Interesting techniques for breeding and developing pigeons: Opinion?

Long Distance vs. Marathon Racing Pigeons while both types are bred for endurance, there's a subtle but important distinction between long distance and marathon pigeons in the world of pigeon racing.

Crossing middle-distance pigeons with extreme long-distance pigeons is a fascinating strategy that many fanciers are exploring to create a more versatile and resilient racing bird. One of the best examples is the winner of International AGEN 2025, a Batenburg-Van de Merwe pigeon crossed with the Soontjens/Van Dyck, a classic middle-distance pigeon. This combination resulted in an international champion.

Breeding & Lineage:
Marathon pigeons often descend from elite long-distance bloodlines but are selectively bred for even greater stamina and resilience. Famous strains like the Jan Aarden line are known for producing top marathon performers.

Energy or Power for Long Distance Races:

For long-distance pigeon races, need to focus on energy rather than raw power. While pigeons need strength to fly long distances, they primarily rely on carbohydrates for quick energy and fats for sustained endurance.
