Papua New Guinea Beach Soccer created its own History today in taking part in their First ever International match.

The Team also scored one of the fastest goals in international Beach Soccer history in an incredible start to the OFC Beach Soccer Men’s Nations Cup in Honiara.

Having never played an international match, the Papua New Guinea players who hail from Fisherman Island off the coast of Port Moresby were expected to struggle against more experienced opponents.

But from the kick-off Demasol Manama blasted the ball into the net with the goal coming after just one and a half seconds.

The Boys shocked Fiji two minutes later with Ellygia Benard making it 2-0 before a shell-shocked Fiji found themselves three down a minute later when Goiravana Kala converted a freekick.

Fiji pulled a goal back through Adriu Nabose in the 6th minute before Papua New Guinea were at it again with another explosive free kick from Kala rifling past Sanaila Waqanicakau in the Fijian goal in the 9th minute.

Papua New Guinea ‘keeper Kopi Samuel made a mistake for Fiji’s second goal in the final minute of the first period as Jerry Sam’s side got back into the game.

The heavens opened in the second period and the scoring slowed, but it was Papua New Guinea who struck first with Benard nabbing his second.

France Catarogo then fired over the bar from the penalty spot for Fiji before another defensive mistake saw Steven Dean close the gap to two goals in the 20th minute.
Raven Samuel restored his side’s three goal advantage a minute later before Fiji closed the gap to two again, from a well struck free kick a minute before the end of the period.

As the rain continued to pour down, the clocked ticked down. Papua New Guinea extended their lead again through Joe Vere with six minutes remaining. But Fiji applied the pressure and struck twice in quick succession to close the gap to one.

With the Fijians pushing for an equalisier, Papua New Guinea were given a golden chance to kill off any resistance and duly did, with Ellygia Benard completing his hat-trick to add an eighth

Full-Time Score:
Fiji: 6 (Adriu NABOSE 6′ Own Goal’ 12’, Steven DEAN 20’, 32′, Navu WILLIE 23’, Rajneel SINGH 32′)
Papua New Guinea: 8 (Demasol MANAMA 1’, Ellygia BENARD 3’, 16’, 33′, Goiravana KALA 4’, 9’, Raven SAMUEL 21’, Joe VERE 30′)

MORE POSITIONS YET NO RESULTS
Opposition leader Douglas Tomuriesa has criticized the Prime Minister’s decision to appoint new vice-ministers and the intention of appointing more, without accounting for the work his existing ministers have produced thus far.
Mr. Tomuriesa said: “While our system of government allows for vice-ministers, these roles should be used when a certain minister or ministry genuinely needs extra support to carry the mandate of their duties, particularly in extenuating circumstances.

The event was attended by various Tertiary institutions in the National Capital District where they particularly explained the programs offered in their respective institutions and their requirements. There were total of 12 institutions who attended the event. The school Principal Ms. Jean Ifuda acknowledged the presence of the exhibitors and said this is the first of its kind that the school is hosting this event and the main purpose is to give the fair opportunity to the students to have fair knowledge of what the institutions are offering before they can do their final choices for the NOAS application. MEDIA RELEASE

DELAYS AND DISRUPTIONS ON AIR NIUGINI SERVICES

Air Niugini sincerely apologises for the disruption to travel plans being experienced by our loyal and patient customers – both passenger and cargo, domestic and international. The Air Niugini management will not make excuses for the abysmal service levels being experienced of late but will provide some clarity to ensure that there can be no confusion over the issues being faced by the national carrier.

Air Niugini was expecting to receive four Dash8-Q400 turboprop and two Boeing 737-800 aircraft by September 2023. Acting Chief Executive Officer, Gary Seddon stated: “Air Niugini operates aircraft to one of the highest standards of aviation and airworthiness in the world. This is a very good safety benchmark to have. This means that we will not cut corners on our interim aircraft acquisition program. And when we discovered that the Q400s that had been previously selected were not to standard, we cancelled the arrangements and went back to market. I will not risk our operations with aircraft that cannot be relied upon to improve our position.”

Air Niugini is currently negotiating with aircraft vendors in North America and in the meantime has accelerated heavy maintenance programs on its existing fleet. “We hope to be able to add to our turboprop fleet in the very near future, but for now we are investing in engines and heavy maintenance to return our existing fleet to service.”

Air Niugini has stated previously that due to its aging fleet, the airline often struggles to operate more than 55% of its aircraft (13 planes) on any given day. This is because there has been little investment in maintenance repair and overhaul over the past decade, and this retooling takes time and capital.

“We have recruited more qualified staff and we have been stocking high turnover inventory. We are seeing some improvement in productivity. But the age of the fleet continues to hamper operations. We will not place profits and schedule ahead of safety, and an unserviceable aircraft will not be operated regardless of the cost and inconvenience of disruption,” said the Acting CEO.

