National Heroes Day, a day where we honor the courageous individuals who have shaped our nation's history. These heroes, from revolutionaries to reformers, have fought tirelessly for our freedom and progress. Their selfless sacrifices have paved the way for the nation we know and love today.

But who are these heroes? When we are asked of heroes, our minds immediately drift to the prominent names like Rizal, Bonifacio, and Aguinaldo. Certainly, these individuals played major roles in our independence struggle. However, heroism extends beyond the battlefield. It encompasses acts of bravery, compassion, and dedication to the welfare of others.

Consider the unsung heroes who fought for social justice, equality, and human rights. The activists who stood up against oppression, the teachers who educated generations of Filipinos, and the doctors who risked their lives to heal those who are in need. These individuals, though less celebrated, have made significant contributions to our nation's development.

In recent years, we have witnessed a growing appreciation for the diverse heroes who have shaped our history. We have recognized the contributions of women, indigenous peoples, and other marginalized groups. These individuals, often overlooked in traditional narratives, have played vital roles in our nation's struggle for freedom and equality.

As we celebrate National Heroes Day, let us not only remember the well-known names but also honor the countless individuals who have made sacrifices for our nation. Let us be inspired by their courage, their compassion, and their unwavering commitment to a better future. By honoring our heroes, we not only pay tribute to their legacy but also reaffirm our own commitment to building a just and equitable society.

The hallways echoed with footsteps paving the corridors. Strings of laughter and chatter can be heard amongst the crowd. It's the first day of school, and students passed by with excitement and restlessness apparent on their faces. As I sauntered through the halls, excitement battled with the knot of anxiety in my stomach. My heart is beating rapidly. I pondered, "Will I fit in?"

I clutched the straps of my bag, weaving amidst the camaraderie full of unknown faces. I brought my head up, eyes tracing through their visage, hoping to find some sort of familiarity within, but found none. Baritone laughter caught my attention, compelling me to shift my focus in order to investigate the noise. Eyes widened at the sight in front of me, a pulse beating a medley of love songs. His laugh was honeyed and breathless, reminding me of a soft lullaby, and it was as if I had won a contest. What once was a dream manifested into reality through him.

He stood lean and tall, striking and conspicuous. A startling fervency was in his gaze. There he bathed under the incandescent light, and for a fleeting moment, I captured his gaze, a glimmer of recognition amongst the crowded hallway. There, I saw tomorrow's hope in his eyes, engulfing me in a feeling stronger than the heat felt in summer. I found solace and revelry in the depth of his gaze. Just for a moment, I basked in his attention.

Out of the blue, something changed. The knot in my stomach loosened, and warmth fluttered in my chest. The fear I held and all those negative emotions feeding my anxiety seemed to vanish, replaced by fluttering hope and a desperate yearning to connect. Maybe everything will be alright, and maybe the bridge between the two of us could be taken down.

Filled with newfound determination, I held my head up and straightened my posture, continuing to walk down the hallway. Despite the initial intimidation, a million possibilities course through me. For the sole reason of a momentary glance and his laugh, a melody engraved deep within my soul, I'll repeat for eternity.

Hi, I'm Sparky, and you're probably wondering why a cute Aspin resides in a place like this.

One day, it was raining just fine, and I was just wandering the slumberland. A chill breeze enveloped my tiny body, and my nose captured the petrichor emanating from the earth; these were sensuous. The excitement then got my mind operating the engines in me. As my orbs received the light, I was greeted with the steel bars of my cage, but I was already accustomed to it. My stomach suddenly complained, requesting that I fill it up with food. As usual, there's always a meal beside me, so I immediately devoured it until my hunger and thirst vanished.

While I was plainly looking at the environment around me, raindrops began to torrentially cascade, and winds suddenly strengthened. The change of weather triggered my instincts, telling me something's wrong, so I barked to alarm the people who have adopted me for almost three years, but it seems like they overlooked me since the rain pitter-pattering on their roof is louder. I continued barking for an hour until I noticed that the water was drastically risingโ€”it even entered the house. Wailing sounds started to accompany my bark, desperate to grab the attention of my family.

Minutes later, the water was already on my neck, and finally, I could sense the doorknob was twisting, so I was kind of relieved. I could see the anxiety and panic on their faces as they swiftly rushed outside, carrying necessities. They were evacuating! I used all my might to capture their attention in order to be released from these chains and this enclosure. I howled my loudest, hoping it overpowered the noisy storm. However, they had already reached the gates, the skies were even more enraged, and I was already swallowing some flood water.

I attempted to let out another bark, hoping to send echoes to the aurality of my panicking masters, or rather, my family. Alas, the water had already consumed me to its depth, taking away my bark and spark. But before the void of death completely seized me, I sent my heartfelt goodbye to the family I call home, and I sincerely prayed to the heavens, wishing that my family would arrive at a safe place and that I could guide them even from a different realm.

Now, I'm here in paradise along with the other furry spirits, but don't worry, I am playing and eating well here. Also, I'm now one of the stars, watching my loved ones from afar.

Love, Sparky! โ™กโ™กโ™ก

Every June 18th, the vibrant City of Bacolod pulsates with a special energy. This day marks Bacolod City Charter Day, a commemoration of its official designation as a chartered city in 1938. The signing of Commonwealth Act No. 326 by then-President Manuel L. Quezon marked a pivotal moment in Bacolod's history, paving the way for its growth and development into the thriving metropolis it is today.

