Scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences have achieved the remarkable feat of reviving an ancient caryophyllaceous species, ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข, commonly known as the "narrow-leafed campion." This revival was made possible through in-vitro placental tissue culture using a fruit that had been frozen and preserved for over 32,000 years, dating back to the late Pleistocene epoch.

Distinguishing features between the modern and ancient ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข specimens were observed, particularly in their reproductive structures. The modern specimens exhibited petals that were closely spaced but wider and more dissected than those of the ancient counterpart.

The evolution of angiosperms, flowering plants that bear fruits, commenced in the late Cretaceous period approximately 100 to 125 million years ago. These plants developed reproductive structures such as flowers and fruits to attract pollinators and protect their seeds, ultimately ensuring their survival.

In 2007, an international team of scientists from Hungary, Russia, and the USA unearthed preserved valvate fruit capsules and seeds of ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข, buried by an extinct species of ground squirrel, the ๐˜œ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜บ๐˜ช๐˜ช. These ground squirrels had preserved the seeds and fruit remains in permafrost, freezing the plant material instantly. Carbon dating placed the recovered specimens between 20,000 to 40,000 years old.

In 2012, researchers from the Institute of Cell Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences successfully regenerated Silene stenophylla from preserved fruit placental tissue through in-vitro tissue culture. Although the preserved seeds proved non-viable for germination, the regenerated ancient specimens were determined to be approximately 32,000 years old, marking the preserved dry fruit of ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข as the oldest plant material ever brought back to life. This achievement surpassed the previous record held by the 2,000-year-old seeds of the Judean date palm

Upon comparison with extant and modern specimens, the revived ancient ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข displayed morphological differences in its reproductive features. The petals of the modern specimens were wider and more dissected, whereas those of the ancient specimen were narrower and less dissected. However, the vegetative features of both modern and ancient specimens remained indistinguishable. This remarkable adaptation and survival through evolution truly make the narrow-leafed campion a botanical champion.

On November 30, 2023, we stepped into our own pink world as the MalaCAS Dance Troupe, adorned with charm from head to toe, danced the โ€œnightโ€ away to a medley of tunes from Barbie (2023) and other iconic songs like the Macarena. As they swiftly drifted through the air, the performers skillfully conveyed the essence of being a woman through the art of dance.

Their performance proved to the audience the hardships of living in an imperfect world, discovering what one is made for. However, they also underscored our power to break free from a patriarchal society, shattering boundaries, defying unrealistic standards, and embracing the freedom to be anythingโ€”just like Barbie.

The MalaCAS Dance Troupe worked hand-in-hand to successfully come up with a fantastic performance, driven by a shared passion to win the competition from the outset. During their preliminary planning stages, Mr. Benedict Tanig was recognized as the mastermind behind the Barbie concept of woman empowerment, in which he incorporated its magic into their production. Thus, despite facing a more limited practice time frame compared to the previous year, as mentioned by Mx. Essen Tungol, they managed to pull through.

As expected, their dedication bore significant fruit, as they clinched the coveted โ€œBest Dressedโ€ award among the 13 contestants in the Honorian Best Dance Crew competition. Mr. Masaki Takaoka, a fellow member of Sapiens Multimedia and the MalaCAS Dance Troupe, emphasized that their joint effort in finding the perfect outfits further manifested that candidly, students of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) are the epitome of the adage โ€œbeauty and brains.โ€

In terms of other placements, the iNTLX dance crew from the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) emerged victorious as the competition champions. Following closely, the dance troupe representing the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA), known as CEA All Stars, secured the 1st runner-up position. Subsequently, CCS Encrypt of the College of Computing Studies (CCS) achieved notable success by obtaining the 2nd runner-up title and earning recognition for the best choreography among all participating colleges.

From all CAS students, a heartfelt congratulations to the MalaCAS Dance Troupe! Your outstanding performance and achievement have shone brightly, showcasing not only talent but also dedication and hard work. Each step, each move, and each effort contributed to your well-deserved success.

Earlier โ€“ In a display of strategic prowess in the board of black and white, Roxan Paras, a BS Mathematics student, placed 4th in the recent Chess Womenโ€™s Tournament in the DHVSU Intramurals 2023-2024.

In a fierce blitz match against the DHVSU Apalit Campus, Paras proved to be a formidable player against her opponent, gaining advantage through conquering the enemyโ€™s pieces, yet, the DHVSU Apalit Campus made a comeback against Paras and claimed victor via stalemate, placing their player in 2nd place.

