OPPOSITION HIGHLIGHTS ISSUES AFFECTING THE COUNTRY

THE Opposition Team today raised grievous concerns regarding issues affecting the nation in terms of increasing Law and Order problems, the issue with fuel crisis and cash flow crisis, shortage of medical drugs and funding to procure drugs, amongst others.

In addressing this issue, the Alternative Prime Minister Reinbo Paita highlighted that there is a major break down in law and order in the country, and calls on the government to Appoint a strong Police Minister to make drastic decision and tougher penalties to be imposed to address the law-and-order issues.

Mr Paita also reiterated, that the government is not dealing with law and order, and it needs to start taking action.

There is an increase in illegal trade of drugs by syndicates that are growing in numbers.

"The issue of drug trade is so untouched and protected, our country is becoming a point for transnational crime and what is the government doing about it.

"We have reports of such, setting up crime factories here, and we can not continue to see this and not do anything about it. The government should have a very hard stance on this or else we will be spectators in our own land," Mr Paita emphasized.

He also added the country is flooded with illegal immigrants that are taking over reserve business from local citizens and he calls on the Prime Minister James Marape to appoint a strong Immigration Minister as well to make strong decision in addressing this issues that is continuing to cripple this nation to its knees.

Meantime, the Opposition is ready to rescue the country from the plight it is in, having mentioned they have drafted their policies to change the course of the country.

MINISTER MARU CALLS FOR RECOGNITION OF SIR PITA LUS

Minister for International Trade and Investment and Senior East Sepik MP, Hon. Richard Maru today called on the Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape and the Pangu Party to deliver a special memorial for Late Sir Pita Lus in the form of Sir Pita Lus School of Excellence at his home district of Maprik.

Minister Maru made this call today as Pangu Party celebrates its 57th anniversary.

“Sir Pita Lus was a founding member of pre-independence Pangu Party and also a firebrand MP who represented Maprik District for three decades after political independence. He was a Pangu Party strongman who helped usher Papua New Guinea (PNG) to independence and he was there from the start of its political history. He served PNG with distinction in a career in elected office that started in June 1964. He had a hand in the key moments of PNG’s history from attaining self-government in 1973 to contributing to the drafting of the Constitution in 1974. Sir Peter persuaded Sir Michael Somare to enter politics when he was a young radio broadcaster, and the rest is PNG history,” said Minister Maru.

Minister Maru stated: “As a founding member of the Pangu Party, the party needs to honor their great man. He spent over 40 years in the parliament and he deserves to be given a recognition which is well and truly overdue. Other founding fathers have been given their recognitions and Sir Pita Lus deserves one too by building a school of excellence in his honor at his home district to be a perpetual reminder to the people of Maprik of the great leader they produced in the pre-independence era.”

Minister Maru further stated: “Sir Pita Lus is an icon of PNG politics but there is nothing to remember him for. I want to ask the Prime Minister and the Pangu Party on behalf of the people of Maprik for the Government to fund the Sir Lus School of Excellence at Kwari in Bumbita-Muhian LLG of Maprik District so his legacy will live forever. I not only speak for my People First Party (PFP), but I also speak for the people of Maprik, the people of East Sepik Province as their senior MP in the parliament and a Senior Minister in the Cabinet, and also as a coalition partner of the Pangu Party.”

Minister Maru made this call this morning at the swearing-in ceremony of two new MPs, including his PFP candidate for Maprik Open, Hon. Libert Kapris.

“In our election campaign, we made a commitment to the people of Maprik that we will honor Sir Pita Lus and we would like our coalition partner- the Pangu Party to help us deliver that,” said Minister Maru.

Minister Maru and Hon. Kapris met with the Secretary for Department of Education, Dr. Uke Kombra and they have agreed to work closely together to deliver this project. Minister Maru will be taking a submission to the NEC for the funding for this project to be included in next year’s budget.

CENSUS PROJECT READY TO KICK OFF

Papua New Guinea is preparing for its upcoming national census, scheduled from June 17 to June 30, 2024, with the aim of obtaining accurate population data to support national planning and development.

