𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐂 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐖𝐋𝐒𝐇 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬

Philippine Science High School – Cordillera Administrative Region Campus (PSHS-CARC) welcomed eight students and staff from Wu-Ling Senior High School (WLSH) of Taiwan as they arrived for a four-day exchange program in Baguio City, Benguet.

The welcome ceremony included Dir. Edward C. Albaracin’s address, a display of Filipino culture by the Dang-dang Ay Chorale and Dance Troupe, as well as the introduction of each WLSH delegate, who performed their own cultural presentations symbolic of their Taiwanese heritage, including a song and a poem recital.

WLSH headmaster, Mr. Chang-Hsin Wan, expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome given by the campus.

Furthermore, WLSH teacher, Mr. Jia-Jiun Hu, introduced the school and gave a brief exposition on Taiwanese culture to the scholars.

After the welcoming program, the delegates visited the various Alternative Learning Activities (ALA) and student-led organizations of CARC.

The aim of the exchange program is to foster a friendship between the two institutions that transcends national barriers, in which the students and staff from both schools will be able to engage in both cultural and academic activities.

Before arriving at PSHS-CARC, the WLSH delegates also visited Philippine Science High School – Ilocos Region Campus (PSHS-IRC).

The exchange program is set to conclude on October 24, 2023.

PSHS-CARC scholar and Cordilleran Scholar journalist, Amanda Michelle M. Fababeir, won third in the search for the Ten Outstanding Young Journalists during the 3rd Ditto Sarmiento Journalism Cup. The award ceremony was held at the University of the Philippines - Diliman, October 13.

Amidst the bustling hallways and lively classrooms, where laughter and camaraderie are part of daily life, there are silent battles being fought by many—students who drown in the waters of mental health issues. These struggles are often invisible, but lie at the very heart of reshaping education.

In our relentless pursuit for progress, we have come to recognize that education encompasses more than just grades and textbooks. It extends deep understanding and care for the well-being of every student.

We've realized that education remains incomplete without acknowledging the unseen challenges that some students bear. And so, teachers must not just be instructors but also caring guides. Students should not be mere learners but individual souls navigating storms they keep concealed. These struggles are seldom visible, but we have the power to look beyond the surface and extend a hand of compassion.

The quiet kid in the corner whom no one notices could be breaking down inside, her inner world full of instability and questions, switching between being fine and being overwhelmed and overthinking. The radiant smile of the admired student might be hiding his inner challenges. They may seem alright, yet deep down, they could be crying over the smallest "minor" things.

In the shared school life, we must strive to see the unseen. In every school, in every home, in every environment, no one must fight alone; together, we will break through adversities, and ensure that no one's silent storm goes unnoticed.

The warm rays of the sun cast a golden hue over the familiar facades of our beloved institution. While each day brings challenges and triumphs, yesterday stands out with a particular significance. It's a day dedicated to the unsung heroes of our academic world: the relentless employees. These are not just educators but a diverse group of individuals who, with their bravery, hard work, creativity, and ambition, form the backbone of our learning journey, ensuring it is smooth, enriching, and inspiring at every turn.

Delve a bit deeper, and one can witness each employee's profound impact on the institution. The mathematics teacher, with her intricate dance of numbers on the board, the English professor who weaves tales that transport young minds to different realms, the diligent groundskeeper who ensures that the gardens bloom year-round, and the spirited cafeteria staff who serves meals with a side of warmth. Individually, each of these bodies contributes distinctly towards creating a lasting impact on our school years, thereby establishing a solid groundwork for the times to come.

The dedicated personnel inside our institution go beyond the call of duty. Their commitment is not limited to just imparting knowledge or maintaining our institution. It's not just about imparting knowledge or maintaining the premises. It's about the passion they exude, the countless hours they spend preparing for lectures, the extra time they invest in students who might be struggling, and the endless efforts they put into ensuring the institution's standards are always upheld.

While yesterday was earmarked for celebrating our esteemed employees, it's crucial to understand that their influence extends far beyond a single day's acknowledgment. Pisay Karsi community honors the campus employees and working staff this October 5 during the Employees' Day Event with the theme "the Magical World of Teaching: Reconnect, Recognize, Rekindle", organized by the Student Government (SG) and the General Parents-Teachers Association (GPTA).

