Best Christmas gift!
Families of Kokoda Track carriers at Sogeri received a surprise two days before Christmas when a box of the latest PNG Air Magazines was delivered to their homes in Depot village (Karakadabu).
The new issue has a cover story about a group of Australian dads and their kids who walked the track, and features many of the local carriers, along with local Sogeri school kids who the Australian trekkers treated to excursions to POM Nature Park and the National Museum.
Former carrier Solomon Kombi played Santa with the box of mags, collecting them from Moore Printing and taking them up to his hometown at Sogeri to give to Kokoda guide Sebi to hand out 'to the boys' across a number of villages. He then returned the next day to take photos for our post (thanks Solomon!).
Solomon has an inspirational story of his own. He worked as a carrier for Charlie Lynn's Adventure Kokoda company in the early 2000s while still in high school at Sogeri – "when I was young and full of energy!" he laughs. During that time he met and befriended Australian trekker Andrew Edwards. "We became best friends, and when he heard that I didn't have school fees, he sponsored me to do a six month Accounts Admin - Cert 3 course at IEA College (TAFE) at Ela Beach, in 2012," says Solomon. Thanks to that headstart with his education, Solomon now works at Air Niugini as an imports cargo officer at the international airport, and is putting his own three boys through school. His eldest son actually participated in one of the school excursions that the Australian trekkers organised to POM - so Solomon is very grateful for the friendships and opportunities that continue to be extended. "Being a carrier on the Track is a good opportunity for our young boys who are not working, and helps them bring things and food for the house," he said. "It's also big fun! And you meet people from other countries."

We ❤ Banoni baskets!!
Read all about the resourceful widows of this South Bougainville area who weave these exquisitely patterned baskets entirely from different coloured vines and cane collected from the bush – no dyes or store-bought materials at all!
The widow who co-ordinates a network of weavers, Martina Nasa, was recognised with an award as Bougainville's SME Woman of Influence at the SME Awards in October so now you can read her fascinating story in the latest PNG Air Magazine.

So disappointed for Neil Papenfus who has been training for this all year – but he is determined to try again in 2024 and we wish him the very best!
In the meantime, you can read all about this test of physical endurance by the GM of Pacific Towing to swim the English Channel for PNG charity Cheshire disAbility Services in the latest issue of PNG Air Magazine.

It’s with great disappointment that PacTow’s GM was unable to attempt his English Channel fundraising swim for Cheshire DisAbility Services in October as planned.
Dangerous weather conditions and unfavourable currents led to the cancellation of not just Neil’s swim but that of several other swimmers. He even extended his stay in the UK by 10 days in the hope that conditions would improve but they did not.
However, Neil remains committed to swimming the English Channel and has rescheduled his swim to June 2024.
Although he is obviously disappointed that he was unable to swim the Channel this year, the whole reason for his swim was to raise funds (and awareness) for the vital work that (Cheshire DisAbility Services) does to support people living with disabilities.
To date, more than 330,000 Kina (cash, goods, and services) has been pledged by many generous donors.
Neil is heartened and humbled by the good-heartedness of donors who have confirmed that Cheshire DisAbility Services can still use the funds promised even though his swim has been rescheduled.
Once again, Neil thanks everyone for supporting his fundraising efforts for Cheshire DisAbility Services.