The chessboard was once set ablaze for Paras and DHVSU Candaba Campus in a sudden death match to gain promotion for the bronze seat. Yet, despite her efforts, DHVSU Candaba Campus managed to stand triumphant against Paras, making DHVSU Candaba Campus the 3rd place in their respective category.

In a post-match interview with Paras, she stated that her competing for chess in the next yearโ€™s DHVSU Intramurals is a matter yet to be decided, but weโ€™ll make a comeback using new techniques and perspectives.

Congratulations on your efforts, Roxan Paras and fellow CAS Chess Players!

On Sunday, the CAS MLBB Women's Team triumphed over the College of Computing Studies (CCS), College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), and School of Law (SOL) with a dominating 2-0 victories, excelling among the nine groups in the eliminations.

Their first setback came when they faced the DHVSU Apalit Campus (DAC) team, conceding with a score of 0-2, dropping to the lower bracket. Despite this, they fought for redemption and continued their conquest with a clean 2-0 victory against the College of Education (COE). However, the journey concluded today as the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) proved to be the stronger team, ending the impressive run of the CAS MLBB women's team in the Land of Dawn.

Team captain Jean Kyla Morales, a BS ES student, acknowledged the toll the draft and consecutive games took on them, leading to challenges in the final matches. "I just want to tell them (teammates) that I'm so proud of them. Not everyone can achieve what they have achieved. They don't have to prove anything because what's important is that they did their best," she expressed. She extended gratitude to their coaches, Sir Rommel Garcia and Sir Ridel Juanico, for their unwavering support and guidance.

Nevertheless, it has been a well-fought battle, so let's cheer the loudest for our representatives! Thank you and GGWP CASmates!

Despite the College of Arts and Sciences men's basketball team giving their all, luck was not on their side, and they couldn't secure a spot in the championship. Nevertheless, they showcased an incredible display of teamwork and played with determination until the very end.

Meanwhile, the teams advancing to the semi-finals include the College of Business Studies (CBS), the College of Industrial Technology (CIT), the DHVSU Lubao Campus (DLC), and the College of Hospitality and Tourism (CHTM).

While acknowledging that losing is a tough experience, it's crucial to remember that there are valuable lessons to be gleaned from defeat, and winning isn't the only measure of success. We extend our sincere gratitude to our CASmates for their unwavering dedication and persistence in representing our college in basketball. Your efforts are truly admirable, CASmates!

Earlier - In a showcase of sportsmanship at this year's intramurals on November 29, 2023, the College of Arts and Sciences Table Tennis players, competing in both singles and doubles for men and women, demonstrated grace and resilience in the face of defeat.

In a closely contested match, Jimmy Benitez (BS Statistics 1-A) and Jamaeca Anne Serrano (BS Nursing 1-A) engaged in a thrilling singles match, displaying skill and determination. However, the outcome took an unexpected turn, resulting in a loss against formidable opponents.

Despite spirited efforts, the CAS men's singles player fell short with a score of 11-6 and 12-10 in favor of the opponent from the Senior High School department. In the women's singles, the SHS department secured a commanding win with two sets.
In surprising partnerships, CAS men's doubles participants Dave Garcia (BS Statistics 3-A) and Mico Panlillio (BS Biology 4-A) exhibited remarkable skills but faced a setback in a closely contested match. The encounter saw both teams fiercely battling with scores of 11-4 and 13-15 against the SHS department.

Beyond athleticism, the matches were a testament to the spirit of sportsmanship, with players exchanging respectful nods and handshakes after each match. Despite the losses, these experiences serve as opportunities for growth, embracing the challenges that come with competition.

CAS Delegatesโ€™ Valiant Efforts in Shot Put Falls Short

Despite showcasing steadfast determination and sheer grit, both men and women delegates of College of Arts and Sciences in Shot Put fell short of securing a podium finish during the opening day of DHVSU Intramurals 2023.

Men's delegates Franz Ian Capulong, from BS Mathematics 3-A, achieved a commendable throw of 7.77 meters, while Mharc Kenneth Ocampo, from BS Mathematics 3-A, covered an impressive distance of 6.71 meters.

Representing the womenโ€™s division are former CAS badminton athlete Patricia Beriรฑa from BS Mathematics 3-A with a 5.62 meter throw, demonstrating her cross-disciplinary talent in sports. On the other hand, Chrissie Lyka Manalang, a participant from BS Biology 3-B secured a noteworthy score of 5.30 meters.

