DA RFO 2 conducts technical briefings on Bee Keeping and Honey Production; farmers receive agri inputs under HVCDP

Considering its potential and rising demand in the market, the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office No. 02 (DA RFO 02) through its High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) has conducted technical briefings on Bee Keeping and Honey Production under mango and coffee plantation area on March 16, 2023 at the DA-Nueva Vizcaya Experiment Station (DA-NVES), Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya.

Moreover, National Coffee Focal Mr. Enrique Dela Cruz emphasized the growing demand for honey in the international market considering its health benefits.

“After it was tested and proven by research that honey has a lot of health benefits and uses in medicine, there is now an increasing international demand for honey,” Dela Cruz said.

The National Coffee Focal also mentioned the country’s low supply of honey production at present due to the unavailability of raw materials and a small number of beekeepers/honey producers.

“That is why we are conducting this technical briefing for you to learn, share your knowledge and use your knowledge in agribusiness," he added.

“Through this, it will be easy for us to convince our policymakers to allot funds for you, for them to know na totoong may nangyayari sa ibaba at hindi ito drawing lang."

Dela Cruz also commended the farmers for their efforts and contributions to national food security.

Thus, DA-Cagayan Valley Research Center (DA-CVRC) staff Ms. Jessica Bernardo lectured about fertilization, pruning, and rejuvenation technology for coffee and mango, DA-RCPC staff Ms. Irene Estrella talked about pest and diseases management while UP Instructor for Organic Agriculture Engr. Emilio Climaco discussed beekeeping and honey production.

Meanwhile, sixteen (16) farmers’ cooperatives and associations (FCAs) received a total amount of P699, 368.50 worth of agricultural inputs from DA RFO 02 funded under HVCDP.

With a total of 650 bags of controlled-release fertilizer, 620 plastic crates, and 115 bee colonies, the said recipients were the following:

Further, HVCDP Regional Coordinator Ms. Carol Albay challenged the farmers to expand their production and properly utilize the agricultural inputs.

“Hopefully, sa susunod po nating pagkikita-kita, lumaki na po ang production niyo ng coffee at mango, nakapagharvest na rin po kayo ng honey at nakakapagbenta na rin.”

“We give you these interventions because we want you to boost your production and income. As our unsung heroes, you deserve to be given such,” she added.

Difference between Arabica and Robusta🍒🍒

✓Arabica tends to have a smoother, sweeter taste, with flavour notes of chocolate and sugar. They often also have hints of fruits or berries.

✓Robusta, on the other hand, has a stronger, harsher and more bitter taste, with grainy or rubbery overtones.
✓Robusta beans are much more circular.
✓Arabica are more oval.

✓Robusta has a higher percentage of caffeine per bean (around 2.2 to 2.7%).
✓Arabica has a lower percentage of caffeine per bean (around 1.2 to 1.5%). A brewed cup of robusta coffee will have more caffeine than a cup of arabica coffee...