In a press conference earlier today, Minister for Administrative Services and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Constitutional Matters Hon. Richard Masere emphasized the critical need for reliable data to inform infrastructure development, such as schools and roads, to meet the demands of the growing population.

“The last census in 2011 estimated the population at approximately 7.4 million, but the accuracy of this figure was questioned,” he said.

Minister Masere acknowledged the challenges posed by the country’s rugged terrain and climate change but assured that contingency plans are in place to address issues like floods and landslides.

He stated that the government is collaborating with the Australian High Commission to utilize satellite imagery from the Australian Defence Force for data collection in inaccessible areas.

“This census will employ digital tablets for data collection, enabling real-time upload to cloud storage, a significant improvement over previous manual methods that produced less reliable information,” he added.

Census Director Mrs. Hajily Kele explained the use of the 'reference night' methodology, which records the location of individuals on the night of June 16, 2024, to prevent miscounting.

UNFPA representative and Census Technical Advisor Mercedita Tia highlighted that UNFPA is providing technical assistance to ensure the census meets international standards.

The project, with a budget of K17.5 million, has already begun groundwork, aiming to collect comprehensive and accurate data critical for the nation’s future planning and development.

The Chairman’s Seminar Series is part of informing and influencing. The PNGNRI’s 10-year Strategic Plan, the PNGNRI Council agreed to convene a series of seminars under the PNGNRI Council Chairman’s Seminar Series. The Council believes that it is only through collaboration with key stakeholders that research information can be utilized to shape better policy outcomes and informed decision-making. Hence, in 2023, the PNGNRI commenced the Chairman’s Seminar Series that will deal with specific industry or sector issues and opportunities by bringing in policy implementers analysts, academics, and researchers to present to the industry, society, and government.
Community empowerment and development have been approached in many ways over the years with
different motivations and interests, be they from the perspective of the government, the private
sector, international donor agencies, civil society organizations, or other interest groups.
Research done by PNGNRI identified six approaches. These are the knowledge-centered approach,
project-based approach, minimum basic needs approach, people-centered approach, best model
approach, and integrated approach. These six approaches are options.
Considering the research focus of the PNG NRI through the Culture and Society Research Program,
and the need to encourage discussion and fruitful engagement among key stakeholders on existing
programs and identified threats and essential reform agenda for a desirable outcome, the seminar is
proposed. The main objectives of the seminar are as follows:
• To bring together the Department of Community Development, Family and Youth and its
Boards and Agencies to connect between development partners – churches, NGOs,

RACE TO VONC TAKES ANOTHER TWIST

By Nigel Mado

Just days out from the next rise of parliament and the wheels are set in motion for a Vote of No-Confidence are being ramped up to the 28th of this month. Yesterday the Opposition set up camp at the Sanctuary Hotel to bolster their numbers come time for parliament.

In yet another twist to the story, a purported 18 members of parliament and 5 cabinet ministers have shifted seats to the opposition. Prime Minister James Marape in a media release yesterday evening informed the country of the departure of the members from Government.

The Prime Minister thanked those who left, thanking them for their service to the Government and the people. He still maintains that Pangu Pati Members still remain intact with 41 members and welcomed the challenge from the opposition.
PM Marape says, this is a play for vote of no confidence, and as such they are joining the opposition that has Allan Bird as their nominee.
He says, Leaders are elected by their people and they have their rights to associate with leaders of like minds, and wishes them well to assemble an alternative team and policy series that hopefully can do better for PNG then the Pangu and coalition team.

The Prime Minister now urge all Papua New Guineans to respect leaders as they make their choice and ply their trade and also ask all people to treat all the leaders kindly as they process their thoughts on national leadership and national interests.

Meanwhile, in the Opposition camp, the number of members that crossed the floor of parliament has not been confirmed, but it can be ascertained that senior members of the Government. Earlier this morning, another Minister of Parliament was confirmed to have left. Bringing their number to 6 ministers to date.

At the moment the Opposition numbers have swelled to almost that of the Government from the original 16 members they had prior to this month.
