Dumalo at magpadalo!

OFFICIAL STATEMENT on INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ DAY

College Editors Guild of the Philippines Central Luzon joins all campus publications, journalists, and the Filipino masses in solidarity with our fight for genuine press freedom and student rights and welfare as we celebrate International Students’ Day.

We are at a critical part of history as we witness the prospective crisis of the world capitalist system. Across the globe, we see the rising death toll of members of the press in and outside their line of work. The Zionist Israel apartheid regime backed by the US has murdered more than 40 journalists as part of their genocide of the Palestine people. The press is grappling with the intensifying machinery of misinformation threatening the fabric of truth and integrity in journalism.

In the Philippines, students alike suffer through the educational crisis that was further worsened by the pandemic and the state’s failure to take accountability.

The neoliberal attacks on education echo through our student-led publications. CEGP CL has received reports of rampant Campus Press Freedom Violations from both public and private schools in the region. These violations include meddling by the adviser, withholding of funds, administrative intervention, and other forms of censorship. Such actions not only infringe upon the rights of student journalists but also compromise the democratic ideals that a free press should possess. School administrations should recognize the integral role of the campus press in shaping public opinion and holding institutions accountable.

In lieu of International Students’ Day, we emphasize the power that the Fourth Estate holds. Student publications have the power to foster informed, critical, and independent discourse. This warrants us to stand in one with the struggles of our workers, urban poor communities, indigenous peoples, and the masses. It demands us to be part of standing against oppressive systems that hinder us from fulfilling our obligation to the people. Being part of the press warrants us to safeguard the principles of freedom, and champion truth through reliable and grassroots reportage.

College Editors Guild of the Philippines Central Luzon invites all student publications in the region to reaffirm and join the sole and broadest alliance of tertiary student publications in the Asia-Pacific.

BE PART OF HISTORY, JOIN CEGP-CL!

NEWS: Gunshots fired outside home of Tinang peasant Leader

Masked individuals riding a motorcycle and an Innova vehicle encircled and fired shots outside the house of Alvin Dimaracut, chairperson of MAKISAMA Tinang last August 6 at around 10 PM amid the installation of agrarian reform beneficiaries in Tinang. It is suspected that at least 5-6 assailants were involved.

Malayang Samahan ng mga Magsasaka sa Tinang (MAKISAMA-Tinang) has filed a police blotter as a response to the incident, they also condemn the harassment and the continued attacks they are receiving because of the pending installation to their land.

“Pang-4 na beses na ito ng pagpapa-blotter ng mga magsasaka bukod sa iba pang mga insidenteng di pa naiblotter sa walang puknat at tuloy-tuloy na atake sa mga kasapi at lider nila,” said Makisama Tinang in an official statement published in their page.

The group condemned the Philippine Army as well as the Tinang Samahayang Nayon Multipurpose Cooperative for allegedly terror-tagging them and their supporters and lawyers which allegedly puts them in a crosshair to attacks and harassment.

Tinang Samahayan Nayon Multipurpose Cooperative (Tinang SN-MPCI) is an organization of farmers and landholders that is controlled and dominantly owned by the family of Conception Mayor Noel Villanueva, the cooperative that controls the disputed land.

However, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) has already released an order of ex*****on and finality ordering the installation of Tinang farmers in their rightful land.

They also further stated that DAR has made a decision to open 100 hectares of land for application hence landless farmers in Tinang can apply to have their own land.

ALERT! ALERT!

The Angelite presents its third Martial Law issue for the academic year 2022-2023.

This magazine highlights art and feature stories that depict the truth of ML amid the alternative narratives brought by disinformation, whitewashed stories, and historical denialism. These alternative narratives are peddled by Marcos Jr. himself, his cronies, content creators, and influencers that undermine the credibility of historical data, historians, ML victims, and journalists.

In its golden anniversary, we remember the people whose voices and actions were severed due to dissent. Moreover, we bear in mind the brutality that Marcos Sr. imparted to the country and our countrymen.

Marcos weekend getaway in Singapore is unnecessary, irresponsible says BAYAN

Multisectoral group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) slammed the Singapore trip of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. together with his family to watch the F1 Grand Prix on Sunday, October 2, while calling it unnecessary, insensitive, and irresponsible.

The Marcos trip drew flak online as it was held days after the onslaught of typhoon Karding that devastated most parts of Luzon.

"We are in the middle of an economic crisis where inflation will again reach record highs….. and millions of Filipinos are reeling from the effects of typhoon Karding. So why does the President think it’s okay to take a private jet to Singapore to watch the return of the F1 Grand Prix?" BAYAN Secretary General Renato Reyes Jr. upbraided.

They also questioned how much the Filipino taxpayers paid for the president's Singapore getaway while also explicating that the presidency and a jet-setting lifestyle are incompatible.

"We are approaching the first 100 days in office of Marcos and it has been one party after another since he returned to Malacanang," Reyes said.

Malacañang kept mum about the trip until Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles cited the Facebook post of Singapore Minister for Manpower See Leng that mentioned the president's name, claiming that the trip was "productive."

“Naging produktibo ang pagdalaw sa Singapore ni Pangulong Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. Pinagpatibay niya ang mga pangunahing usapan sa huling state visit sa bayan na ito, at pinatuloy ang paghihikayat sa pag invest sa bayang Pilipinas,” she said.

September 21.

This might be a simple day for some people. However, 50 years ago, a huge number of our countrymen suffered at the hands of a heinous dictator, Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. On September 21, 1972, the late dictator signed Proclamation No. 1081, the reason behind the placement of the Philippines under a Martial Law state. A total of 107, 240 people became victims during this period, where 70,000 were arrested, 34, 000 people had to experience brutal torturing methods, while 3, 240 faced death as they were killed by the assigned military and policemen. In addition, 464 media outlets were forced to shut their operations, and about 35 journalists were killed, while others were put behind bars and harassed during the Martial Law Era, as Marcos desired to control the information being published every day.

The figures above are already more than enough evidence to disown Marcos for the atrocious things he and his family committed during the ghastly Martial Law Era. Let us not forget such reprehensible things happened during one of the darkest days of Philippine history as wrongdoings that are not acknowledged are likely to occur again in the modern day, especially since the son of the dictator, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has been enjoying the highest executive seat today, denying his father's abhorrent deeds.

Now that the shackles have been broken and the Philippines has had attained democracy, do not let the loyalists close our eyes again using fake news and baseless sources. As citizens of the Philippines, it is our utmost duty to discover our history. It is for us to see the events that emerged from the past so we can reflect and never forget up until the last wave of our flag.

Read. Write. Advance. Stand. Open the eyes. These are some of our missions, especially the press, so atrocities like those that occurred during the Martial Law era will never be repeated.

September 21. Never again. Never forget.
