiGicities Masterclass, a workshop by Gcash in collaboration with StartUp Village and USAID. The goal was to empower MSMEs with essential knowledge and skills in digitization and innovation.

This workshop aimed to enhance our business strategies and help us thrive in the digital age. One key takeaway is that businesses must keep up with the times regardless of size. As one of the speakers said, "Pivot or perish."

❌Ｗａｒｎｉｎｇ：Ｌｏｎｇｐｏｓｔａｈｅａｄ！❌

"𝑺𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒏. 𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝒃𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒌 𝒔𝒚𝒂 𝒔𝒂 𝒑𝒂𝒈𝒕𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒐."

I heard someone say I should have gone back to teaching instead of just tending to my plants. I find this funny, eye-opening, and challenging.

Leaving my 15-year teaching career was not an abrupt decision; it took me 3 years to decide. I ensured I had another income source while building my businesses.

😁 Here is what I want to say to address the speculations that I wasted my teaching career for an unstable and challenging journey.

📌 Huwag ninyo akong kaawaan dahil nagbebenta lang ako ng mga halaman at kung ano-ano online. Believe it or not, kahit hindi daily ang pagpasok ng sales, kahit one-man team ako na mukhang kargador sa pagdedeliver, masaya ako sa ginagawa ko.

📌 Porke hindi na ako nagdadamit ng blazer, dress, heels o uniform ay mukha na akong unemployed at kawawa. Yes, I'm struggling to keep my business afloat, but it does not mean I do not have enough to feed my family.

📌 Ang pag-alis ko sa teaching does not mean I wasted an opportunity. As one of my clients said, even if I am not in academia, what I do with them is a form of teaching because I guide them daily.

📌 My freelance business may not yet be a stable career or source of income, but I am happy with what I do. It challenges me to learn more, do research without too much stress, manage my time, manage my list of activities my way, and network with people from different walks of life in the comfort of my home.

😞 I don't want to return to an 8-5 job as much as possible.

My businesses may all be start-ups, but I am happy and more empowered to take control of my life. The challenges along the way do not make me regret my decisions.

So don't take pity on me just because I no longer wear corporate attire, stand on a podium or a stage, not addressed with the title 'Ma'am' for being a university instructor, dress up every day, but instead sell goods online, or live like a gardener or farmer.

😁 Hindi po ako nasasayangan na umalis ako bilang instructor sa unibersidad. Kaya wag din po kayo nasasayangan. Bagkus, suportahan na lang ninyo ako at mga kapwa ko na SME's.

On a side note, these assumptions about me made me realize that I should level up my services and find a deeper purpose for what I am doing other than earning. I do not negatively take those assumptions about what I do because I believe these things happen for a reason.

For me, it's a sign and a motivation to turn these ideas in my head into reality, to strip off this impostor syndrome I've been feeling for so long, and to put my all out there and brave the tides.

Today was the second-to-last day of the Mangan Taku Cordillera Food Fair 2024, and I decided to take my daughter along to check it out. Initially, I was hesitant because of the hot weather, but she was eager to go out, so I thought, "Why not?" I needed a break from the computer anyway and hoped to find some inspiration for my start-up writing business. Despite the scorching sun, we had a great time. I ran into a former colleague, had a lovely chat, and admired the unique offerings from each province in the Cordillera. If only Burnham Park had more trees; we really need more green spaces. It was a nice few hours out, but the hot weather put a damper on things. I reminisced about the days when Baguio still had a cool climate, even during the summer months. "Salasalamat san panang imbitar u ken sak-en!" It was indeed an honor being part of this event even if it was for a very short time. Visiting the college, meeting friends and familiar faces, sitting down and listening to the student's research presentation brought back some good memories. I thought I lost my touch with research but I'm glad I still have it. That feeling of being able to guide the students with their paper is something I have always let's say "enjoyed doing".