Clark Anthony A. Villanueva, SG Public Information Officer, states "The theme is closely connected to how the PSHS-CARC employees are able to bring their unique magic in their own crafts, and this translates into our community, making it much more diverse and enchanting. "

He continues, "Teaching is also very difficult and tedious, and our teachers somehow are able to carry out this task. Our teachers and staff work magical, and they are exceptionally magical people."

This year's annual celebration programme consisted of batch performances, tributes, bidding portions, and a community lunch organized by the GPTA, as well as salon services for the employees, socialization activities, and the employee-for-a-day activity.

In the Karsi corridors of English literature, in our society where fact-checking is a forgotten necessity, and in the fast-paced domain of journalism and truth pursuit, not enough credit is given to whom it is due. Enough days have passed to once again remind us of the underemphasized heroes of the world of education; The Cordilleran Scholar celebrates this fitting day to pay tribute to the publication’s adept, distinguished advisor — MA’AM ABEGAIL E. PARIENTE.

In every annual first day orientation of the organization, Ma’am Abby never fails to establish in the minds of newcomers and have previous members recall the travails campus journalists go through on top of being students with heavy workloads. She continuously reminds us of the amount of sheer passion and undisputed dedication an individual must possess in order to be considered effective journalists. “It is not something I say to scare you with, it is the truth.”

And every year without fail, with a steady hand, she writes the path for campus journalists to be able to walk on their own. To be able to persist in standing as the voice of the students, even after our time with her has been completely written out. She leads with example, exhibiting everlasting commitment and devotion to the campus publication, instilling in us the characteristics of justice, diligence, and perseverance not only as journalists, but also as youth individuals.

Her impact extends outside the borders of the organization, spreading her ingenuity and literary ardor along the students she influences. Her genuine love for the journalistic craft manifests itself into the paragraphs she speaks, and this inspiration intrinsically pushes the people she shapes to work harder and live more fervently.

We dedicate the year to taking action based on these values, and progress even further both as persons and as the Cordilleran Scholar. We dedicate our hours to the pillar of our unfamiliar and complex journey as writers of the press.

Last September 22, the General Parents-Teachers Association (GPTA) organized a “Creative Festival” to end the celebration of the 15th foundation anniversary of PSHS-CARC.

The creative festival included 4 competitions, namely poster making, diorama making, slogan making, and poem writing.

The competitions aimed to foster a creative spirit outside of academics and to champion scholars’ talents outside of STEM.

Winners will be announced soon and awarded with corresponding cash prizes; participants will receive consolation prizes as well.

Recognition day shifts back to F2F

Many parents raised concerns regarding the decision of virtually holding the long awaited first recognition after the pandemic.

Due to this, the administration held a meeting to reconsider, and have now announced that the Recognition program will still proceed in person.

The Recognition and Levelling up ceremonies will now be conducted at Teachers Camp this Friday, June 16, 2023.

The application period to enter Pisay by taking the 2023 National Competitive Examination BEGINS on JUNE 13, 2023 while the DEADLINE of applications is on OCTOBER 13, 2023.

Who are qualified to apply as a Pisay scholar?
✅A current Grade 6, in SY 2023-2024, elementary pupil from a duly recognized school by the Department of Education who meets the following criteria is eligible to apply for the PSHS National Competitive Examination:
✅has a final grade of 85% or better in Science and Mathematics, evidenced by the student's report card; (If the student's grades in Science or Math are below 85%, then, he/she must provide evidence that he/she belongs to the upper 10% of the batch.)
✅a Filipino citizen with no pending or approved application as immigrant to any foreign country;
✅not be more than 15 years-old by June 30, 2024;
✅has at least a satisfactory rating (or its equivalent) in his/her Character Rating in his/her report card in Grade 5 or on S.Y. 2022-2023);
✅has not previously applied for admission in PSHS; and,
✅preferably in good health and fit to undergo a rigorous academic program.

How to apply?
👉Interested student applicants to the Philippine Science High School may apply directly to the nearest PSHS campus, DOST Regional Offices, and Provincial Science and Technology Offices
👉or apply via online platform through https://nce.pshs.edu.ph/

Requirements for walk-in applicants:
✅Fully accomplished application form, download athttps://pshs.edu.ph/wp-content/downloads/public_bidding/Promotional_Materials_for_2023_NCE/2023-NCE-Application-Form.pdf (incomplete form will not be processed);
✅Recent 1x1 ID pictures;
✅Non-refundable PHP 300 processing fee for private school students (based on the applicant's Grade 5 school);
✅Free or no processing fee for public school students and students with full scholarship from private schools;
✅Certified true copy of report card in Grade 5 (S.Y. 2022-2023) by the class adviser or principal
✅If the final grades in Science or Math are below 85%, certification or proof that the child belongs to the upper 10% of the batch; and,
✅Certification from the private school if the pupil-applicant is on full scholarship.