In a statement, Manalang expressed her insights on the sports event, emphasizing that despite the unfavorable weather conditions, they enjoyed the game. She underscored the impact of their preparations on the overall experience which included arm endurance and strength trainingโ€“albeit without the use of a weighted ballโ€“which served as a crucial foundation for the performance they exhibited. Furthermore, she acknowledged the undeniable prowess of other participating departments in the competition.

As for the winners in the menโ€™s category, College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) delegates clinched both the 1st place and 2nd place with distances of 10.79 meters and 10.36 meters respectively. A standout College of Computing Studies (CCS) athlete secured the bronze medal with a score of 9.54 meters. In the womenโ€™s category, another CCS delegate claimed the top spot with a score of 8.50 meters, followed by the DHVSU Candaba Campus at 7.62 meters, and a bronze medallist hailing from College of Education (COE) securing a score of 7.28 meters.

With this, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and pride to our fellow CASmates for their valiant efforts in representing our college in Shot Put. We are proud of you, CASmates!

DHVSU ESSOC Leads the Charge Against Single-Use Plastics

Amidst the mounting concern over plastic waste, the DHVSU Environmental Science Society (ESSOC) stepped forward with an impactful initiative aimed at tackling the issue. Collaborating with MakeSense Asia, Philippine Association of Environmental Science Students (PAESS), and Tarlac State University, ESSOC orchestrated a Plastic Waste Collection Booth on November 15, 2023, surpassing expectations by collecting 79 kilograms of single-use plastics.

"We exceeded our initial target, showcasing the dedication of our students to address the pressing issue of plastic waste," remarked Zach Lopez, Director of DHVSU-ESSOC.

The campaign, held in observance of National Breakup with Sachets Day this coming November 18, sought to divert a minimum of 15 kilograms of single-use plastic waste away from landfills. However, the overwhelming support from students resulted in a substantial collection, highlighting the college's collective commitment to environmental stewardship.

"We're planning further initiatives to heighten awareness about the environmental and social repercussions of single-use plastics in the Philippines," Lopez added, hinting at forthcoming endeavors.

On top of this, the organization is collaborating for a webinar on Plastic Waste Reduction, to be hosted by Tarlac State University Environmental Science Society, this November 18, 2023.

To join this movement or learn more, reach out to DHVSU ESSOC .envisoc on facebook, and be part of the change.

Scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences were able to revive an ancient caryophyllaceous species, ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข or โ€œnarrow-leafed campionโ€ via in-vitro placental tissue culture from a fruit that had been frozen and preserved for more or less than 32,000 years ago from the late Pleistocene epoch. The modern specimens of ๐˜š. ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข were different from the ancient ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข based on their reproductive structures; the petals are closely-spaced but much wider and dissected than the ancient specimen.

The evolution of angiosperms, or plants that bear flowers and fruits started on the late Cretaceous period about 100 to 125 million years ago. Flower-bearing plants dominated the species percentage of green plants. In order to ensure their survival, angiosperms had developed reproductive structures in the form of flowers and fruits to allure pollinators and safeguard their seeds.

In 2007, scientists from Hungary, Russia and USA retrieved preserved valvate fruit capsules and seeds of ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข burrowed by an ๐˜œ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜บ๐˜ช๐˜ช (an extinct species of ground squirrel). These ancient ground squirrels had placed the seeds and fruit remains at the level of permafrost, instantly freezing the plant material. The recovered specimens were carbon-dated back to 20,000 to 40,000 years ago. In 2012, scientists from the Institute of Cell Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences were successful in regenerating ๐˜š. ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข from a preserved fruit placental tissue by in-vitro tissue culture. The organogenesis of adventitious shoots were induced to the placental tissue fragments of the preserved immature fruits in vitro. Unfortunately, the preserved seeds werenโ€™t viable for germination. The newly-revived ancient specimens were found out to be more or less than 32,000 years old, making preserved dry fruit of ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข to be the oldest plant material to be brought back to existence. It surpassed the 2,000 year-old record of the seeds of the Judean date palm

The revived, ancient ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข when compared to the extant and modern specimens, had differences in terms of their morphological reproductive features. The shape of the petals (corolla) in modern ๐˜š. ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข were wider and more dissected or incised, whereas in the ancient specimen, the shape of the petals were narrower and less dissected. However, vegetative features of both modern and ancient specimens were indistinguishable. This would mean that the narrow-leafed campion adapted and survived through the course of evolution, making it a true champion.
