Ministry of Provincial and Local Government Affairs Hosts 2nd Provincial Governors Conference

Lae, Papua New Guinea - November 7, 2023

The 2nd Provincial Governors Conference, hosted by the Ministry of Provincial and Local Government Affairs, commenced today at the Lae International Hotel under the theme "Continuing Dialogue to Empower Provinces for Improved Service Delivery, Economic Growth, and Self-Reliance."

Minister for Provincial & Local Government Affairs Hon. Soroi Eoe opened the conference with a warm welcome to all attendees, including Prime Minister Hon. James Marape and various government officials. Minister Eoe began by acknowledging the "Ahi traditional landowners," the custodians of the land upon which Lae City stands.

The conference's main objectives include updating the implementation status of the 25 Governors Resolutions passed earlier this year and fostering a dialogue on decentralization to empower provincial governments further. Minister Eoe emphasized the importance of strengthening provincial capacities to boost economic growth and self-reliance.

A significant development highlighted was the formation of a "Bipartisan Committee" to implement the resolutions. The committee includes prominent figures such as Hon. Luther Wenge, Hon. Grand Chief Sir Peter Ipatas, and others. Their mission involves implementing resolutions, reviewing policies, materials, and legislation on decentralization, and developing a National Decentralization Policy Framework.

Minister Eoe expressed his commitment to decentralizing powers and functions that belong to provincial and local level governments. He also called for unity among leaders at both national and provincial levels to remove bottlenecks and facilitate meaningful changes for the benefit of future generations.

Minister Eoe assured attendees of the government's commitment to this crucial task. The conference is expected to yield significant outcomes, with announcements expected in 2025 as the nation celebrates its 50th Independence Anniversary. The government's allocation of K6 million underscores the seriousness of this endeavor, with Minister Eoe urging departments and agencies to fulfill their responsibilities promptly.

The 2nd Provincial Governors Conference sets the stage for comprehensive discussions aimed at improving service delivery, driving economic growth, and fostering self-reliance in Papua New Guinea's provinces.

BUSINESS CONFIDENCE GROWS IN LAE

The business confidence level continue to soar high in Lae City as a result of reduction in crime rates in the city.

Crime reduction provides conducive environment for business houses to continue operate till night.

If general public can walk freely without being harmed and harassed during the recent Morobe Show, it goes to show the kind of change business houses wish to see.

Andersons Foodland Eriku now joins Foodmart (opens up to 9pm) and Big V (7:30pm). Haom at 8th Street and Kamkumung opens for 24 hours.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Raumai 18 & Papindo join the queue.

Operating late in the night means providing more incentives and employment opportunities both direct and indirect for locals. It also means there’s boom in the economic activities where cash flow is high.

All thanks to our hardworking and best police officers in PNG, the Lae Police.

With the massive support from Lae City Authority under the leadership of Hon. John Rosso, they’ve done an incredible job to keep the city safe. Forever grateful. They may not solve all crimes but SRU is the name everyone including criminals trust.

Only a mangi Lae knows how to fix Lae’s problem.

DON'T LIVE ON LAND NOT YOURS, ROSSO

Residents living along the buffer zone along Bumbu River have been urged to refrain from living on lands that are not belonging to them.
DPM and Lae MP John Rosso warned that residing on land that belonged to other people only leads to problems.
"When you build structures on land portions that did not belong to you, you will not know when or if an eviction will actually take place, Rosso said
He said his advice to people that are squatting along buffer zones of the Bumbu River was for them not to settle there.
"I appealed to those who owned the land along buffer zones or any other portions within the city to work closely with my office to see how best we can develop these lands,"Rosso said.
He also urged the landowners not to sell their lands.
"Instead of selling the lands for cheaper prices or just giving them for personal gains, come talk to Lae City Authority so that we can properly plan and develop this portion of the lands, " he said