While initially celebrated on October 19th, which coincided with the inauguration of the city's first officials, Republic Act No. 11146, signed by former President Rodrigo Duterte in 2018, rectified the historical inaccuracy and declared June 18th as the true foundation date.

Bacolod City Charter Day is more than just a historical marker; it's a vibrant celebration of Bacolod's unique identity and spirit. The city comes alive with a week-long festival dubbed "Mga Adlaw Sang Paghanduraw" (Days of Reminiscence). This festive period is a beautiful blend of historical reenactments, cultural presentations, and lively parades.

One of the highlights of the celebration is the civic-military parade, where contingents from various sectors showcase their pride in the city. The energetic performances at the MassKara Festival, known for its vibrant masks and costumes, often provide a glimpse into the festivities. Bacolodnons also take this opportunity to honor outstanding individuals and businesses that have significantly contributed to the city's progress. Awarding ceremonies recognize exemplary public servants and responsible businesses.

Bacolod City Charter Day is a time for Bacolodnons to look back on their heritage and the long road that led them to where they are today. It's also a day to look forward, to celebrate the city's achievements, and to set their sights on a future filled with continued growth and prosperity. As Bacolod marches forward, Bacolod City Charter Day serves as a vital reminder of its remarkable journey and the bright future that lies ahead.

Fatherโ€™s Day 2024: Pillars of People's Lives

A fatherโ€™s worth is immeasurable because he often plays the Superman role, always ready to help his kids through every problem they encounter. Fatherโ€™s Day falls on the third Sunday of June each year. It is not only about biological fathers but also all father figures in our lives. It is a day to show our dads how much we love and appreciate them. This year, many are opting for experiences over material things as a way of celebrating. Family outings and game nights are increasingly becoming popular ways of creating everlasting memories. Let us therefore honor fathers and father figures by showing grand gestures or moments of appreciation that make our lives richer in so many ways.

The inception of Fatherโ€™s Day is largely attributed to Sonora Smart Dodd, a citizen of Spokane, Washington. Her father, who bore her and five other siblings after their mother died in childbirth, was a veteran of a civil war. It occurred to Sonora that fathers should have a special day like mothers do after hearing a Motherโ€™s Day sermon in 1909. The first ever Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, as the local religious leaders approved it, which was incidentally his birth month. From its humble beginnings with deep religious roots, Fatherโ€™s Day has become an occasion marked by gifts and cards.

Even in 2024, Fatherโ€™s Day continues to keep pace with times where it embraces different roles played by men today in relation to fatherhood. A lifetime remains unforgettable when we spend family time either walking around, cooking together for one another, or just loving each other's company in general. As technology has advanced from the traditional era into the present digital one, there are special ways through which we can recognize the effort our fathers have put forth both near and far apart during this day. Therefore, let us not forget that the real meaning of this day is love and gratitude, while we pay homage to our fathers as our support system. Happy Fatherโ€™s Day to all the amazing fathers out there!

It is a rainy day, and you are riding a jeepney. From left to right, you can hear the bustling streets, and with the third drop of rain on your shoulder, you fell asleep. When you wake up, you still hear the loudness of the surroundings, but this time, the air is filled with cheers of pride, and as you look around, the realization kicks in that you are transported to the time where freedom comes alive in a country where hope is nearly impossible.

June 12, 1898, was the day of the proclamation led by General Emilio Aguinaldo that the Philippines had come to claim its independence from the ruthless reign of the Spaniards. In the very own house of Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite, the raising of the Philippine flag was held, which sparked a sense of achievement and pride in the hearts of the Filipino people. Blending in the crowd, you saw the heartwarming smiles of your fellow countrymen while finding yourself touched in a moment that weighs a heavy weight in our history.

Fast forward when time took you to a different era, July 4, 1946โ€”another celebration occurred on this date when the United States of America formally acknowledging and announcing the independence of the country from America, which also led to changing the name 'Commonwealth of the Philippines' to the 'Republic of the Philippines' that we know in the present. From then on, the country recognized this date as the day of independence, but not until the former president Diosdado Macapagal issued Proclamation No. 28, s. 1962, to officially move independence day to June 12, as he believes that the day when the flag was first held up in Kawit was the day that not just Aguinaldo but the people of the Philippines declared their freedom and liberty from decades of suffering and inequality.

From all that time travel to the past, you realize how Filipinos before fought and strived for the freedom that we are experiencing in the present. You heard a snap and finally woke up to the modern Philippines. You're still in the jeepney, and as you look through the window, amidst the continuous rain blurring your vision, you still see the vibrant hues of the Philippine flag which are held up everywhere, just like the vibrant smiles in those faces you saw beforeโ€”with different versions and different memories.

Today, the Philippines is celebrating the 126th year of its independence, and let us all take a moment to honor the people who fought for our freedom, appreciate and utilize the freedom that we have today to express our rights as Filipinos, and make significant contributions for the benefit of the country who not only suffered but also fought for future generations to maintain the glory of the Philippines. The colors red, blue, white, and yellow surely look vibrant, especially on Independence Day.
