[English Translation]

To our fellow advocates for Kapampangan Language and Culture: we would like to ask for your support.

We have already started writing what we would like to call, Ing Kanákung Kúyug king Pámanigáral Amánung Sísuan or “My Kapampangan Learning Companion.” This will serve as our module and guidebook, especially for us parents, in teaching how to speak, read and write our beloved Kapampángan Language even if we have no background in teaching it. The book will be simple and easy to understand.

The expense that will be incurred for this project is expected to be immense. The project will require quite a length of time and hard work. As Kevin Batscher, a Swiss linguist assisting us in the Kapampangan language puts it “Did you consider applying for a grant to get funding for the writing? I'm happy to help, but this ambitious project and timeline requires more than just occasional occupation but rather dedicated continuous work.” While we are in the process of looking for institutional funders, may we ask for financial support in order that we may continue the work for our beloved mother tongue.

Awsan kó pú réng malugud at ating masabal keng Amánung Sísuan, a call to action:

"Agyáng é ku magaling king Kapampángan, expert náku man king English," ngára, ó kayá, "Agyáng é ké gamat ing Kapampángan, ako'y isang dalubhasa sa Wikang Filipino," ngára pa. (They say “Even if I’m not good in Kapampángan, I’m an expert in English” or “Even if I don’t have a clear grasp of the Kapampángan language, I’m a master in the Filipino language). Mákaríné man, it is embarrassing to admit, but sadly, this is the sentiment of a majority of the Kapampángan people, including myself. Why is this? How did it come to this?

The reason is that we were never taught Kapampángan in school. While we were taught “A is for Apple” from the very first day that we stepped foot in the classroom, as well as all those katinig, patinig, pangngalan, panghalip, and pandiwa in Filipino (Tagalog), this was, and is, never the case for the Kapampángan Language. Many Kapampángans don’t even know which letters to use in writing their own language in the Roman Script ~ whether to use Q & C, or K? Very few have ever read a book in Kapampángan, much less write in Kapampángan, except in informal settings like text messages or Facebook posts and comments.

With the parental and grandparental generation being oblivious with how their own Kapampángan Language works, how could they pass on the language to the next generation of Kapampángan children? Indeed, a lot of parents have been raising their kids to speak Tagalog rather than their own Kapampángan Language. Advocates and scholars alike have expressed concerned on the actual endangerment of the Kapampángan Language.

In the last decade, there was an attempt by the Philippine national educational system to teach children their Mother Tongue with the MTB-MLE (mother tongue-based multi-lingual education) program, but it failed miserably. Now that attempt has been officially shelved. So what now?

I’m tired of hearing the rants of Kapampángan Language advocates who are losing hope for our beloved Amánung Sísuan, our native Kapampángan Language. It is time to do something about it.

As a passion project, the Ágúman Sínúpan Singsing, Inc. will attempt to embark on a revolutionary Kapampángan Language program that will empower ordinary Kapampángans, particularly parents, to teach the Kapampángan Language to their children, even if they have no teaching background. These workbooks will be simple enough to understand, yet linguistically sound. Their design will be supervised by Linguists and experienced educators from at home and abroad, side by side with Kapampángan culture bearers and Kapampángan language experts.

To serve as reference for this workbooks, a new and accurate description of the Kapampángan Language will have to be written and published. It will be simple enough to understand by non-linguist and yet linguistically sound and accurate. It will be comprehensive enough as to cover what ordinary native Kapampángan speakers don’t know about their language. Hopefully this reference book will be done by the end of this year, if not early next year.

Our vision is to spread this untaught knowledge about our native Kapampángan Language to the entire Kapampángan speaking community around the globe, whether native or non-native speaker, and encourage everyone to teach and pass on their language to children. Since this will be an ambitious and expensive undertaking, we would need the help of every Kapampángan to support this project financially and morally. Together we can end the endangerment of our beloved Amánung Sísuan and stop its impending extinction.

“Ing Danum, Deng Pun Dutung, Ampo Yaku” is a children’s book, originally written in the English language as “Water, trees, and me”. It has been beautifully translated to the Kapampangan language to cater to the advocacy of making more Kapampangan children relearn their mother tongue, and at the same time understand the benefits of caring for the environment.
The idea stemmed from an advertising classroom where the author served as the class lecturer. He challenged his class on how to increase awareness in saving the watershed. From there, his students came up with various creative approaches in engaging the public into realizing its importance. Branched from the creation of mascot characters: the “Planters” (Mananaman) and the “Cutters” (Manalaksan) families, the author developed the idea into a simple to understand but insightful story of how two families found balance in co-existing to protect the local environment.

About the book

"An Introduction to Kulitan" is partly a historical/cultural book, since it talks about the Kapampángan people and their form of writing, but mostly it is an instructional guide on how to write in Kulitan. Kulitan is to Kapampángans, what Baybayin is to the Tagalogs.
