The Karao are a distinct indigenous people group living in the foothills of Mt. Pulag in Bokod, Benguet.
The men traditionally wear a blackbands on their lower left legs to prevent snake bites. Karao ancestors are also said to have coexisted with snakes, thus explaining why snakes do not bite the Karao.
The Karao trace their origins to an ili somewhere in the eastern part of Bontoc, Mt. Province. They had left due to a deadly epidemic (banay a sahit) or natural catastrophe, made their way to the lost settlement of Panuypuy (somewhere between the Awa and Matunu rivers of present-day Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya), before finally making their way to Bokod.
Ibaloi oral history also records that this group from Panuypuy asked permission to live with them on their land. The Ibaloi elders and council decided that the migrants relocate near the foothills of Mt. Pulag.
When Americans divided the non-Christian groups of the Philippines, they counted the Karao as Ibaloi. While the Karao language may share similarities with that of the Ibaloi, they have unique distinctives too, such as in the hard use of the phoneme /ch/ that is present everywhere in Karao language.
They also carry community structures that they have in common with that of Bontok rather than the Ibaloi, such as the use of male and female dormitories where youth sleep until they are of age to marry.
The recognition of the Karao as a distinct IP group has allowed them to exercise the right to cultural integrity, as in the case of a Karao Orthography for mother tongue-based learning that did not meet the needs of their language.

TRIVIA β
The traditional attire of the Hanunuo Mangyan people features earthy tones and geometric patterns. For the men, I wear a bahag (loincloth), kamiseta (sleeveless shirt), with a head accesory made from woven fibers or rattan. While my partner, wears a woven duster (skirt) and kamiseta, with tapis and leglets, and adorned with bulak (beaded necklace). Our attire is complemented by traditional hats, woven bags, and accessories featuring leaves, flowers, and animal designs, showcasing the harmony with nature and rich cultural heritage of the Mangyans.
