LNHS staff hold VAWC Symposium and Mental Health Support Seminar

Staff members of Luna National High School (LNHS) gathered today at the Karibu Resort in Abulug, Cagayan, to participate in a dual-focused event aimed at promoting awareness and providing support in critical areas: Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) and Mental Health.

The symposium, titled “VAW: Bigyang-Wakas, Ngayon na ang Oras!”, was led by Imelda A. Burigsay, PhD, the school’s Principal, who emphasized the importance of establishing and maintaining a functional VAW Desk within schools and communities.

Dr. Burigsay highlighted how crucial it is for educational institutions like LNHS to take an active role in combating violence against women and children, stressing that immediate action is necessary to end the cycle of abuse and violence.

The theme of the symposium reinforced the urgency of addressing violence and the collective responsibility to create safer environments for vulnerable individuals.

In addition to the VAWC symposium, the event also featured a mental health support session led by Ma. Teresa M. Bermudez, Head Teacher III at LNHS. Bermudez’s talk focused on understanding stress, its sources, and effective coping strategies.

With increasing concerns about mental health, particularly in the academic community, Bermudez’s session provided participants with valuable insights into how they can manage stress and support their own mental well-being as well as that of their students.

The gathering marked a pivotal moment for the staff of LNHS to reflect on both the societal issues of VAWC and the importance of mental health care, encouraging ongoing education and open dialogue within the school community.

Heizel C. Vasquez is the school‘s GAD coordinator.
