BisiTA ISkwela Team Strengthens Instructional Excellence at TNHS
Tabunan, Almeria, Biliran —BisiTA ISkwela team visited Tabunan National High School (TNHS) on October 20, 2025, to provide technical assistance in instructional supervision, emphasizing literacy, numeracy, and effective lesson delivery.
Leading the team were Dr. Rommel Tan Sr., Education Program Supervisor in Mathematics; Dr. Caroline Y. Lumagsao, OIC–Public Schools District Supervisor of Maripipi; Francisco Bayon-on, Education Program Supervisor in TLE; and Herman D. Donato, OIC–Public Schools District Supervisor of Almeria.
This visit aimed to strengthen instructional practices and support teachers in improving student performance. TNHS School Head Mr. Patricio P. Laurito Jr. warmly welcomed the team and expressed appreciation for their guidance.
“They are here to provide technical assistance,” Mr. Laurito said during the Exit Conference.
During the discussion, Dr. Tan emphasized that the visit was meant to assist and enhance instructional practices rather than to find fault.
“We just want to see how you prepare your lessons and others related to instruction,” Dr. Tan explained.
“The purpose is how we can contribute to improvement and not to find fault. Literacy and numeracy should be a shared responsibility by everyone,” he added.
Dr. Lumagsao led the Literacy component through on-the-spot reading assessments, while Mr. Donato focused on Numeracy.
Meanwhile, Dr. Tan and Mr. Bayon-on checked instructional documents and observed classroom teaching.
The team also commended the school’s cleanliness and beautification efforts.
Literacy Findings and Recommendations
• Literacy remains the school’s top concern, with several frustration readers identified.
• Suggested strategies to enhance fluency and word recognition include:
1. Modeling or Echo/Guided Reading
2. Word Wall Activities
3. Daily Spelling Practice
4. Buddy Reading
5. Promoting the principle that “Every Teacher is a Reading Teacher.”
Numeracy Findings and Recommendations
• Some learners find subtraction of integers challenging.
• Recommended interventions include:
o Implementing school-based numeracy initiatives
o Encouraging math practice during free time
o Conducting parallel tests prior to regional math assessments
Mr. Bayon-on highlighted the need for integration across learning areas and consistency in lesson planning. The team also shared several pieces of technical advice to improve instructional delivery:
• Follow the prescribed lesson plan format.
• Use a unified Daily Lesson Plan (DLP) for all teachers.
• Address the “gray area” in lesson unpacking and include this in the upcoming In-Service Training (INSET), with the Budget of Lessons as output.
• Fill in the Reflection part of the lesson plan to guide future instruction and serve as a basis for technical assistance.
• Prepare lesson plans for planning purposes, not mere compliance.
• For test construction, ensure alignment with the Table of Specifications (TOS), accurately identify cognitive levels, and maintain consistency between test items and intended skills.
Dr. Tan reassured teachers that improvement takes time but is achievable through cooperation and dedication.
“It’s just difficult at the beginning,” he encouraged.
BisiTA ISkwela visit concluded with words of appreciation from both the supervising team and the school head, reaffirming their shared goal of delivering quality education for every Tabunan National High School learner.
