The Honorable Peter Tsiamalili Jr, the regional Member for the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, proudly brought a forgotten piece of history to the MCG. The trophy, engraved with "Interstate Rugby League Series, Bougainville," hails from the first-ever Origin played in PNG.
This is a transcript from an interview with Rugby League historian, Mr. David Middleton.......
Services games were a big part of military life through both world wars, particularly in World War Two and in New Guinea there was a lot of downtime, particularly at the end of the war.
For instance, 20,000 troops were waiting for the ship to take them home to their ports on the Bougainville island. A lot of downtime for playing sporting games, cricket,
Australian rules, rugby league and we learned that on the rugby league field, there was this rivalry between the states. We knew that existed already, but we didn’t know about the actual tribalism and the fierceness of that tribalism. So someone came up with the idea, and it may well have been a bloke by the name of Warrant Officer Ron Connor who went to his superior officer and said we would
like to play an interstate game based on where our
players were born. Fortunately, his superior officer was a rugby league man from Charters Towers (QLD) Major H.A. Titley who agreed to the concept and the games went ahead.
There were two games played in September of 1945 on the island of Bougainville. Based on where players were born
New South Wales or Queensland.
So sport's greatest rivalry was born in Bougainville in Papua New Guinea, which has great significance for where the game of rugby league is now and the relationship with Papua New Guinea.
There were stories during World War Two that the fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, those brave Papua New Guineans who helped Australian soldiers march up the Kokoda Track, loved rugby league, and even later on they loved watching the games played by the the soldiers.
And so this game, a State of Origin game, played 35 yea

SP PNG HUNTERS COACH PAUL AITON STILL HAS FAITH IN HIS TEAM TO TURN THINGS AROUND.

BY Fidelis Sukina (Sport Kona) Journalist
It was a bitter end to what was a seemingly positive week for SP PNG Hunters Coach Paul Aiton, the fact that the Hunters were two from two with a bye and having a strong home advantage, the Coach had faith in his team which are placed 10th on the Hostplus Cup Ladder.
He had faith in his side would that they would topple the 2nd placed Redcliffe Dolphins in round six of the 2024 Hostplus Cup on Saturday in Port Moresby.
But all the positive vibes during the week came crashing down in the second half yesterday, with the Hunters 20 points to 12 lead chased down and overtaken by a more determined Redcliffe Dolphins outfit.
The Dolphins ran in five unanswered tries back to back in the second half, but to rub salt to the wounds, Dolphins halfback Joshua James took a practice field goal which felt unnecessary, but it went in anyway, hence the end result 39 points to 20.
At the post match Media Conference Standin Captain Jamie Mavoko sat as Coach Paul Aiton answered questions on the teams poor performance.
Aiton said he for the first time gave the team a strong no-nonsense post match talk to the 18 players after the match, you could see the disappointment on Aitons face whilst being seated.
When Sport Kona asked Aiton if there was going to be any changes to the side after the dismal performance, he said he will make the necessary changes, but he also mentioned that he had faith in the players that took the field, but again he was very disappointed with the finish.
"I believe in these 18 players I know they can win the top teams in the competition but its not happening," Aiton said.
"I think highly of these players, I know how good they are, I've see how they play and they are a good team, that's why its hard to see scores like that, seeing teams go against us like that, we were good in moments of the game
Zachariah Selu is making the best of his opportunity with the SP PNG Hunters, the Rabaul Panthers halfback, gained the attention of Hunters Coach Paul Aiton at the Zone Trials in Port Moresby and was given a train and trial preseason with the Hunters, after a gruelling preseason He made the final 30 for the teams 2024 Hotplus Cup Campaign, but is yet to make the starting line up.
He is currently also contracted to the Mendi Muruks in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup, where he is gaining much needed match fitness

Solo Wane is one of only a handful of players that have reached the milestone of 50 games as an SP PNG Hunter, the 25-year-old from Mendi Southern Highlands Province, made his debut under Coach Matthew Church in 2021.
Since debuting as Hunter number 96 he has been a regular in the starting line up cementing the wing position in the team, Solo when reaching the milestone of 50 games was happy he had come this far, the young winger also represented Papua New Guinea as a Kumul, he says he will continue to play the game and improve weekly and see where the game takes him next

Jack De Belin answered the call to help the Kumuls
BY Sport Kona
Jack de Belin, the Kumuls lock forward was a stand-out in defense against the Fiji Bati last weekend, despite the loss the 32-year-old showed passion and resilience.
Despite playing only 62 minutes he had a 93.55 % tackle efficiency making 29 tackles and missing only 1 tackle, he finished second compared to Rhys Martin who played 80 minutes and made 30 tackles, he topped the tackle count.
Jack said early on in the Pacific Championships Bowl Challenge that he was here to provide support and help build a strong team for the Kumuls going forward.
I even watched him singing the National Anthem of Papua New Guinea before the match he recited the words soundly not bad for a guy whose only connection to PNG is his grandmother being born here.
I salute you Jack De Belin your call to help the Kumuls was no doubt a blessing for these young men in the Kumuls team.

Let's forget about last week and look forward to a victory for the Kumuls.