Mr. Seddon said “attracting more pilots and crew to operate additional aircraft has been challenging also. There is a worldwide shortage of pilots. They are being attracted to larger operators around the region, who are paying very high rates and one-off joining bonuses.” Air Niugini recently recommenced the pilot cadet training program and has received over 1,500 applications from school leavers to licensed pilots looking to develop their career.

Air Niugini relies on airport infrastructure to ensure a successful ex*****on of flights. This year the airline has had to modify its operations to accommodate failing runways in Mt. Hagen and Rabaul. The runway in Mt. Hagen is being repaired for the second time this year. This means that Air Niugini is unable to operate a conventional jet service to the city – which represents one of the busiest sectors in PNG. “We are forced to operate aircraft that can take 50 passengers, as opposed to 115. We must fly 3 aircraft instead of one. This means more flying time, more pilot hours. It is very costly and very inefficient. We will inevitably suffer a disruption and my staff are verbally abused as a result. This is not acceptable,” said Mr. Seddon. “Air Niugini is operating under very trying circumstances.

The fuel supply has been threatened on several occasions. The runway infrastructure at several airports is not to a standard that meets our current and future investment program, and the lack of landing lights are reducing the operating hours in the day.

There is a growing problem with wildlife at airports. Flight cancellations recently were exacerbated by bird strikes on aircraft. All of these issues are being addressed through a collaborative approach by relevant agencies, but the progress is slow.”

Air Niugini recently recommenced operations into Wapenamanda, Enga Province, and increased the number of jet services in to Goroka, EHP. Air Niugini executes more than 70 domestic and international flights every day. Presently, 47% of those flights are on time. And approximately 12% are cancelled. These indicators are very poor, and the Acting CEO is always the first to admit that. 65% of disruptions are technical in nature – the aircraft has an issue. But flights are also disrupted due to last light conditions, falling visibility, and weather. Despite these challenges, year to date September 2023, Air Niugini has safely transported just over 1.02million passengers.

Air Niugini is expecting additional fleet and the return to service of aircraft on heavy maintenance programs. Mr. Seddon clarified “In the lead up to the peak busy period, Air Niugini expects to have three widebody aircraft meeting international schedule requirements. Two larger narrow body aircraft performing domestic and international duties and a combination of fourteen regional jets and turboprops delivering domestic missions.”

“I hope that we can rely on the runways opening to full operations (and staying open) in November and that we see landing lights and other essential facilities.”

In November, Air Niugini is celebrating its 50th Anniversary of operations. This should be a happy memorable occasion. But the Acting CEO shares the concerns of the traveling public: that it is difficult to celebrate this momentous milestone, when service levels are still below an acceptable standard.”

Below are some of the clarity that needs to be set on record to avoid unnecessary closure of airports and ruin customer services when it comes to flight delays and poor airport management around PNG.

*****The relationships between ICAO, CASA PNG, NAC and Niusky Pacific.*****

ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority), airport management organization or NAC, and Air Traffic Service organization or Niusky Pacific are all critical entities in the field of civil aviation, but they have distinct roles and relationships:

1. ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization):

- ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for setting global standards and regulations for civil aviation.

- It establishes international standards and recommended practices for safety, security, efficiency, and environmental protection in aviation.

- ICAO provides a framework that member states, including PNG (where CASA is located), adhere to in regulating and operating civil aviation.

2. CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority):

- CASA is PNG's national aviation safety regulator.

- CASA is responsible for ensuring that civil aviation operations in PNG meet the safety and regulatory standards set by ICAO.

- CASA oversees the safety of airlines, aircraft, pilots, and aviation operations within PNG.

3. Airport Management Organization or the National Airport Corporation (NAC):

- NAC typically is responsible for managing and operating airports efficiently.

- They handle day-to-day airport operations, including terminal management, facilities maintenance, security, and customer service.

- These organizations must comply with national aviation regulations set by the local aviation authority (CASA PNG) and follow ICAO standards for safety and security.

4. Air Traffic Service Organizations such as the Niusky Pacific:

- Niusky Pacific is responsible for the safe and efficient management of air traffic within a specific airspace.

- They provide air traffic control services in PNG.

- Niusky Pacific is subject to national regulations set by the CASA PNG and follow ICAO standards to ensure safe and orderly air traffic operations.

In summary, ICAO sets global standards for civil aviation, including safety and operational guidelines. CASA PNG, as PNG's aviation safety regulator, enforces these standards within the country.

NAC and Niusky Pacific operate under the oversight of CASA PNG to ensure compliance with national and international regulations while managing airport and air traffic operations.