Requirements for online applicants:
✅Scanned/Digitized copy of most recent 1x1 ID pictures;
✅Scanned/Digitized copy of Proof of Payment of the PHP 300 processing fee for students who were admitted on a private school on fifth Grade (payment can be made on https://nce.pshs.edu.ph/);
✅Free or no processing fee for public school students and students with full scholarship from private schools;
✅Scanned/Digitized file of the certified true copy of report card in Grade 5 (S.Y. 2022-2023) by the class adviser or principal;
✅Scanned/Digitized copy of certification or proof that the child belongs to the upper 10% of the batch if the final grades in Science or Math are below 85%; and,
✅Certification from the private school if the pupil-applicant is on full scholarship.

Only the top 15,000 qualifiers based on the applicant's Predicted NCE Grade (PNG) computation shall be allowed to take the NCE on November 18, 2023. Out of the 15,000 examinees, 1,920 qualifiers are eligible to enroll as incoming seventh graders for SY 2024-2025 at the campus of their choice.
🟢In case the exam permits are not received two (2) weeks before the examination day or NOVEMBER 18, 2023, the applicants should check with the nearest PSHS campus, DOST Regional Office, DOST Provincial Science and Technology Office, or the PSHS System Admissions Office.

[Magazine Feature]
Though we mark an end to our seniors’ high school lives, there is no doubt that they left us with valuable memories and lessons, ones that would stay with us years after their graduation.

As we part our ways with the blooming batch Alstroemeria, let us read through their headlines, journeying through the eight petals that shaped CARC history forever. However different people, they are altogether the same— planting new seeds in their lives as Pisay graduates.

One last wish! To our CordiScho seniors, we wish you all the best in your pursuit of an untarnished truth, and we hope that you continue to spread the power of the written word in shaping our nation. But more importantly, continue to grow in the midst of sadness and fear, carrying the banner of hope with yourselves as you face new heights.

June 8, 2023 concluded the memorable six year journey of our seniors. Though bittersweet, CARC is eternally proud to see them be able to reach greater stars in life.

We have never been more honored to have them be a part of our lives, and to have them write down their legacies in CordiScho history.

We wish that you continue informing the nation, serving the community, and impacting the people you meet. To the seniors, thank you.

The Philippine Science High School - Cordillera Administrative Region Campus Student Government (PSHS-CARC SG) announced the official launch of one of its biggest projects, Iskology, the official learning resource center (LRC) of the campus last February 6.

Iskology is designed as an open avenue for scholars to improve their academic performances through peer mentoring sessions and resource sharing.

Scholars applying as student mentors will undergo a screening process by Iskology’s clerical staff, and must meet several requirements such as having a grade of at least 1.50 in the subjects they choose to teach, along with a recommendation from their homeroom adviser. PSHS-CARC alumni may also apply as mentors, and shall be responsible for online tutoring and assisting student mentors.

Student mentors must create their own resource materials, and may collaborate with alumni mentors in doing so. Said resource materials shall be submitted to faculty mentors for checking and screening to ensure the accuracy of their content before use in the tutoring sessions.

Any interested scholar can apply as a student mentee in their chosen subjects and, with their consent, be monitored to determine the effectiveness of Iskology in improving their academic standing.

After the application period, scholars will be assigned their subjects of choice and provided with their schedules before the implementation of the Iskology program.

✒️ 𝘒𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘢 𝘈𝘥𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘯

As the twelfth month falls from the calendar, the Philippines readies itself for yet another new year. But with this new start, the problems in this country are still waiting to be solved.

In every city in our country, there can be found gray, worn-down buildings many people are forced to live in. Behind the glamorous establishments live millions of our fellow Filipinos surviving on the few coins that they can earn for a living. Many times, we have woken up to another January 1, and yet the majority of us still consider basic human needs as luxury.

If you would listen hard enough you might hear, the cries of all the unborn children, killed before they even started to live. If you would listen hard enough, you would hear the sobbing of the women who could not obtain the means or money to take care of their child.

If you would open your eyes, you would see all the suffering in the country. If you would dream hard enough, people will live in decent homes, and all children will laugh and play. So, in this new year let us do what we can for the people of the country, and that dream would become a reality.