Despite Fiji finishing atop the ladder in the Pacific Championship Bowl Challenge, they have opted to give back the home-side dressing room to the Kumuls, this is despite the rules stating that Fiji should be the home side this weekend for the final.
A humbling gesture indeed, the Fijians seem to be a humble people, something that seems to resonate among the team, the ora of humility, and they sure humbled the crowd and critiques at the Santos National Football Stadium and across PNG.
What can we say of last week's loss by the PNG Kumuls to the Fiji Bati? It was a dismal performance a breakdown in the Kumul's defense and a poorly executed game plan, many compounding factors, that can be conjured up by experts and commentators like myself but let's just stick to some of the obvious.
According to Kumuls Coach Justin Holbrook, he was obviously not happy with the team and described them as being reckless. against Fiji Bati.
"We were the ones that got reckless on the weekend we panicked a bit with the ball and gave them a much better opportunity with the ball we know what works and what doesn't work, we have to change our game plan," Holbrook said
The Kumuls looked off their game and not in the "zone" they were in when they thumped the Cook Islanders a fortnight ago, a week's rest in between may have caused the glitch, also the players from Super League were lacking match fitness.
This was evident with Edwin Ipape which Holbrook pointed out in an interview, coupled with the lack of opportunity by PNG to capitalize when in possession of the ball, the team was lacking basic direction in play.
"Edwin needed a run, to be honest, he didn't play for a month and he was on the other side of the world in different conditions, and Fiji didn't give us any real opportunity," Holbrook said.
That aside Fiji had improved in leaps and bounds after their match against the Cook Islands, t

Wake up call for PNG but Mad love for our Melanesian Brothers.
BY Sport Kona
The crowd turned out in droves at the Santos National Football Stadium on the 29th of October to see the Kumuls take on Fiji Bati
in the final group stage of the Pacific Championship Bowl Challenge.
Despite the hype and PNG's commendable record on home soil, it was the Fijians that ran riot through the PNG defense, and with quick dummy half runs and great control in the ruck area, PNG's weakness was exposed.
PNG had limited possession and what seemed to be a lack of cohesion from the team, simple errors were capitalized on by Fiji and they ran off to a significant lead.
the Fiji back line made up of star-studded NRL players proved a handful in attack and defense and Maika Sivo as a prolific finisher managed to muscle his way over for a try and also intercept a pass and dash 90 meters for a double.
Fiji has a strong following in PNG and the support is always neutral they are our Melanesian brothers and in sports our biggest rivals.
Justin Holbrook Kumuls Coach was apologetic to the fans across PNG and at the Stadium, there was a total of 14,300 plus that provided a rousing atmosphere true to the tag of PNG's mad love for rugby league.
PNG will have to use the second chance in this final match-up to redeem themselves on home soil with a lot of pride and passion at stake and bragging rights against our number one Melanesia Rivals Fiji.

JUDA RIMBU MAKING THE OPPORTUNITIES COUNT
BY Sport Kona
Juda Rimbu has proven, that he is a critical component in the Kumuls lineup and continues to persevere against criticism.
The 22-year-old started off as a five-eighth in the Digicel Cup in 2020 at 19, debuting for the Hela Wigmen. Rimbu caught the eye of former Kumul Charlie Wabo during the NCD Governors Cup in 2019, Wabo said he saw great potential in Judah, and Wabo allowed Rimbu to debut for the Wigmen and Judah did not disappoint.
Rimbu picked up the Rookie of the Year award in the 2020 Digicel Cup Season, he was ecstatic about it, he knew it was a step in the right direction as he had his first taste of success in his career.
Rimbu had withdrawn from secondary school that year and times were tough during the COVID-19 Pandemic, but Judah was determined to take the next step in his career and he did, after his breakout season with the Wigmen, the young lads dream of making the SP PNG Hunters came through the following year in 2021 and fast forward to 2023 he has made his Kumuls debut.
A utility player most often for the Hunters switching from the halves to the dummy half, he was most often always off the bench an impact player that is injected into the game to effect change and create scoring opportunities.
This was proven when his presence shifted the momentum of the match against Fiji last week Sunday, and he put in a grubber kick that led to a try by Epel Kapinias.
Judah says he is now working hard to break into the NRL or Super League, he has impressed the Kumuls Coach Justin Holbrook and many Papua New Guineans are starting to see Rimbu as a prolific player in the squad.
some of his teammates in the Kumuls the likes of Jack De Belin and Jacob Alick said Rimbu has been consistent with his performance and adds his own unique flare to the dummy half role.
Judah Rimbu and the Kumuls will be looking to better their performance this Sunday against the Fiji Bati and bring home the Pacific Championsh
PNG HUNTERS SNUB INSPIRES IPAPE IN BREAKOUT SEASON IN ENGLAND
BY Sport Kona
Edwin Ipape is set to burst on to the scene this weekend as one of the strike players when PNG Kumuls take on Melanesian rivals Fiji.
Ipape had served a one match suspension and missed out on PNG's win over the Cook Islands in the first match of the Pacific Championship Bowl Challenge.
Ipape who has been a prolific player in the Super League after a breakout season with Leigh Leopards in the Betfred Championships Ipape and his team were promoted to the Super League.
Ipape is undoubtedly one of the inform players in the Kumuls line up and his accolades are followed closely by media in the super league and the news always transcends to the shores of Papua New Guinea.
Ipape was dropped by the PNG Hunters in 2021 but was thrown a lifeline by former Kumul and Leigh Leopards Coach Adrian Lam.
Ipape has nothing but praise for Lam who he says has mentored him on and off the field.
Ipape is a hardworker and will surely be expected to bring his super league flair to the field on Sunday Against the Fiji Bati.
